To get shop bought soup for vomitting bug instead of making homemade.

Sorry shamelessly putting in AIBU for traffic, 4 year old DC has a vomiting bug which started at 4am and I have a very delicate stomach, they've only had water so far.

Really need mumsnet recommendations of some shop bought soup (or anything) preferably thin no chunks. Thinking chicken broth? Sending DH out. (Or if I'm being unreasonable and should make homemade.. 🤭)

We have Lidl, Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury's nearby. Xx

I always always use heinz cream of tomato soup.

MojoMoon · 06/04/2025 12:50

Surely it depends on what your four year old is mostly likely to eat?

Likewise Heinz cream of tomato soup was a sick day go to when I was a child and remains so now. It's sweet and non-challenging.

Don't need to worry about whether it's organic or has UPFs in it. You are just getting something in your child. And they may vom it up anyway.

blubberyboo · 06/04/2025 12:51

Tinned cream of chicken broth or tomato is fine. Don't know why you'd think you have to stand making homemade when you're sick! It's food.

But if the vomiting only started at 4am they possibly don't need any food yet. The stomach needs to empty. Often the BRAT diet is best then to start with after about 12 hours or more. Or just plain old tea and toast

GrumpyNeighbourAgain · 06/04/2025 12:53

Heinz cream of tomato (With a little milk in it) and cream of chicken are perfect for this imo. No need for homemade. I hope that he/she feels better soon.

DoNoTakeNo · 06/04/2025 12:54

Canned soup is your answer, simple
tomato or chicken, whichever your
DC will have. They just need liquid &
calories at this stage.

Water with a bit of sugar is a good step on from plain water, then a nice sweet squash such as Vimto / Ribena. Diluted apple juice is what I’d use next.

(Also I’d be wary of cooking anything yourself at the moment, in case you’re inadvertently carrying the bug - not to alarm you obviously, but if it’s a food-borne pathogen there’s no point in risking it.)

Best wishes with it all 🌺

Always Heinz chicken soup in this house if anyone is ill.

flyinghen · 06/04/2025 12:58

NHS says if they are up to eating they can eat anything they like

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/04/2025 13:00

They need access to fluids, some calories and some sodium for any dehydration.

If you cooked some tiny bits of pasta (either tiny pasta or breaking up spaghetti) in chicken stock, a cube or half a cube in a full pan of water, that might be more agreeable than something with dairy in it - also cheaper/easier and less unpleasant on a return viewing.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 06/04/2025 13:00

Oh yes defo get the home made soup
going. Those tinned cans are ghastly my dear.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 06/04/2025 13:03

After you've had a sickness bug you're supposed to eat plain foods. Acid and dairy can irritate the stomach. Both of which are in tomato soup (plus it will stain really badly if they are sick again somewhere after). I'd stick to plain toast, rice, or even biscuits and crisps until you know they can keep something down

FairlyTired · 06/04/2025 13:04

If they're not tolerating keeping much down then 5 ml of squash in a calpol syringe every 5 minutes is good for keeping hydration up as its small enough to not trigger vomiting as easily as large amounts.

Mulledjuice · 06/04/2025 13:09

Plain Crackers
Plain boiled rice
Boiled Rice with soy sauce or in chicken stock
Add an egg through it if that stays down

Once through the first 24 hours
I'd get a waitrose chicken broth (whizz in blender or with stick blender to make it smooth)

Carrotsandgrapes · 06/04/2025 13:22

I'd avoid anything with dairy for a stomach bug (so no tomato or chicken soup). I'd go with something very plain, like water biscuits or crackers and maybe a clear broth or even a cup-a-soup type thing. And ice cubes to suck on.

Therealmetherealme · 06/04/2025 13:25

Whatever works for you and your family goes. My sick go-to as a child was often a chippy tea. Probably easiest for my mum and something she knew I’d eat. It wasn’t horrendously expensive 30 years ago.

stargirl1701 · 06/04/2025 13:26

We use Knorr Chicken Noodle packet soup.

SnakebitesandSambucas · 06/04/2025 13:27

1 egg scrambled egg tiny bit of salt and butter. Half piece of toast. But tbh normally with a sicky bug we followed the rule of no food until the next morning. Kept up with fluids ice pops, or flat coke etc

SnakebitesandSambucas · 06/04/2025 13:28

Nothing to scratchy on the throat if they are poorly either.

Blibbleflibble · 06/04/2025 13:55

Cream of tomato soup is the only thing they're willing to try so just going with that. I know it has dairy and will make a bloody mess if it's sicked back up but if they're willing to give it a crack thats all that matters. Xx I'll have the chicken and veg soup DH got xx

Thanks everyone xx

We usually use vegetable bullion and an egg stired into it!
But I agree with others, any can of soup is fine.

Katemax82 · 06/04/2025 14:05

Carrot and coriander fresh soup is nice

ButFirstCovfefe · 06/04/2025 14:08

This thread goes against everything I ever was taught about sickness bugs growing up.

We starve sickness bugs for as long as possible, then start with things like water biscuits, dry toast, rice and plain chicken if you’re fancy, before moving onto anything else.

I’ve never heard of giving soup for sickness until today.

ohtowinthelottery · 06/04/2025 12:56

Always Heinz chicken soup in this house if anyone is ill.

And to this day, I will never have cream chicken soup as that’s what we had when we were ill as children. As adults, all 3 of us hate it.

Try your child with a slice of toast or plain biscuit first. Makes less mess than soup when brought back up.

JustSaying10 · 06/04/2025 14:13

Spoonful of syrup from canned peaches. Recommended by a doc to me once.

Thelittleweasel · 06/04/2025 14:20

@Blibbleflibble

M&S tomato is the best. Warning - it does stain beautifully on fabric!

Heinz mushroom has followers with those who consider it wallpaper paste.

No, don't use milk. Sickness bugs induce temporary lactose-intolerance.

OP, I would just go with what your DC fancies. Soup isn't necessarily better than what their body is telling them to eat. And might be too acidic anyway.

Our go-tos after sickness are usually bananas, toast with dairy-free spread, crackers and bread sticks.
