To get shop bought soup for vomitting bug instead of making homemade.

Sorry shamelessly putting in AIBU for traffic, 4 year old DC has a vomiting bug which started at 4am and I have a very delicate stomach, they've only had water so far.

Really need mumsnet recommendations of some shop bought soup (or anything) preferably thin no chunks. Thinking chicken broth? Sending DH out. (Or if I'm being unreasonable and should make homemade.. 🤭)

We have Lidl, Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury's nearby. Xx

I would go with crackers or toast.

Blibbleflibble · 06/04/2025 14:48

Cream of tomato was refused when we sat down for lunch, just couldn't face it. DH got some lightly salted rice crackers too so put a few of them in a bowl on the sofa. Xx Thanks for all the tips everyone. They're usually a fantastic eater so I'm just going to let them choose when they're ready today and encourage fluids.

Ice lollies are great as they’re sugary and don’t always get vomited back up. Or dry foods. I can’t imagine wanting soup if I’m still vomiting.

Didn't get ice lollies but will check in the cupboard if I have a lolly kit (sure.I bought one years ago lol) and I'll see if I can make some orange squash ones.

This thread goes against everything I ever was taught about sickness bugs growing up.

We starve sickness bugs for as long as possible, then start with things like water biscuits, dry toast, rice and plain chicken if you’re fancy, before moving onto anything else.

I’ve never heard of giving soup for sickness until today.

I was thinking the same. Heinz cream of tomato is really acidic on the stomach. Cream of chicken really heavy.

Plain toast, a nibble on a digestive biscuit, crackers...

I hope she gets better soon!

BunfightBetty · 06/04/2025 16:00

Ice lollies first and foremost for rehydration that’s gradual, so less likely to hit the stomach and come straight back up. Then plain crackers/toast, plain rice etc. Then soup, if they can stomach it.

LucastaNoir · 06/04/2025 16:02

Gosh Heinz tomato soup is good if you’re a bit under the weather but would definitely make me vom if I had a sickness bug. It’s acid too which isn’t great.

Nibbling plain (poss salty) carbs are what work for us, ritz crackers, bit of dry toast or similar.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/04/2025 13:00

They need access to fluids, some calories and some sodium for any dehydration.

If you cooked some tiny bits of pasta (either tiny pasta or breaking up spaghetti) in chicken stock, a cube or half a cube in a full pan of water, that might be more agreeable than something with dairy in it - also cheaper/easier and less unpleasant on a return viewing.

Or just buy that packet chicken noodle soup 😂

that’s my go to. Thin chicken broth with small bits of noodle.

GrumpyNeighbourAgain · 06/04/2025 12:53

Heinz cream of tomato (With a little milk in it) and cream of chicken are perfect for this imo. No need for homemade. I hope that he/she feels better soon.

By all that is holy, why would you put milk in tomato soup?

Catwoman8 · 06/04/2025 16:09

Seriously if I had a sickness bug, I would not want to eat a creamy soup, I am not surprised it was refused. Soups are great for cold like illnesses, but not for sickness bugs..Orange sick, no thanks....

I would stick to plain things, toast, crackers, rich tea biscuits, banana and then try and ice lolly/ice pops to hydrate if they won't drink liquids.

Caspianberg · 06/04/2025 16:10

Those chicken broth soups. Get a plain one that’s less bits for fussy kids. Add mini soup or kids alphabet pasta to make appealing. It’s soft, kid friendly, ok vomited, no acidu taste or dairy if delicate stomach

I also freeze kids baby fruit pouches. Cut the tops off like apple purée ice pops

My mother used milk and extra water in everything she could as some sort of vendetta against seasonings.

If she couldn't add milk or extra water to anything, she'd soak it overnight in the stuff instead. And then make sure it was rinsed under the tap before slopping it on a plate afterwards.

Didn't know I actually liked food until I was old enough to buy things for myself.

mindutopia · 06/04/2025 16:23

Soup doesn’t seem like a great thing for a vomiting bug. Very splashy on the way back out and the tomato stains. 😬 I would go with toast or pasta and butter or a simple white carb of their choice. If soup is a must have, I always give mine miso, just from the packet with water from the kettle.

Hysterectomynext · 06/04/2025 15:40

And start with a chicken carcass please

She can’t, she’s only three weeks in with feeding her family of 10 with it.

If she’s a real Mumsnetter, she should have at least another 10 days before she can make stock with the carcass.

Ponderingwindow · 06/04/2025 16:33

Shop bought soup is fine.

i can think of nothing worse than acidic tomato soup while vomiting though. Why, just why would you do that to a person? Plus it makes it harder to see if they start vomiting blood. You don’t want them to get to the coffee grounds stage before you notice.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 06/04/2025 16:34

Hoydenish · 06/04/2025 12:47

I always always use heinz cream of tomato soup.

I used to, until last time when it made a repeat performance and the cleanup was horrendous!!

@Blibbleflibble I'm sorry to hear that you and DS aren't good, it's really horrible.

If I wasn't vegetarian, I'd probably go with just one of the fairly basic broths

But I don't think it matters too much, just whatever you feel you can tolerate.

And this absolutely nothing wrong with shop bought

I hope you are all much better very soon

TheLurpackYears · 06/04/2025 16:38

I've only ever had one d&v bug that warranted medical advice. It was a definite no to chicken (something to do with it's natural bacteria...) and a definite no to dairy. A definite yes to dry and salty, so salted nuts or crackers. And lots of fluids.
But at 4 it's more likely to be whatever will keep their fluids up- icelollies? And something with calories in it. It could take longer than you think for full appetite to return.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 06/04/2025 16:38

@Blibbleflibble

also try offering the soup later in a mug. It's much easier to deal with that way.

Zeitumschaltung · 06/04/2025 16:42

We always start with a bowl of plain rice.

TheLadyIsAVamp · 06/04/2025 16:45

We always keep in a couple of packets of the Knorr chicken noodle soup for occasions like this. I love a creamy soup but not when I'm feeling sick.

MrsClatterbuck · 06/04/2025 17:01

My dm sometimes gave me a spoonful of brandy along with some sugar!!!
Baxters Cream of Tomato is my go to when unwell and not much appetite

Ophy83 · 06/04/2025 17:12

Banana, rice, apple puree, toast. If that goes ok, natural yoghurt tomorrow

PinotDragon86 · 06/04/2025 19:06

Dairy isn't good for vomiting. Let your child eat what they feel like, toast, crackers and the like. Doesn't have to be soup, just make sure they aren't getting dehydrated

TourangaLeila · 06/04/2025 19:11

Jacobs crackers
Plain white toast
Electrolyte water
Watered down lucozade

For at least 24 hours after the last vom.

Good luck cleaning up the tomato stained sick patches 🤮
