To stop doing the washing every day and do it at the end of the week?

We seem to find ourselves constantly at the washing machine or dryer 😂 every day! We have two kids, two adults in the house. Would I be mad to say you know what? Throw all the washing into the wash basket and we’ll just have a laundry day once a week?!

How often is everyone else putting on a load of washing for a family for 4?

I think it's rich people taking private jets everywhere, not Sarah washing her duvet cover every week.

Well people doing washing every single day and using a tumble dryer a lot of the time are hardly helping are they?

I've no idea how many people are doing that, how frequently, or what their carbon footprint is like. I suppose that would be an interesting topic for another thread.

We’re 2 adults and 3 children. DH and I exercise most days and DD1 does lots of sports so there’s always lots of clothes to wash. We wash 5 to 6 days a week and it’s been the best personally. There are 2 to 3 days of washing darks, one day for white, another for mixed lights, a day for bedding and towels etc. only the whites need ironing so that’s done on a Saturday.
It takes less than 30 mins of each day. I prefer that to having to do all the washing in a day because that’ll me I’ll have to use the tumble dryer which we rarely use because the dehumidifier dries the clothes.
We have 2 laundry baskets so there’s always a full load when it’s time to wash each type.

I have read enough threads on here to know that a hell of a lot of people wash every day, some even more than one load a day, and use a tumble dryer even in the summer.

I can never believe how many people wash clothes after 1 wear and towels after 1 use.

I do most of mine at the weekend. Can easily get 2 loads out to dry at once.

currently have all the bedding out plus another load. White load in the machine and by the time that is done the earlier load will be dry

washing at the weekend suits me best as away from the house for 12+ hours on week days and can't be faffed hanging washing out at 6am. Especially as often it would be dry but it then rains later on in the day before I'm home, so washing is then wet.

Yes fair enough if you're out of the house all day in the week. I can also get two loads on the line at once. It just sounded like that person did at least five loads at the weekend all in the drier.

FeatherDawn · 06/04/2025 15:35

I do it once a week
Wash on a Thursday night, hang out , bring in Friday afternoon and tumble for 5 minutes.
I combine this with my shopping, cleaning and baking day so I'm in and out of the kitchen anyway.
Can't abide piles of laundry hanging up all the time.
When my dc were little I had 5 sets of uniform so if it got filthy I didn't need to wash in the week.
Saturday and Sunday freeeee!( I'm off Fridays )

Goldyyup · 06/04/2025 15:36

I find it easier to do it everyday. It stresses me out looking at the piles building up. The weather has been so good lately that I can get it done really quickly. I also work from home most days so keep on top of it throughout the week.

0ohLarLar · 06/04/2025 15:36

I do also think people have got very weird with washing everything after only one use. It’s so wasteful and unnecessary.

This. I know so many people routinely putting kids in a fresh set of uniform every single day when its got no stains and could easily have a second wear. I also know a lot of people who are constantly washing bedlinen and towels. Better to wash bedlinen every couple of weeks and get back in the habit of airing beds properly each day and drying towels properly to be used again.

Ok. Engage them in this eco conversation then. It certainly doesn't apply to me.

I do 1-3 loads a day. Couldn’t be bothered saving it all up plus sheets, towels, pet bedding etc on one day! That would be mad.

That's a question, not a criticism, @LoudPlumDog !

I’m not washing towels and bedding excessively but do need to run the washing machine close to daily. I use the dryer frequently in the winter but never in the summer. Purposely have a heat pump model to minimize my carbon footprint, aswell as having invested 10s of thousands in retrofitting my house to be more sustainable so I don’t feel like it’s that bad. I see more people using heated airers and dehumidifiers here, that’s a false economy because the damp that comes from drying washing in a house slowly over days will eventually create bigger problems

The whole point of a dehumidifier is to remove the moisture from the air and prevent damp. They are very effective & much more energy efficient than using a tumble drier.

Yes, they swim in the river every day, the retriever sheds a lot, the cat is a Maine Coon who sheds a lot ….

Yes but a dehumidifier won’t do that more efficiently than a heat pump dryer, and some of the condensation from the clothes will inevitably escape if doors are opened etc. Plus just the time, the dryer is quicker. I don’t want to wait 24 hrs + for my washing to be (maybe) dry.

Ok, I'm looking after my sister's dog for a few weeks. How often should I wash the bedding? Golden retriever.

I’m not sleeping on 2 week old crusty semen and vaginal fluids

BumbleBeegu · 06/04/2025 16:43

You’d simply have too much to get done if you saved it all until the weekend OP. There would be no time for anything else! I live on my own now so don’t have much, but even I do two loads a week (one mid week and one at the weekend). When I had children (and a husband) at home I’d have to keep on top of it all by doing a daily load.

Just try to envision getting 7 or 8 loads washed, dried, ironed and away on a weekend!! 😱

Am I the only person who doesn't know what Emperor bedding is? I checked today, I can get my king size winter weight duvet in my washing machine.

So you have:
single 90cm wide
double 135cm wide (which really is a nonsense size. It’s a great bed if you think of it as a large single. But no way for 2 people
King 150cm
Super King 180cm
Emperor 200 or 220cm
various other bespoke sizes.

if you imagine a duvet cover as two massive sheets it really takes up a heck of a lot more machine space each size up you go

5 of us and we do twice a week. Monday/tuesday, then Thursday/fri. Try to avoid doing it all at the weekend!
