To stop doing the washing every day and do it at the end of the week?

We seem to find ourselves constantly at the washing machine or dryer 😂 every day! We have two kids, two adults in the house. Would I be mad to say you know what? Throw all the washing into the wash basket and we’ll just have a laundry day once a week?!

How often is everyone else putting on a load of washing for a family for 4?

I tried this for 2 adults one child and it didn't work, especially in summer. Maybe if we had a bigger house with a spacious utility - but we have space for one airer and a washer-dryer. I do about 4 loads a week. Ours, DS, DS's football/rugby/swimming kits and towels. Then added bedding every other week.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 06/04/2025 08:14

It’s overwhelming doing it all at once. I like little and often. I’ve bought some gorgeous baskets to sort it into to help me enjoy it more.

EdgyMentor · 06/04/2025 08:15

We do laundry everyday. 2 adults, 3 adult sized sweaty teens. One is autistic and who changes clothes several times a day.

It drives me mad. Doing it all in one day makes it worse I think. But nothing stopping you trying to see if you prefer it! If you want a much easier life though, try and get the kids doing their own laundry once a week when they have a full load

hockityponktas · 06/04/2025 08:15

I try and do a load as soon as I have enough! I don’t have a drier and find it annoying to get everything dry if I save it for a specific day.

I'm a once a week person and I much prefer it that way. It means we're doing full loads (our machine tells us if we're overloading it, and that basically never happens, you can get a lot in), it means the kids don't stick everything they wear straight in the wash, even if it's just a hoodie they've put on for two hours after school, and it means all the "putting away" is done in one go, so we don't have piles of clean clothes in the kids rooms.
I don't feel overwhelmed by the washing baskets filling up, because I just see that as normal now.
If you think it would make your life simpler, go for it. There's no right or wrong way to do laundry, as long as you're all wearing clean pants every day!

We are also a family of 2 adults, 2 kids. I wash every day. It dries outside quickly in this weather. Each morning I put away the day before wash. If I did it all in one day, I’d have no way of drying it all. Just get organised

People who do daily washes - do you do all mixed loads? I think that's what I'd do but DH is in charge of housework and he is an all at the weekend in 4 to 5 specific loads: dark/lights/coloureds/sportswear/woollens/my decent dresses and delicates. I find it slightly annoying.

I don't quite wash every day but no - whites /lights/darks/delicates. So some stuff hangs around a few days while the load builds up.

I don't like grey whites.

MotorwayDiva · 06/04/2025 08:18

I tried that recently, missed a day of washing at weekend and been catching up this weekend. Never again!

MightyGoldBear · 06/04/2025 08:19

Family of 6. We do the washing on a Sunday. We re wear or have multiples so everything needs washing less. Don't actually find it to be a mammoth task. Tumble dryer unless sunny/dry outside and don't iron.

EndorsingPRActice · 06/04/2025 08:19

I do it throughout the week and weekend. Usually towels on Monday and bedding Wednesday (both days I wfh) and other washes as and when I get a full load. Ironing usually Sunday mornings. wfh 2 days a week has made it really easy to do.

ShriekingTrespasser · 06/04/2025 08:21

I would hate to have to dedicate a big chunk of the weekend to washing. I do a couple of loads during the week and a couple on the weekends.

Coali · 06/04/2025 08:21

We do it the other way around. All the washing during the week and then weekends are free to go out and have fun.

Asalmonswimmingupstream · 06/04/2025 08:21

Family of four, at least one wash a day!
Kids uniforms and my clothes all similar colours so all go in together every night, husbands work clothes in one load on a Friday night, bedding and towels on the weekend.
Any warm sunny day I will do the sofa cushions/ winter coats to store away, blankets etc on rotation.
Hang as much as possible outside and have a heated airer inside.

Highlights12 · 06/04/2025 08:22

If the weather is good in the week surely it’s better to do it then than save it to the weekend when it could be raining. Washing dried outside is so much better

We do it the other way around. All the washing during the week and then weekends are free to go out and have fun.

So do we now I think of it. There's enough time in the evenings to put it on while cooking dinner etc in our house.

Galliano · 06/04/2025 08:24

I wash for 4 adults and almost exclusively at weekends
Things that help me are having a washing machine that can take a 10kg load and has a button that reduces the eco cotton 40 degree wash from 3 to 1 hr approx
Lots of outdoor drying space including undercover outdoor space
Heat pump tumble dryer

It’s very doable with all of the above available

JollyLilacBee · 06/04/2025 08:25

People do their own washing here, no way would I be doing everyone’s washing, it’s no wonder you feel overwhelmed. I do mine 2 x per week, with the second time being 2 loads as I’ll be washing bedding/towels. Dd is a ‘let it build up until she has no clothes left’ washer, so it varies for her. Ds depends on what sport he has on that week, but he washes his uniform on a Friday evening so that it’s ready for school on Monday, then another sports kit wash on Sunday evening after his weekend sports. He usually needs to do another one at some point during the week.

daffodilandtulip · 06/04/2025 08:25

I do the main load each Friday so everything is done for the weekend, then I do a white wash when there's enough, plus towels and bedding when needed.

kkneat · 06/04/2025 08:25

I do washing for 2 adults and a teen (other older children do their own). I do 2 to 3 loads (9kg machine) at weekend. I don’t wash towels every use and wear tops and jeans 2 to 3 times before I wash them. I boil wash towels on highest temperature every 4 weeks (I store them up). Rarely use the dryer. For some reason I had washing clothes during the week think it’s a throw back from doing school uniforms at weekend.

Nannyfannybanny · 06/04/2025 08:27

2 pensioners washing machine daily!! 2 pensioners here, always a full load, undies changed daily, bedding, towels weekly.i don't change jeans etc after one wash. 2 dogs , throws, sofa covers, bedding. Weekly in summer, when I can dry it outside. I've gone over to a cover less duvet... complete misnomer, soft polyester sheets and pillowcases for winter they're all cold wash and don't tumble dry. I had 4 DKs,used toweling nappies and, never did a daily wash.. yes,I am fussy, I don't mix colours and whites and I iron!

JustMyView13 · 06/04/2025 08:27

I think you’ll dread the weekend, and you’ll struggle to get it all dry. Have you got a heated airer? Game changer. You can dry things flat and get away without ironing some things.
If you put the washing on time delay, it’s done by the time you wake up & you can have it on the airer in the day.

stayathomer · 06/04/2025 08:28

I think it depends on the amount of clothes you have and also how mucky the kids get- I have one son who seems to absorb his food through his clothes and another that has grass or muck stains daily! If not I’d say you’d be fine

Lovegame · 06/04/2025 08:30

2 adults and 2 kids and wash daily. 2 loads of bedding, 1 towels and then clothes in between plus swimming stuff. Unless you’re always in the house at the weekend I imagine it’s easier to do one a day durring the week.

@Newusername3kidss a dehumifier would make your life easier.
