Shouting, cheering and clapping at Minecraft movie

I'm actually on the fence about how I feel so rather than aibu I guess I'm just wondering what others think/thought.

Took DS (6) to the Minecraft movie tonight - this isn't a question about taste or quality of the film! Obviously Minecraft is enjoyed by a wide range of ages, and in particular there were large groups of teenage boys there, I'd say between 13 and 17 at a guess. They were generally polite in any contact (Ie; saying excuse me to get past etc) but when the film started, every time there were particular references there would be loud cheering, shouting, clapping and repeating the line - to the point of not being able to hear the film. I had briefly seen reference to this online and a friend who took their child to a different cinema also experienced it previously. I guess it probably happened about 15 times throughout the movie.

Now on the one hand, it was a bit of fun, they've paid their money too and it was an experience - I guess similar in vein to Rocky Horror audience.

On the other, there were lots of children around my D's age and some (D's included) were quite startled, upset and didn't understand why people were doing this - some left early, some were tearful and for D's it definitely spoilt his evening a bit.

I don't really know what a solution would be to make it so both groups enjoy it, but I think ultimately I'm a bit annoyed. Have others experienced this and what did you think? (For the poll purposes - iabu would be it's fine people are just having fun, ianbu would be that it's a bit annoying and antisocial

You will always get a few that try and spoil things for others what ever the event

but these shared experiences are to be encouraged how many of us have worried about our children spending too much time on their screens

Itsabeautifulthing · 04/04/2025 23:45

Happened at the showing we went to as well. Only around 3 times through the movie and again at the after credits extra scene. I clapped too 🤣 only because my two sons were clapping, I had no idea what we were all clapping for tbh but everyone was really happy and it was infectious. Now wondering if I looked like a dick 🤣

mydogfarts · 04/04/2025 23:45

DSS (14) said it was something to do with memes.

I think it's quite sweet as half the school went today (they had an inset day). But mine would have hated it when they were little.

@HRTQueen do you not see the irony that they are following this behaviour from watching screens ie social media

HRTQueen · 04/04/2025 23:50

I’ve just remembered when I went for a school (all girls school) trip to see Back to the Future

when Michael J Fox appeared we all screamed 😆 I didn’t even get the appeal but I joined in

our teachers gave up telling us to be quite after a while

Was sent videos of my grandsons laughing and cheering tonight during the film 8 and 10. They got the in jokes because they play Minecraft. I heard lots of others cheering and laughing.

My grand daughters dressed in pink for Barbie.

I remember a lot of older women dressed as 70s girls singing along to the songs in Mama Mia even dancing at the end.

All three events were joyful IMO

People shouldn't be filming anything during a cinema screening. Other audience members using screens during a film has ruined nearly every film I've seen lately. It's getting to the point where I'll probably stop going to the cinema altogether.

Needmorelego · 04/04/2025 23:53

@crumblingschools oh I wasn't aware of that. I just knew about wearing suits.
That does sound disruptive but the experience I had watching Minecraft was very different.
It felt like it was meant to be part of it.
When Jack Blacks character was clearly about to say an iconic line - you knew it was coming and you had been waiting for it - so it got a cheer.

I was going to add a comment but couldn’t think of anything witty …

Who’d be a teenage boy, eh?

The whole country including the prime minister carried away about toxic masculinity and the terrible things boys will do.

Like get together with pals on the last day of term to see a movie that means something to them and dare to clap and cheer at the funny quotes and memes. Yet when young children disrupt family movies that’s okay because they’re kids movies 🤷‍♀️

No excuse for leaving their mess behind but apart from that I am delighted that these lads have something very wholesome to do this Friday night.

I agree with this too.

Tbrh · 05/04/2025 00:00

It actually sounds like alot of fun, but maybe they should have special sessions for it. I can understand if it's not for everyone, although tearful seems an overreaction!

May09Bump · 05/04/2025 00:01

I think you pick your showing with these kind of films - it looks cheesy from the trailer, so bad it could be a good cult classic :) And I would have predicted some commentary from the viewers giving its subject. It was last day of term too.

I don't mind the interaction, a lot of these teenagers spend a lot of time gaming and to be socialising in the real world, I'm happy to see.

My teenager advised not to take my 9 year old as some scenes not appropriate - killing, etc. So I will watch it first. I take my younger children to early showings as most teenagers are either in bed or at sports :)

They are enjoying an experience together. Having fun at a film aimed at them.
Remembering a loved streamer who died too young.
Laughing and clapping at shared jokes and understanding.
Poor boys. They just can't win.

My 14 yo is there with his friends tonight. First time on their own at a movie!

I LOVE that they put a tribute to Technoblade in the movie.

I still get teary eyed thinking about him. My
son grew up watching Techno. He was a phenomenal human being.

I also love that other streamers were in it.

We watched interviews at the movie premiere and it was so cool to watch these youtubers get to interview Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge and others.

This movie imo is really for the players, and I hope they have fun and enjoy it.

I’m Canadian personally love it when people cheer and clap in movies. It makes it feel more fun and communal.

Tbrh · 05/04/2025 00:02

Needmorelego · 04/04/2025 23:38

I think for some films in recent years the cinema experience has changed.
It's not about watching a film silently - it's about having a shared communal experience. Having characters/stories you know and love, catch phrases that everyone can recite, dressing up in character etc.
Not for all types of films obviously but for a daft film like Minecraft (or ones like Minions) it makes it quite a fun experience.

Also wasn't this how people used to watch movies initially? Like in the 40s and 50s, it was an interactive experience with lots of yelling and cheering from what I have seen. Probably depends on the movie of course.

Needmorelego · 05/04/2025 00:04

@Tbrh I have a feeling Cowboy films were probably very interactive 😂

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 05/04/2025 00:08

Agreed! People used to be very interactive at movies.

I love that the players who helped make the game what it is today are having a blast watching it.

Barbie was similar, and Mama Mia too. So much fun!!!

Especially John Wayne 😁

Agree with this.
Ds (14) and his friends went tonight. First time on their own to the cinema all a good bunch of boys. Ds was talking about the cheering and clapping and said that was better than the movie itself.

The film must have been shit, then.

Still, some people might have wanted to watch it. I'd probably find me yelling "you're an arsehole" repeatedly into the face of someone who talked in the cinema more entertaining than some films, but don't you think it might spoil them for others?

Needmorelego · 05/04/2025 00:12

@AthWat the film was silly.
It was over the top in its silliness.
That's kinda the point of it. It wasn't amazing. It wasn't a masterpiece of drama. It was a daft bit of fun.

It’s a movie for teens.

Would you be upset at people during Rocky Horror?

Heaven forbid teenagers have a fun time doing something aimed at them.

Never expected anything else from Jack Black. Barbie was silly fun too. The world needs more silliness. I suspect it will be a commercial success but won't win awards. Filmed in NZ I bet the scenery was fabulous though

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 05/04/2025 00:17

I wouldn’t generally take mine to the cinema in the evening, so hoping it’s not such an issue when we go.

It is a bit inconsiderate but maybe they felt the timing was ok as it was evening? Would be annoying though

Needmorelego · 05/04/2025 00:17

@justasking111 I didn't think the scenery looked totally American and when I saw in the credits it was filmed in New Zealand it made sense.

Needmorelego · 05/04/2025 00:19

@justasking111 I think Jason Momoa should win an award for wearing that superb pink jacket.
