Shouting, cheering and clapping at Minecraft movie

I'm actually on the fence about how I feel so rather than aibu I guess I'm just wondering what others think/thought.

Took DS (6) to the Minecraft movie tonight - this isn't a question about taste or quality of the film! Obviously Minecraft is enjoyed by a wide range of ages, and in particular there were large groups of teenage boys there, I'd say between 13 and 17 at a guess. They were generally polite in any contact (Ie; saying excuse me to get past etc) but when the film started, every time there were particular references there would be loud cheering, shouting, clapping and repeating the line - to the point of not being able to hear the film. I had briefly seen reference to this online and a friend who took their child to a different cinema also experienced it previously. I guess it probably happened about 15 times throughout the movie.

Now on the one hand, it was a bit of fun, they've paid their money too and it was an experience - I guess similar in vein to Rocky Horror audience.

On the other, there were lots of children around my D's age and some (D's included) were quite startled, upset and didn't understand why people were doing this - some left early, some were tearful and for D's it definitely spoilt his evening a bit.

I don't really know what a solution would be to make it so both groups enjoy it, but I think ultimately I'm a bit annoyed. Have others experienced this and what did you think? (For the poll purposes - iabu would be it's fine people are just having fun, ianbu would be that it's a bit annoying and antisocial

The more I read this thread, the more I love the thought of these kids all having such a fun time @justasking111agree the world needs more silliness 😄 it's made me realise how uptight I've become!

Edited

Did you think of all the other kids, like the OP's kid, who weren't having a good time because of it? How did they factor in to your emotions?

Curious about this myself!

For everyone claiming it was a wonderful shared experience - did everyone in the audience think so? Or were a noisy minority just cheerfully fucking the experience up for everyone else?

We went, group of kids on the back row maybe 12 /13 no clapping but all in sync shouted "chicken jockey" not a peep out of them otherwise and it was actually quite funny and lovely to see them enjoying it and being kids. All cleaned their mess up too and so polite. What annoyed me more where parents and young kids who didn't understand anything in the film the kids were restless and lost interest they were the ones talking, up and down, wrappers rustling. The teenagers were all fully engrossed in the movie. No harm done.

DS and his friend are going today, first time on his own to the cinema. They will love any shared community references and totally get into it and if others are clapping and cheering, they will definitely do this too. I don’t think I will pre-emptively police this, but I will be telling them to make sure and pick up their rubbish but I would expect them to do that anyway.

I actually was tearing up reading this thread. Minecraft and playing online with his friends got DS through lockdown and his sister and I also played with him at times on a split screen. Like others say, it’s part of their childhood. Some of the negative comments about young people’s enjoyment of a film and community seem way over the top.

God, this sounds massively irritating.

GrandHighPoohbah · 05/04/2025 07:57

Cinemas are really struggling at the moment. I think they need to branch out into more "live theatre" type screenings like this film lends itself to in order to remain relevant to younger audiences.

My DS went yesterday with his friends and the show was exactly as described by the OP. The whole room joined in and everyone loved it. I think we need to alter our expectations that all films are watched in silence. This one is obviously going to be loud and fun, and you should really stay away if you're not going to enter into the spirit of it.

princesspeppax · 05/04/2025 08:01

Is this a trend of some sort or I wonder if you are local to me OP, have seen a few people on our towns local page saying the same thing. Shocking behaviour and the cinema not dealing with it well!

CautiousLurker01 · 05/04/2025 08:05

My teens saw it last night too - aged 17-19 in a group of 12 in total. They’re lively but also stated that it was so incredibly rowdy that the cinema paused the film and the manager came to address the audience after removing some of the audience. My kids claim they and their group were not the rowdy ones (there were at least 4 diagnosed autistic YPs in their group so I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt).

However, my kids were stunned by the fact at the 8pm showing, though, on a Friday night that there were a small number of younger children/families and whilst they too were hacked off by the rowdiness, felt that perhaps families with young children might have been more circumspect about attending that particular showing.

I can kind of see it from both sides really.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll be mindful of the timings when booking our tickets.

DiscoBeat · 05/04/2025 08:10

My 17 year old is going to go with his friends. He told me about all the cheering being a thing and he said there's just one reference he's planning to stand up and briefly clap but he doesn't want to spoil it for the younger ones so he'll leave it at that. Obviously not standing up at all would be better but he's excited and I can still see the little kid that used to love the game not so long ago.

Yes, my DS and his friends are going to the latest showing. Maybe take them early when the teenagers are still in bed!

I had to Google the homage Jack made to Technoblade before I understood. Very sad.

IsItOnlyWednesday · 05/04/2025 08:17

I think it sounds sweet, like they’re enjoying the film and if they’re doing that they’re off their computers, not being radicalized by Andrew Tate or committing knife crime.

I’m being driver next week so my sons can take my grandkids. I was going to sleep through it (like I do through most films I go to) but I might try and stay awake now.

Leesc · 05/04/2025 08:23

I took my 9 year old and her friend last night, I was surprised by the amount of crowd participation, constant clapping, cheering when certain characters appeared or something mundane happened, reciting the dialogue over the film and people jumping up and shouting 'STEVE!' at random parts but tbh it made a poor film a highly enjoyable experience.

It was all good natured and just a lot of kids (and young adults) enjoying something that has been a major part of their life.

Yes the shouting masked some of the film and I missed a few seconds here and there of the dialogue but it didn't take anything away from the film and it's certainly not like you're missing anything life changing being said!
