I thought I’d ran out of coffee and I can’t nip out now the children are in bed.
I’ve just come across some ground coffee in a packet at the back of the cupboard but it’s out of date by just over 18 months. Would you?

It won’t harm you, if that’s what’s worrying you. It just might not taste as good as it did when it was fresh.

JohnofWessex · 04/04/2025 20:46

It shouldn't do you any harm unless its gone mouldy but it might not be as nice as when it was in date

Try it

Better still get some freshly roasted beans and grind them yourself

Fancycheese · 04/04/2025 20:46

I wouldn’t have thought there would be any danger or risk in drinking it. The grounds will just likely be stale and so possibly not very tasty.

Moonmelodies · 04/04/2025 20:47

You could try pouring boiling water on it in case there are any germs.

She can't leave the kids, they're in bed.

Era · 04/04/2025 20:47

I’m still drinking my Covid coffee from 2020 (I might have over ordered since we don’t drink much coffee). It’s completely fine

RhododendronFlowers · 04/04/2025 20:48

Have a look, they're probably ok. Just lost some taste. Were they vacuum sealed?

coffeequerie · 04/04/2025 20:48

It looks and smells alright.

OP posts:
RhododendronFlowers · 04/04/2025 20:49

It'll be ok then.

It’s been opened and resealed with a metal twist.

Yes that’s how I normally have it.

I won’t but I’m a cautious type

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 04/04/2025 20:55

It wouldn’t even occur to me to check the date on coffee. I’m sure it will be fine.

Probably ok.
Come back and let us know you've survived!

Xmasbaby11 · 04/04/2025 21:13

I’m sure it’s fine just not as tasty as it should be. I’d definitely drink it!

SaladSandwichesForTea · 04/04/2025 21:15

I'd definitely drink it.

It's been sealed.
Its not an iffy product like meat or dairy.
You're putting boiled water in it.
It's a bbe not use by date.

I'd probably drink it 10 years out of date.
As long as it didn't smell off.

So pop out and leave the children not just to buy coffee beans but a grinder as well? Some posters do have the daftest suggestions 😁

It wouldn't even occur to me that it had a date in the first place 😁what could go off with it?

Quick, quick! Are you ok, OP?! 🙏

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 05/04/2025 08:51

There's a coffee shop in Tokyo that brews 20 year old coffee beans, and a sock as a filter, so I think you'll be fine. Maybe it'll taste even better?

I dont think that poster meant right now did they?

Some posters do have the daftest understanding

The OP was asking about making a cup of coffee at the time she posted hence, I assume, reference to the sleeping children

Why would anyone ask about coffee they were planning on drinking at a later date when soing shopping was an option?

WhereIsMyJumper · 05/04/2025 09:12

This is entirely unreasonable but only because I am a massive coffee snob who grinds freshly roasted beans and I think it wouldn’t taste very good 😂

God this is hard work

The poster who referenced getting some beans, is not likely to have meant right now. The poster is likely to have meant overall, in the long run, keep roasted beans in the house and then they'll be freshly ground at the time you want them rather than relying on bags in the cupboard.

Not for the OP to run out there and then to get some beans during this particular dilemma

I need a coffee now and I dont even drink the stuff
