If you're overweight, how much do you spend on food?

I suppose my AIBU is 'To think I can't afford to put on weight'... but I MUST be! I'm not on the breadline. But eating any more just looks SO expensive!

This is my question:

  1. I really want to put on weight
  2. Every time I go to buy excess food (thinking calorie surplus) I think of my bank account
  3. But when I go food shopping, I see soooo many overweight people. Some of whom MUST have less disposable income than me
  4. How have they got to that weight!?
  5. My jazzy banking app tells me I spend £700/mth on food (+3kids, no other adult).
  6. That's 350 on food shop and 350 on eating out (we live in a very cafe-y area, but it's like fancy quiche deli salad places. Ain't nobody getting fat on this stuff)
  7. Apparently UPF is great for putting on weight but I really don't like the taste and texture of processed food (which is apparently fab for making anybody overweight)
I like homemade, pure food. Like, if I want a sausage roll, I'll make sausage rolls. I don't like the taste of pre-made or cold food. I only really like hot and fresh, made on site etc.
  1. Food is so expensive! I don't buy snacks or crap for the house because it's just.. more money. But discussing snacking with school mums, I'm starting to think maybe I don't keep enough snacks in.
I only eat 3 meals, I can't dream what would happen to that £700 spend if I started snacking too!

If you are overweight: HOW!? Do you spend £700+ on food/mth?

I just want to understand the balance I need to make between my spend and my weight. Is my food spend unusually low? Do I need to start splashing out on the calories?

I get that being overweight for many isn't desirable. But being underweight is no treat either.

OP you make no sense. You spend as you have told us umpteen times 700 POUNDS ON FOOD but are skinny. Can you not figure out that it’s your body. Not the money. Other people will spend £300 o. Food and be obese because their bodies get fat easily.
why do people accept that some people struggle to put on weight even when eating shit tonnes but struggle to believe others get fat without eating shit tonnes.

Hubblebubble · 04/04/2025 20:42

@Shmee1988 If she was posting in good faith then she should've asked people at a healthy weight what they eat to maintain that or people who have previously underweight people who have reached a healthy weight what changes they made. Instead she made some very rude and judgemental assumptions about overweight (not obese) people's financial and nutritional choices. So people have been taking the piss.

Well yeah, I did. Because I didn't want to know how people gained weight.

I wanted to know purely about the $$$

Because my concern is that if I need to eat more, I need to buy more. And that is going to be EXPENSIVE.

Hence, how much, please, do those already overweight spend on food.

Anyway I'm going to shut up now because I'm proper winding a lot of people up. Thank you for helpful comments. And heck, even those not.

I was recently denied for my 3rd mortgage so I can go buy more food to feed my fat ass. It's a struggle, now I'll have to start stealing candy from babies I suppose.

Mylegishangingoff · 04/04/2025 20:49

Surely the obvious answer would be to stop eating out so much and spend some of that money on calorific food at home? Butter, cream, nuts, oily fish etc. Make high calorie protein smoothies you can find loads of recipes online.

Thelnebriati · 04/04/2025 20:53

I used to be super skinny but then I went through menopause and I'm enormous. I eat less than I used to but it costs more because the price of everything has gone up. Its all very confusing.

I sell my kids on Vinted and buy rőllmōps with the proceeds. They taste so disgusting I have to wash them down with fish and chips.

was that your kid I bought last week? Very satisfied with my purchase except how do I get said child to stop asking for Mum all day long, I just hear 'you're not my mum' over and over like a broken record. It slows down the whole work crew and laundry is piling up.

Hubblebubble · 04/04/2025 20:55

OP surely the aim isn't to become overweight, but to reach a healthy weight? And as plenty of people have already said, high calorie, nutrient dense whole foods don't need to cost the earth. Just add some nut butter to your porrige, a side of avocado to your lunch, switch your chicken breast for chicken thigh etc.

DurbevillesGirl2 · 04/04/2025 20:58

A lot of people taking the mick but I’ve honestly thought the same! I already feel like I eat loads and a lot of rubbish too but I see someone who is size 20 and think how can they afford that when food is so expensive!

Inertia · 04/04/2025 21:02

Struggling to understand how, in an area big enough to sustain multiple cafes, not one of them is selling a pie or cake.

Go on then, tell us what you ate today.

Calliopespa · 04/04/2025 21:06

Shame you can’t pack as many calories into a load of groceries as efficiently as you can pack judgment into a post.

Maybe you should find out a bit about nutrition and what foods are calorie and nutrient dense and which food are rich in muscle-building proteins. Clever shoppers can manage nutrient dense food not emptyheadedness calories. I think you are maybe wasting money on empty calories. Lots of processed junk can be costly.

I have heard some individuals just produce more excrement than others ( ie; food is not being properly absorbed)?

Calliopespa · 04/04/2025 21:15

MarinkyDinkyDink · 04/04/2025 19:40

Sorry I get all of this. Which is exactly why I am asking why, on 7 HUNDRED pounds, which I get is a lot more than a lot of people have to spend on food: I still can't gain weight. And asking if the amount of money (and as such, food) is the problem.

See the excrement theory ..,

Missmarplesknittingbuddy · 04/04/2025 21:15

I have reported this thread . Good try OP but I don't know a bridge anywhere that only sells salad.

rosemarble · 04/04/2025 21:16

Only read OP's posts.

OP, if you are literally unable to fill yourself up and are struggling to reach a healthy weight then maybe there is an underlying medical reason.

If you are trying to gain weight then you could try eating 3 meals and 3 snacks.
What meal was the scone with lots of butter? Was that part of one of the 3 meals you eat?

You could try telling us what you do actually eat and what you buy?

Some of what you say is a bit conflicting - you want a big bowl of chips from the cafe, but if you want a sausage roll you'll only eat a home made one. You drink full sugar coke, but only eat home cooked food.

Namexchangex · 04/04/2025 21:21

Couple of pints and a kebab.
Daily.

nicenicemaybe · 04/04/2025 21:21

What a horrible goady thread ! Cheap food is generally full of calories, you know that OP but you are just belittling people who are struggling to feed their families and definitely do not have £750 at their disposal.

This is daft, no one is forcing you to eat out so much which is where according to you half of your food budget is spent.

That's 350 on food shop and 350 on eating out (we live in a very cafe-y area, but it's like fancy quiche deli salad places. Ain't nobody getting fat on this stuff)

you could easily buy more fattening foods from the supermarket instead of the “deli salads” problem solved.

Wow, school holidays only just started and already the school kid troll posts out in force.

If this is legit then honestly get over yourself OP.

Can't believe this thread. OP, you know that the overweight people you see around town who you're so envious of, you know they're not all rich and privileged and spending >£700 per month on food, don't you
