If you're overweight, how much do you spend on food?

I suppose my AIBU is 'To think I can't afford to put on weight'... but I MUST be! I'm not on the breadline. But eating any more just looks SO expensive!

This is my question:

  1. I really want to put on weight
  2. Every time I go to buy excess food (thinking calorie surplus) I think of my bank account
  3. But when I go food shopping, I see soooo many overweight people. Some of whom MUST have less disposable income than me
  4. How have they got to that weight!?
  5. My jazzy banking app tells me I spend £700/mth on food (+3kids, no other adult).
  6. That's 350 on food shop and 350 on eating out (we live in a very cafe-y area, but it's like fancy quiche deli salad places. Ain't nobody getting fat on this stuff)
  7. Apparently UPF is great for putting on weight but I really don't like the taste and texture of processed food (which is apparently fab for making anybody overweight)
I like homemade, pure food. Like, if I want a sausage roll, I'll make sausage rolls. I don't like the taste of pre-made or cold food. I only really like hot and fresh, made on site etc.
  1. Food is so expensive! I don't buy snacks or crap for the house because it's just.. more money. But discussing snacking with school mums, I'm starting to think maybe I don't keep enough snacks in.
I only eat 3 meals, I can't dream what would happen to that £700 spend if I started snacking too!

If you are overweight: HOW!? Do you spend £700+ on food/mth?

I just want to understand the balance I need to make between my spend and my weight. Is my food spend unusually low? Do I need to start splashing out on the calories?

I get that being overweight for many isn't desirable. But being underweight is no treat either.

I'm tall. If I'm also underweight I look like Peter Crouch.

I would actually like some feedback on how much is reasonable to spend on food to put on weight.

I tried weight gain shakes, they're gross.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Eat the cheap food ‘poor people’ eat - high calorie and cheap (sugar, fat & carby) - and you’ll be a porker in no time.

Thank you to those suggesting carbs and frequent eating. I've started drinking a pint of blue milk before bed, and getting my thyroid checked for my metabolism.

I joined a gym to build up bulk but didn't even have the time to go, so quit.

I walk everywhere so probably metabolising far more than I want to.

And yes, cafes around here are fancy. Sorry. I do a detour on way to work so that I can go past a Greggs.

Also, there's a behaviour thing here. The comment re 'If I'm hungry and go in a shop with £1...'
If I'm hungry, I do not go in a shop with £1. I wait til dinner.

I was also raised by a mother with some serious issues with food, think 'you don't need to eat, just drink water' 🙄 so 'hungry' is a really familiar feeling and I need to learn to actually feed it and not leave it.

But all that costs more than £700!

The cost of living crisis means my wages are no longer enough to keep me in UPF to maintain my lardy arse. I now have to roll myself Violet Beauregard style into greggs, grab enough carbs to keep me going and then roll back out again. I’ve never been caught coz the Greggs I go to is on the top of a hill and I pick up quite a speed. They’ll never get me. Mwahahahaahahahahaa!

May I recommend to you a cheese habit? It's high in calories from fat, but the best cheese isn't a nasty, prole UPF. One never runs into low-class people at food festivals, farmers' markets or the cheese counter at Waitrose, the best places for posh cheese. They can't afford the prices. And of course, cheese is delightfully low carb, and you can make a hobby out of trying different varieties and thrilling your friends at dinner parties with your knowledge of 500 varieties of Roquefort.

Seriously: cheese is fab for those who want to put on weight. It's not stodgy, or high in sugar and you'll never find palm oil in a block of Cheddar. It has the same effect on those who don't want to put on weight, as I know to my cost, but it is the one foodstuff I could never give up. I could renounce chocolate if I had to and even pasta, but cheese never. If there was a religion devoted to it, I'd sign up.

Oh my! Fancy being as lucky as you! Us slobs who gorge all day can’t imagine. Personally I spend my entire £50k salary on beige food. I eat all day long and never stop.

You need to spend at least £750 A DAY at McDonald’s if you want a chance of gaining weight OP. Followed by £750 A DAY at Krispie Kreme.

Ok all the butter comments, I recently read Butter. I LOVE my food. My ex runs a takeaway. Food is big here.

This is why I don't understand how on £700, I can't gain weight.

I put butter on rice, noodles, porridge, fuck tonnes on scones.

I am TRYING to gain weight. What I'm asking is, am I not literally buying enough food?

Well yes, OP. But you have enough money to know there's always food in the cupboard/fridge/freezer at home, or to eat in a cafe. Lots don't and end up shopping hungry as soon as their income lands in the bank account.

You're either trolling or incredibly privileged and ignorant.

I sell my kids on Vinted and buy rőllmōps with the proceeds. They taste so disgusting I have to wash them down with fish and chips.

Although I’m not underweight, I lost a lot last year for no obvious reason, which turned out to be a vitamin B12 deficiency. Now I’m on quarterly injections my weight has mostly stabilised, but towards the end of the quarter it starts coming off again. Even though I know the reason, it makes me uneasy.

Do you like cheese? Adding extra cheese to things that usually only have a little of it in works well for me. Tastes great, isn’t massively expensive and increases dairy just like the extra milk you already mentioned does.

Do get yourself medically checked though, there’s a number of easy-to-fix things that can cause lack of weight gain

If You’re serious then start thinking about things that are calorie dense.
Full fat dairy, cream, butter, mayo. Nuts. Homemade and fresh obviously doesn’t necessarily mean low fat. Homemade sausage rolls have the same calories as shop bought! So does homemade cake.
