To be obsessively checking the weather and getting anxious ?

My DD and I, along with my elderly dad, are going on holiday to Turkey on Sunday. We are going to a lovely all-inclusive resort where we went last year and I’ve been paying for it all year. But now it seems that the weather is going to be pretty rubbish :( similar to here in terms of temperature (between15 and 20 degrees) and quite cloudy for most of the week.

I’m so disappointed to think that it might not be the lovely, sunny holiday we had last year, and also on a practical level I’m worried that it will be too cold to swim and there won’t be much to do for me, an 86 year old and a 5 year old!

Does anyone have any comfort? Do you think the weather forecast might be still subject to change? And if not, any suggestions for enjoying a non-sunny beach holiday?! I just wanted to relax and have a week off from thinking and planning everything all the time (I’m a single mum) and now it’s just giving me more anxiety!

I do realise that this is a bit of a first world problem!

I get that. I went on a holiday a few weeks back that was meant to be beach and sun, and instead it was a freak snow and ice storm with added rain, drizzle, and overcast skies. We ate and slept a lot, I was only warm enough when wearing the clothes for England vs ah d the flights, and at one weirdly low point we went to the cinema and learned that some countries have religious films at mainstream cinemas - you can't tell it from the descriptions!

dudsville · 03/04/2025 20:12

Sorry, you wanted comfort, all I've got to offer is sympathy!

Weather forecasts will often tell you about something that is only one or two hours in the day. You may be lucky.

UpUpUpU · 03/04/2025 20:17

That is rubbish. I really feel for you as we are off on holiday on Saturday and have been checking the weather daily (thankfully looking OK so far). I can only imagine how disappointing it is to know the weather may not be great.

Things can change though so don't give up hope.

Have a Google around your area for things to do. There was a thread a few days ago from an OP in Antalya. Not sure where you are going but its it here, have a hunt for the thread as it had lots of ideas,

Turkey is always risky in May, we went 2 years ago and a few hours of rain for a couple of days but it didn't spoil our holiday.

Hopefully it won't be as bad as the reports are saying amd you can still enjoy it.

Hayley1256 · 03/04/2025 20:18

Also take some games with you so you can play them indoors at the bar/lobby it does start to rain

dairydebris · 03/04/2025 20:21

There's loads of stuff to do in turkey if the weather isn't great. The historical stuff is unbearable when it's too hot.
I bet you'll have a decent amount of time at between 20 and 25.
Do check if you have a heated pool as adjust expectations. I've found pools in turkey and the sea obvs too cold to swim for long at all in April.
And the food!

KebabCancelled · 03/04/2025 20:24

Obsessively checking the forecast will not change anything.

… but it will drive you insane.

once you are there - you go with the flow - fretting and worrying will not change a thing - radical acceptance - where you learn to accept the cards dealt to you - is a much healthier way to live.

Zanatdy · 03/04/2025 20:27

checking the weather will just make you more anxious. Unfortunately it’s a risk in April. You’ll have to just roll with it. Have a look at other things to do, will be good to see more of the country you’re going to anyway so might be a plus in the end.

At the moment we are in tenerife who have given a red alert, schools closed. Some bars and activities closed.
Yes this morning was windy but warm.
At 3pm sun came out. We are now sitting outside having a meal.
No one can tell what the weather will be like.

BallerinaRadio · 03/04/2025 20:55

You can't change the weather, so there's no point worrying about it just make the most of the holiday when you get there

BendingSpoons · 03/04/2025 20:57

I have just bought my kids wetsuits to keep them warmer in the pools. Hopefully then they can swim even if it's not that warm.

We are the same, did a long walk along the coast then sat at the pool from 4pm onwards!!

It's annoying when bad weather happens but instead of holding onto the stress of the weather, try to start to reframe it. You're still going away and not having to cook/clean etc. You could look at stuff to do nearby.

Who knows it might all change by the time you get there x

Nextdoortomeis · 03/04/2025 21:37

@Colinthedaxi come and join us in the bar.
Mines a vodka 🤪

BarbaraVineFan · 03/04/2025 22:30

Thanks all. A wetsuit is a good idea- just ordered one! I’m going to try to step away from the weather forecast I think!

We’re in Bangkok at the moment. The forecast for the past couple of weeks consistently said rain and thunderstorms for the whole time we are here. Yesterday was a bit overcast and today is glorious sunshine. Not a drop of rain to be seen.

BarbaraVineFan · 04/04/2025 10:52

Just getting a pre-holiday pedicure and all your comments are making me feel better, thank you! Even if the weather isn't great, at least we will be in a lovely place and have everything provided :)

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable. There’s nothing worse than going somewhere for sun and not getting it. It puts such a dampener on the holiday. We went away to tenerife and it was cloudy the whole week. We tried to make the most of it but it was crap
