To be frustrated with the school about the Easter egg situation?

So, the school sent home a note last week about the “Easter egg raffle” they’re doing, asking for donations of Easter eggs for the kids to win as prizes. Fair enough, I thought, seems like a nice thing to do.

But here’s the issue: they want each child to donate an Easter egg by tomorrow. Fine, except… my children have been having Easter eggs since early March because, well, they’re kids. The idea of giving yet another egg just seems so unnecessary to me. I’m already drowning in chocolate from my own absolutely brilliant planning of Easter, and I’m not sure I want to add to the pile just for the school raffle. Plus, when I mentioned it to a few other parents, it turns out they all feel the same!

It feels like they just don’t get it. I already pay for everything (I’m talking school trips, PTA fundraisers, fancy dress days, the whole shebang) and now it’s Easter eggs as well? I’m all for supporting the school, but they never ask for things in a way that’s actually affordable or considerate of family budgets. AIBU to feel like this is just another example of unnecessary school demands?

Also, they’ve made it clear that if you don’t donate, your child might not get to participate in the raffle. I get the whole “voluntary contribution” thing, but when it’s linked to something like this, it just feels a bit much. Honestly, I can’t be the only one who thinks this is all a bit tone-deaf.

Am I being unreasonable or is it just another case of the school not understanding how much we’re all juggling at the moment?

TL;DR: AIBU to be frustrated that the school expects us to donate an Easter egg on top of everything else, and if we don’t, our kids miss out on the raffle?

You don't want your children to win an Easter egg,but you're happy to give them eggs to eat at home?! That makes zero sense! Just buy a £1.50 egg and donate it, they might not win anything!

SophieAnt · 04/04/2025 20:33

I'm so confused by this. Why have you got all these Easter eggs and why are you eating them? Do you mean little ones like creme eggs/mini eggs? I've never heard of anyone eating big eggs before Easter or buying them in large numbers.

If you look at the ops posts there should be options to either "see next" or "see all"
Which shows you all of ops posts
It works on the website, I can't remember if it's the same on the app, but even if not you should be able to set it so ops posts all show up in a different colour, so you can do a quick scroll and see if they've replied/added more info

Ah great this is really helpful. I had no idea I could do this and spend ages scrolling through it all

Easter eggs are not presents, they're food. Easter doesnt have any presents.

Are hot cross buns presents?

Or simnel cake for those that still have that?

People used to give children a new outfit for Easter.

What are you going to wear when we go to the beach next week, I’m going to wear my Easter dress.

What would be wrong with that?

Anddrumrollplease · 04/04/2025 21:02

Another one confused about eating eggs for weeks already! We had a little tiny one at school today as they were given out for the end of term. Then we will be having a couple (again mini ones) on Wednesday as we are throwing an easter party, then DS will have one Easter egg for good Friday, possibly one from Nanny and that's it! Am I mean in this respect? I just figure DC have enough snacks and treats tbh - I've been trying to knock that on the head - and the idea of constantly having Easter eggs in the house just seems unnecessary.

Regarding the one more thing to do - I get it. But maybe donate one this year if you have loads and communicate how you and other parents feel to the PTA.

Food can be a present and often is, but people are equating eating eggs to opening christmas presents, its not the same

Eating eggs is the same as eating mince pies and hot cross buns

Except Easter presents aren't really a thing. If you're giving a gift at Easter it usually is an egg. So unlike Christmas where there is a tradition of both presents and specific foods at Easter it's generally one and the same thing. So eggs are usually saved until Easter Sunday itself.

DS got given a small one at Cubs this week then we had a guest for one night who brought one each for a of us. They've all gone up on a shelf until Easter Sunday. We didn't even discuss it, didn't cross either DH's or my mind to open them before the day.

Ilovecleaning · 04/04/2025 21:04

Seems over indulgent to allow kids to eat Easter eggs 6 weeks before Easter. What’s the point? Takes away all the anticipation and sense of occasion.

ConsuelaHammock · 04/04/2025 21:20

It’s not the school! Most people give their children an egg for Easter . It is not normal to eat them throughout March. You are making an issue out of absolutely nothing.
Ps I find I have more money for the things I need when I don’t spend it on crap I don’t.

Judecb · 04/04/2025 21:29

Very sad!!

Just leaving a pointless comment to say that I love this thread title. I’m going to have to make a compilation of faves soon. Nothing to add in addition to some v good points already made.

Your children have been having Easter eggs since six weeks before Easter "because they're kids"? What does that mean?

Did anyone else only get Easter Eggs on Easter Sunday?

Me. Only ever on Easter Sunday. Feels odd for me to see them so early in the shops. They had them in January in our local Tesco.

It’s not really the schools fault you’ve been giving your kids Easter eggs since the start of March!
My kids got an egg from school day, but they don’t get it until Easter because it’s an Easter egg, surely that’s the normal way to do it?

We literally are ours on the walk to the carpark from school today 🤣
It was sunny and we were due to be somewhere the car would have sat in the sun for 2+ hours. It was already very soft by the time we'd walked to the carpark... Would have been goo a few hours later 🤷‍♀️

thaegumathteth · 04/04/2025 22:08

anyone who dislikes the idea is welcome to a/ not take part and / or b/ attend future PTA meetings and come up with and execute better ideas

i still get my kids clothes for Easter. Called ‘Pacey new’ clothes. Not sure why!

Also the idea of opening an Easter egg before Easter is abhorrent but I’m not sure why really.

PorridgeEater · 04/04/2025 23:17

If buying an Easter egg is a problem, don't be buying them through March. Though do think the school should have given you more notice. And daresay some would say school should be promoting healthy eating rather than chocolate.
I prefer to wait till after Easter and get eggs reduced / half price - offspring fine with that as they get more chocolate!

NotVeryFunny · 05/04/2025 00:27

uhOhOP · 03/04/2025 19:41

Yes that’s not a thing. Do you give them their Christmas presents before Christmas too? Easter Sunday must be very underwhelming if they’ve been stuffing themselves with eggs for weeks. Plus it’s ok to have a blow out on a couple of days a year (my DC always had unlimited choc/sweets on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day) not great to do that for weeks on end.

Isxmasoveryet · 05/04/2025 03:15

So r u complaining that it the school fault Ur kids have had Easter eggs daily for six weeks or what school do they go to that they are aloud that much chocolate

I thought big eggs were for Easter Sunday morning I aloud one egg on Easter Friday but nothing else to Easter Sunday

Buckarooo · 05/04/2025 06:57

My DD 5 has already been given 4 eggs. It's mad

Gherkinslice · 05/04/2025 07:44

ScaryM0nster · 03/04/2025 19:42

So you don’t want your children to have any more chocolate. And you don’t want to donate an egg. And if you don’t donate, your kids might not get one.

This sounds like it’s got it own built in solution.

This! But if you're drowning in chocolate - why not do yours a favour and just donate one (each?) from your children as they won't even notice, to make it fair on them and those who genuinely cannot afford an egg. Presume they each get a raffle ticket and win an egg which may be of differing size and value?

charabang · 05/04/2025 08:18

Well I've been troughing creme eggs for weeks but wouldn't dream of opening a proper easter egg before Easter Sunday. It's part and parcel of school life to have these 'obligations' come up in the school calendar and it can feel overwhelming sometimes, but you do have a choice. My GD goes to a non poverty school where they have made a deliberate stance to not ask for the extras; there is no payment required for non uniform day for example (and uniform is non logo"d for affordability btw) It's designed to make school life inclusive for all families.

Baravia · 05/04/2025 10:48

Oh to be a fly on the wall at playtime lol
"I've got a mountain of easter eggs at home!"
"Already?!"
"Yeah for a month now"
"WOW can we all come round and play?"
