To be frustrated with the school about the Easter egg situation?

So, the school sent home a note last week about the “Easter egg raffle” they’re doing, asking for donations of Easter eggs for the kids to win as prizes. Fair enough, I thought, seems like a nice thing to do.

But here’s the issue: they want each child to donate an Easter egg by tomorrow. Fine, except… my children have been having Easter eggs since early March because, well, they’re kids. The idea of giving yet another egg just seems so unnecessary to me. I’m already drowning in chocolate from my own absolutely brilliant planning of Easter, and I’m not sure I want to add to the pile just for the school raffle. Plus, when I mentioned it to a few other parents, it turns out they all feel the same!

It feels like they just don’t get it. I already pay for everything (I’m talking school trips, PTA fundraisers, fancy dress days, the whole shebang) and now it’s Easter eggs as well? I’m all for supporting the school, but they never ask for things in a way that’s actually affordable or considerate of family budgets. AIBU to feel like this is just another example of unnecessary school demands?

Also, they’ve made it clear that if you don’t donate, your child might not get to participate in the raffle. I get the whole “voluntary contribution” thing, but when it’s linked to something like this, it just feels a bit much. Honestly, I can’t be the only one who thinks this is all a bit tone-deaf.

Am I being unreasonable or is it just another case of the school not understanding how much we’re all juggling at the moment?

TL;DR: AIBU to be frustrated that the school expects us to donate an Easter egg on top of everything else, and if we don’t, our kids miss out on the raffle?

Why are the kids eating Easter eggs already? Maybe you should learn to say no and have self control.

I bought a Cadburys egg for around 75p the other day there is some very cheap eggs out there. And if you have bought your kids loads of eggs, I'm guessing since they have been eating them since March, can't you just donate one of their eggs?

pelargoniums · 04/04/2025 18:29

Donating an Easter egg feels like one of the easier primary school asks – certainly lower effort than “dress like a medieval castle servant day” or “turn this shoebox into an emergency vehicle (don’t forget a ribbon loop to hang it up!)” or 67 fun phonics games sheets a week to do in all that free time parents of young notoriously have or the last-minute drop-in musical pancake assembly fun run or homemade baking for the spring fete that you then buy back so in total a single fairy cake costs you about a tenner once you factor in the ingredients and entry price.

Funnily, DD normally doesn’t get an egg till Easter Sunday but this year she was given one as a school prize (not that we had to donate to). She’s still got half of it lurking in the cupboard: there’s no real “because kids” reason to unleash chocolate on them six weeks early. (And I’m not normally the MN sugar police massive salad type.)

latetothefisting · 04/04/2025 07:45

Op it's fine, you've acknowledged you were maybe a bit ott now but most of MN can't seem to work out how to use the "see all" post so will keep sticking the boot in.

If its more that the Easter eggs are the tip of an iceberg of requests from the school maybe think about how you can word that constructively and perhaps email them asking if they can plan events up front and tell parents a term in advance, or just minimise requests to one per half term?

Where is this see all button you speak of? I can go back each page and read everything but that can take alot of time

Schoolchoicesucks · 04/04/2025 18:36

Apart from a creme egg, I don't think I have ever eaten an Easter egg before Easter Sunday. Don't know why I am such a stickler for the "rules". I don't observe Lent. But eating a big egg before Easter feels very scandalous!

Redpeach · 04/04/2025 18:36

I thought the easter bunny only came at actual easter

Bringmeahigherlove · 04/04/2025 18:38

Another post to moan about schools. Boringgggg.

Wow, so your kids have been eating eggs since early March and yet you’re whinging about donating one to the school! Unbelievable!!

Jumpers4goalposts · 04/04/2025 19:05

YABU let’s just stick the kids in a classroom and teach them let’s strip all the fun bits and the memory makers from them.

CoffeeCakeAndDaisys · 04/04/2025 19:07

Do your children have lots of lovely things at school? If so I’m guessing that all these ‘add ons’ that you’re talking about allow the PTA or school to provide them.

I wish people could see how pushed school budgets are, there is literally just enough to pay staff and keep the lights on. There are so many extras that schools would like to provide that they can’t, all these small events help to do just some of those treats.

I’d hope for most people a £1/£1.25 egg is something they can afford and doesn’t seem an unreasonable amount. Our school always asks for a donation if you can afford it, if not it’s no big deal. If you feel your children have had too many Easter eggs already and you don’t agree with donating egg, just don’t do it and don’t enter them into the raffle, that way there’s no chance of them having even more chocolate.

vickylou78 · 04/04/2025 19:08

Sorry I know not the point of the thread but why are you giving Easter eggs to your kids in March? Easter Sunday isn't until 20th April! What will you do on actual Easter?

(Although must admit I've eaten two or three Cadbury creme eggs already!!)

Think you may be over thinking it though surely just bung a cheap egg or two on weeks shopping list to give to school.

SharpFox · 04/04/2025 19:25

Why are your kids eating eggs before Easter? Isn't that like opening Xmas presents in November?

Catzeyes01 · 04/04/2025 19:32

If you want your children to take part it's only fair you contribute, you don't need to spend a lot, go to Aldi they are very reasonable there or poundland

soupyspoon · 04/04/2025 19:32

Biker47 · 04/04/2025 13:34

The amount of pearl clutching in here about the OP giving their kids Easter eggs before Easter is hilarious. I've already had 3 and my kids have had one each so far.

I know its bizarre. You would think the OP admitted to killing cats or something, the outrage on here.

Lovemeapickledgherkin · 04/04/2025 19:43

Wishboneswishes · 03/04/2025 19:44

I’m struggling to understand why your kids have been having Easter eggs since March?
Do you not buy them and/or keep them until it’s actually Easter - like Easter Sunday? Makes the event more special/meaningful surely?

Is it just me?

It’s not just you. Easter eggs are for …Easter. The anticipation makes it special. And if they’re allowed to trough their way through multiple eggs before the Easter holiday has even begun that’s a pretty crap lesson for them.

SwanOfThoseThings · 04/04/2025 19:46

Seems a bit pointless for each child to donate an egg, and then get an egg back again in the raffle.

Luckypinkduck · 04/04/2025 19:52

We never have our eggs before Easter Sunday, it's like opening Christmas presents before Christmas day! One from us and then ones from other family members. We do end up with a lot but I help out haha.
I think here is your problem not the school.

soupyspoon · 04/04/2025 19:57

Easter eggs are not presents, they're food. Easter doesnt have any presents.

Are hot cross buns presents?

Or simnel cake for those that still have that?

Pandalott · 04/04/2025 18:32

If you look at the ops posts there should be options to either "see next" or "see all"
Which shows you all of ops posts
It works on the website, I can't remember if it's the same on the app, but even if not you should be able to set it so ops posts all show up in a different colour, so you can do a quick scroll and see if they've replied/added more info

Like food can't be a present? Don't be daft

Santina · 04/04/2025 20:08

Another example of every child has to win. No wonder children can't cope when they fail 🙄

Food can be a present and often is, but people are equating eating eggs to opening christmas presents, its not the same

Eating eggs is the same as eating mince pies and hot cross buns

Taytayslayslay · 04/04/2025 20:22

rollon22now · 03/04/2025 19:49

Meh! An egg costs @£1.25.
and it’s your fault entirely if you’ve been giving your kids Easter eggs before Easter. Most folk generally wait until the day before giving out Easter eggs. It’s a bit like giving the kids their Santa presents on 10th December…

Exactly, my 2 kids have had creme eggs but they don't have an Easter egg until.. Easter.

eastegg · 04/04/2025 20:22

JoyousEagle · 03/04/2025 19:43

I don’t understand the issue really. Easter eggs are cheap (small boxed ones are less than a pound in my local Asda), and if you’re “drowning in chocolate” stop buying them over a month before Easter, and give one away? And I don’t see how you’d be adding to your pile if you’re donating one?

Edited

This.

The entire OP makes not one ounce of sense.

Why are kids having Easter eggs from early March, when Easter is 20th April??
Easter Eggs are for .... EASTER!

Shops are keen to make profits and unfortunately, some people fall for it. Now we can see why Christmas, Halloween etc tat seems to appear earlier and earlier in the shops every year.
