Moving home - council help!?

Feelinglost10 · 03/04/2025 17:51

Hi

basically I just need some advice as I am so stressed at the moment. So I am currently private rental but my IDVA and the council have given me priority to move as I am currently under a DV priority so have band A I’m extremely grateful as iv never even been on council housing before and I know this is a lot more secure than private renting, however in the mean time my landlord has decided to sell next month! So I am really struggling as I’m bidding every week and getting nowhere, however I need to be out by the end of next month! I have a dog so temporary housing isn’t a option as I would be most likely be given a hostel and have to give up my dog who is my entire world, however if I try and find a temporary house myself I would be removed from the council list back stuck renting private and unsecure incase the new landlord decided to sell again. I just don’t really know what to do at the moment?? Any advice will be welcome?

YABU would you wait it out and see if I’m offered something by next month and risk the temporary housing

YANBU find another private rental in the mean time and lose my place on the list?

"I would never allow for my dog to be separated from me"

Your options could well be you in temporary housing and your dog in a foster scheme for people escaping DV - or you with your dog living on the streets.
If you love the dog, the former is probably a better option.

Which would absolutely never happen. He is a rescue dog and been through enough. I would break myself going private before I put him through any more trauma

This is ridiculous. Your housing situation needs to be your priority - not your animal.

My “animal” absolutely plays a huge role THANKYOU so will be included in my priorities. Maybe some of us just see “animals” as family members and don’t want to cause them undue suffering

With kindness are you actually here to listen to the helpful advice you are being given by some of us, or just to argue with everyone? Stop biting and get on with your homework, time isn't on your side and you've been given plenty of good advice to go on with.

Dairymilkisminging · 03/04/2025 20:26

I've done this exact situation. My council was really good. There is two separate lists in our council the normal bidding one and the homeless list. You can't be on both. We just moved to the homeless list as it was getting close to our section 21 date. Council rang and offered us a house as temporary accommodation wouldn't be suitable for us. We left I think 2 weeks after our section 21 notice but we kept our landlord updated and still paid the rent ect.
If you don't leave after your date they'll have to take you to court to get bailiffs/eviction notice don't leave before this. Will take a good few months before this will happen.

I'd stay on the council list.

TheNightingalesStarling · 03/04/2025 20:30

Talk to your landlord... they won't want the expense of an eviction any more than you want one so if they know you are high on council house bidding and if you are willing to allow viewings etc they may be happybto give you more time.

I’m here for helpful advice. Not people who are just bored and sat on their phones trying to nit pick with things that have absolutely nothing to do with the situation such as telling me what importance my dog is

Ah thankyou! I wasn’t aware of that. As the reason I’m actually on the list isn’t due to the homeless situation that’s just another added delight that got flung on me recently so hopefully that should help. The manager I have been dealing with is off until the 9th so il try and hang out until then and talk to her

It isn’t a family member. It’s a pet.

Which is your strange unasked for opinion on a topic not one single person asked for?. I take it your bored and thought you would throw that out there to see what attention it might bring?

Isn’t it… a lot of council properties especially the new builds prioritise applications work working people! some want a mix of kids and no kid families etc. it’s a secure home that isn’t likely to increase ridiculously and as I say and fully stand by a LOT of the council homes that get given to those who have never contributed and some have only just moved over here I absolutely will be accepting one should I be offered something in time as why the hell not?! Everyone has a different story and for me to be deemed high priority I clearly am classed as eligible without giving too much of my private life away.

I don't have an issue with your eligibility and I hope you get offered a property soon.

What I do object to is you judging other people who live in council homes as if they're less worthy than you. If the council has a system in place to offer properties to the people who need them most then all of those tenants you're looking down on are just as worthy as you.

Nope. Just trying to throw some sanity into the conversation.

Beautifulweeds · 03/04/2025 21:12

Are you working or on UC? I think if claiming benefits the council have to subscribe temporary accommodation, may also be the case otherwise.

There are places which accommodate pets so please don't give up hope! I couldn't bear to not have my dog with me so would rather be homeless and have her with me. Xx

And you've been given that. Did you check the link I posted for you? There are landlords there who will guide you through the process. But instead here you are still arguing. Seriously, you've got bigger things to worry about right now.

Listen I don’t meant to be rude but iv lived here all my life and paid taxes since I was 18yrs old … if I can get a secure house for me and my family I am accepting it! Never mind that’s not what theyr for when the majority of people living in them have never contributed a penny to the system, I don’t even want to get into a conversation of that nature though!

Paying taxes doesn’t mean you’re special. Millions of people pay taxes and don’t get a council property.

Nobody said they are less worthy than me. Infact it was others who deem ME less worthy because I could afford to go private rather than go on the street?

I’m working at the moment! So I could realistically go private at a push but definitely couldn’t afford anywhere properly on my own as the housing rates at the moment are so expensive and il be doing it all alone and a I completely agree my dog is literally like my comfort through everything that’s happened I couldn’t imagine being without him x

Where did I say it makes me special? I’m not getting a place due to me paying taxes, I’m actually getting one because my ex has made my life a living hell, beat me to a pulp, beat me so bad I lost a baby and moved to a house opposite me and there’s pretty much f all I can do is it’s within his bail limitations and courts are full so waiting for a trial date could have me waiting a long time. Happy with those gory details or shall I expand further on how it’s affecting my mental health etc?

It’s just a section 21 I was given with 8 weeks notice on. But I literally don’t have a clue about this stuff or what happens and whether they could come and put me on the street if I don’t leave? That’s my main fear.

No, They cannot put you out on the streets. There are only 2 people who can end your tenancy.....YOU or A JUDGE. Your Landlord CANNOT end your tenancy. The S21 is basically your Landlord giving you notice that she intends to apply to the court to end your tenancy. The waiting list for that to happen is HUGE. It was an 18 month wait even for a court date a few years back..... It'll likely be 6-8 months minimum before you get a date, and the judge might say no. You'll be given a further X weeks to move out, and if you STILL don't go then your Landlord will have to go back to court to enforce the order and get bailiffs. It might seem scary but you have many many months before you'll actually have to get out.

Do NOT voluntarily move out, that will be classed as intentionally making yourself homeless and you'll lose favour with the council.

If the person who beat you to a pulp is living over the road from you. Then surely you are not safe ? How comes the council has not already put you in emgency accommodation due to safety. Or a refuge? Is there a non-molestation order ?

What are his bail conditions?

Beautifulweeds · 03/04/2025 22:59

Private rental is ridiculously expensive! Is there any way you get a mortgage? The payments are so much less. Wishing you the best of luck. Xxx

Nothing has changed at the moment?

i was regarding the speed at which you need to move and the sale progressing etc!

We were in similar circumstances but had things progress quicker than the landlord initially anticipated and ended up needing temporary council accommodation for 6 months before they offered us a home. It wasn’t a palace but it was a perfectly serviceable little flat with everything we needed. The housing team were actually really helpful so it’s always worth keeping them/your application updated with any new information.

FateReset · 04/04/2025 18:42

Don't give up your place on list for a dog! I know he's your world now, but think longterm.

Is it worth struggling with private rentals for the next 20-30 years or so, when you have an amazing chance to get a secure council tenancy, a house that suits your needs? Dogs live short lives in comparison.

I imagine you'll struggle to find one that accepts dogs, you're narrowing your options massively. Can you not have relatives, friends or a rescue centre look after dog while you secure your new home?
