To ask what your most stupid work telling off was?

I need cheering up so if you'd like to share the most stupid reasons you've been told off for at work, that would help!

I've just been issued a formal warning for not following sickness procedures. I returned to work today after being off work since last Monday. Literally "Hi, welcome back. Here's a warning". The reason I didnt follow sickness procedures was because I texted my boss each day instead of phoning in. She replied so she received them. Why did I text? I collapsed on Sunday evening and was in hospital until Sunday. TBH they are lucky I remembered to contact them at all for the first few days. I certainly wasn't in a state to talk.

Same job a few months back. I was organising a conference for 350 people. I needed to confirm numbers so sent a professional email to everyone asking thrm to confirm attendance, dietary and other requirement etc. If they hadn't replied by the deadline, I would phone them. Plenty of time to do this. Nope. Not good enough. I had to recall the email and spend 3 days calling people instead. Great use of time, boss!

Finally, last month, I was sent an email bitching about me. They'd obviously put my name in the address, instead of the subject. I just replied "I don't think this was meant for me". Apparently that was "unprofessional" and upset the people who'd sent it! In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have replied, just to watch them squirm.

Yes, I'm stepping up my job hunt.

I was once emailed and ‘told off’ because I’d been hole punching documents incorrectly. (I hadn’t but my boss was a control freak and a right cow)

I can (sort of) top the 'not phoning in sick' as I was in emergency surgery (given a 50/50 chance of coming out alive after sepsis) followed by 2 weeks in intensive care. My hubby called on my behalf, but was told it was 'ok just this once, but we'll need to speak to her tomorrow'. I was in a coma!

I was told off for playing music with profanities very loudly in the store where I had a Saturday job. We were allowed to play our own CDs, I had just got the new Reverend Black Grape album on my lunch break and couldn't wait until I got home to listen to it. One song has the word Bulls**t said very loudly 4 times in a row and I couldn't switch it off fast enough. Someone complained to upper management and we got told off and then had to have the generic store music.

Back when I was teaching, the Head called me in to the office to tell me off because I hadn't made enough effort on a pyjama day and had merely draped a dressing gown over my clothes instead of going the whole hog and wearing my actual nightwear.

I got told off because when the Modern Languages Department was marking Bastille Day I didn't wear red, white and blue, I explained that red is a colour I never wear, my shoes were blue and my knickers were white! I also said that if the wanted to mark Hitler's birthday I had quite a few black shirts, that went down well, not!

inmyera · 01/04/2025 19:24

I went to school in another country where they put a dash through their sevens, so I always have. Donkeys years ago I worked at a bank where we shuffled bits of paper around and one day the FD went ballistic at me because he didn't like my dashes through my sevens. I didn't hang around for long.

This is so funny! (It's a great album.)
Reminds me of when my BIL was a trainee accountant and as a prank changed their telephone "hold" music to "Fatboy Slim is Fucking in Heaven". He never owned up so didn't get told off.

Was looking for opportunities outside organisation and stupidly thought current manager (at the time) would have had same attitude as previous manager - bear in mind I'd worked hard during a very difficult time of transition - I had had positive response to application and asked manager for reference, if needed. He replied "You shit"

Gosh you need a new job. As a manager I much prefer texts, i want to avoid awkward conversation..plus texts are a record of what was said /times /illness etc. People.are ill or they would be in work. I don't want to make it more difficult.

Got followed into the toilets and screamed at for my unprofessional behaviour in a meeting. Was spinning a fidget ring on my thumb and I have ADHD. It was the HR Director that screamed at me.

Not me but a colleague was once taken to one side by her manager as she had stapled some documents together and the staple was not quite in the correct place.

I had the same comment made to me in my early 20s. I then asked politely where the staple should be and was met with an eye roll followed by a gruff, vague instruction, and a lot of tutting. My response to that was that I wanted to get it right for next time and I was then accused of being passive aggressive.

Sometimes you just can't win with some people 😎

Sadtosaythis · 01/04/2025 19:37

I once got told off in my one to one because I had been taking my lunch hour and leaving the building with colleagues to eat. Apparently lunch break wasn’t a part of my social life and as a team leader I was not setting a good example. I was never late back and didn’t always take the full hour. Followed by being told she didn’t like the way I always seem to get my own way. She then burst into tears and walked out on me, came back five minutes later and said “well that’s how not to do a one to one!”.

When I was a student nurse, I was told off by the Nurse Manager in charge of the operating theatres for knitting in the staff canteen during my unpaid lunchbreak! Apparently it looked unprofessional, and despite the fact that it was an unpaid break, I still had to make sure I was behaving professionally.

I am, to this day, not sure about what was so unprofessional about knitting.

Did you train at the same hospital as me?! I got told off for everything I did in the theatres staff room as a student nurse. I’ve never known a staff room with so many unwritten (and complex) rules.
There were special zones for each staff groups to sit in. I once sat in the anaesthetists’ area, not good. But not as bad as when I sat in the porters area. You’d think I’d sat on the Kings’s throne.

Velvetgoldmine · 01/04/2025 19:47

I have a thing about white rubber and bit the button off the photocopier (couldn't help myself). Got told off by the engineer when he came to unjam the thing.

Storynanny1 · 01/04/2025 19:49

Retired infant teacher here- I’ve had many tellings off!

  1. Reprimanded by a headteacher after a parent complained to her that I’d “ made” their child put a coat on to go out to play ( a 6 year old in December)
  2. Told off by a parent for letting their child catch nits.
  3. Told off many times by parents for failing to keep track of an unarmed school jumper.
  4. Told off by a parent for “ letting” their child chew the cuff of their school jumper.
  5. ” Failed” a lesson observation and reprimanded because I omitted to quiz the children about what they could do next time to get better at the task- they were reception children playing in the sand with different sized cups.

Rarely a week goes by in school where the teacher isn’t getting told off or criticised for something!

Storynanny1 · 01/04/2025 19:51

The majority of head teachers I’ve worked under for 40 years have never defended their hardworking staff over such complaints.

Loving the unarmed jumper. Is that like a tank top, or just a pacifist jumper?

You teachers have my absolute respect. I don't know how you put up with such ridiculousness from all angles.

8misskitty8 · 01/04/2025 19:59

Me and a colleague got told off by another staff member for ‘whispering ‘ and too much of that was going on.

I told her that if I want to whisper I will as it’s none of her business what we were talking about as it is private.

Said colleague is a nosy bitch.

Handbagcuriosity · 01/04/2025 20:00

I was temping and took a really difficult call from a colleague who was seeing to a client. It took ages for me to understand what she was talking about and what she wanted as she was going off on tangents and was being really vague about what the client needed.
I had to ask a load of questions to get to the bottom of it.

After the call one of the team said wow that was a difficult phone call and I said I know it took forever but I finally got there. I’d also made notes on the system. The manager of the team shouted at me in front of everyone , it’s years ago but I still remember word for word “these are important calls love, now I’m going to have to ring her back and sort it out” as she bashed about the desk grabbing the phone in a dramatic fashion.

I hate being called love and it was pretty humiliating. I couldn’t be arsed to even explain that there was nothing to sort. I just
finished the shift and at the end told them I wouldn’t be coming back.

She made more of a fool of herself as she’d completely misunderstood what had happened and created a drama for no reason.

Some people are just arseholes! Good luck with the job hunt OP

I worked as a waitress in a cafe when I was a student. The cafe was co owned by two people. One of them had lots of experience in the sector, the other was the financial backer but pretty useless. He used to posture around the cafe and I used to get bollocked for his shitty customer service. A customer complained about his conduct to the other owner, he butchered a fresh cake by cutting it into really unequal pieces, a table complained about his awful coffees. All of this was my fault apparently. I didn't stay long.

Yep. Not proud.

Savoury · 01/04/2025 20:11

I got massively told off for fixing a problem. The right thing to do was tell everyone, wait to be told to fix it and then fix it.

20 years later and I’m still confused as to why!!

Frostynoman · 01/04/2025 20:19

I was told off by the owner as their son had broken into a venue via and underground tunnel I might add after I had cleared and closed it an after event and he then proceeded to have a very messy party. Needless to say I refused to clear it up and offered a letter of resignation with some very choice wording
