To report my neighbour for smoking weed?

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 31/03/2025 17:22

Suns out and my nightmare NDN has started blaring loud music and smoking weed outside, I don’t mind what people do in their own homes however I’ve just had to get all my washing in from outside and shut my windows as the smell is coming in home. Every summer since she’s moved in has been the same and my children always complain of the smell of they have their windows open. AIBU to report her? Her home is social housing so not sure who I should report too but I just can’t face another summer of being unable to open my windows. Before anyone suggests talking to her she’s the unreasonable type who is always screaming at her kids and not friendly at all

Just call the feds the next time she does it 😂

fratellia · 31/03/2025 17:24

I’m not sure if they can really do anything about it?

I have the same from a neighbour from time to time, I hate the smell 🤢

Elmo230885 · 31/03/2025 17:24

Yes. It's antisocial and you have the right to enjoy your own home & garden.

Fancycheese · 31/03/2025 17:25

I feel you. I have the same thing with my neighbour and I also can’t stand the smell. However I think it’s just part and parcel of living cheek by jowl in a densely populated area. I doubt anything would or could be done and I’m not sure what would stop her! I unfortunately used to date someone with a significant weed habit and he would have walked over broken glass to have a smoke.

fedup1212 · 31/03/2025 17:26

I mean, you could, but I doubt anything would come of it.

InspiritingNotion · 31/03/2025 17:26

The police really don't have time for this, unless you think they're dealing or cultivating large quantities.

I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but individuals smoking weed at home making laundry smell genuinely isn't something the police, CPS, or the courts are going to go hard over.

fratellia · 31/03/2025 17:28

It does seem to be everywhere, we back onto social housing and the smell comes from one of the gardens. My mum and dad live in a posher area and you can always smell it from the big house next door to them so its in all kinds of places.

Edited

It is illegal though so she could be charged.
And I'm sure a housing association wouldn't be happy about it either

Yes, this. As unpleasant as it is, someone having a BBQ could have the same effect re smells and washing.

Could yes. Would, probably not. Police v unlikely to care about personal use.

SometimesCalmPerson · 31/03/2025 17:30

It’s just part of having neighbours unfortunately.

Baconmaple · 31/03/2025 17:30

HA would follow up on this.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 31/03/2025 17:35

I'm an ASB officer at a housing association. HAs have zero power to deal with it, unless police secure a criminal conviction as until that points it's just a "noxious smell" and you can't prove it's illegal cannabis (yes yes, I know we all know the smell, but with so many legal/prescribed cannaboids that also smell you can't prove it's illegal cannabis with a smell) until police say it is.

At best the HA might send them a letter, but that is all they can do realistically.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 31/03/2025 17:37

You can however report the loud music, and they may ask you to do diary sheets or use the noise app or even just point you to environmental health. However, loud music during sociable hours can be sketchy as to whether it is a tenancy breach.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 31/03/2025 17:40

Thanks all for the advice I’m guessing there’s no point reporting and wouldn’t normally consider it but the smell is literally coming in my house so strong and I only had 1 window open. Think I’ve just had enough of the last few years of wild parties and antisocial behaviour 😭

Report to the council but be prepared to be ignored

DagenhamDaisy · 31/03/2025 17:45

They won't do anything about it trust me.

I live in an area with a massive amount of social housing and this is such a common complaint in the community Facebook groups.

Yet the HAs, the council and the police couldn't give a tiny fart I'm afraid.

The police aren't charging anyone.

Even if she lived in a corner house and they happened to walk by on the other side of the fence, they'll just tell her to put it out and that's if they even bother.

You’d likely have more success with a noise disturbance claim. As pp have said, keep track of noise at unsociable hours.

Incorrect!!

HAs have no powers to enforce without a conviction by police proving its illegal cannabis.

Councils can issue CPW/Ns but only with significant evidence, again, needing proof it's illegal cannabis. Ditto if its their tenants or a homeowner btw.

Police do have the powers, they also can do CPW/Ns etc but their resources are limited and frankly better spent targeting the drug dealers higher up the chain, and the OCGs and the criminals abusing children with county lines.

What SHOULD happen, is people stop smoking weed recognising its an nuisance and causing serious harm to the vulnerable. But sadly, weed smokers don't give a shit.

But don't point your anger at those with no legal powers or limited resources. Aim it at the criminals and brain dead weed smokers themselves.

Overthemoun · 31/03/2025 17:55

I can’t believe that no one will do anything. Why can’t they police illegal behaviour? So frustrating.

Sympathies - one of our neighbours is smoking weed too and it stinks but I’m not sure which.

It's not illegal to smoke it (unless you go on to drive) it's only illegal to possess it. Once it's smoked and gone, there is nothing actionable.

Again, police have been absolutely decimated and have minimal resources (sometimes a city with some 300,000 people may only have a handful of officers on duty, certainly not enough to target selfish weed smokers) and must instead target the dealers and up the chain.

Maybe people need to be better human beings and not fund criminals by buying it in the first place.

No one will care. Police don't come out for burglaries around here.

I didn't say they HAs did or didn't have legal powers.

If you read my post properly I said they don't give a tiny fart.

The HAs do bugger all around here for the people who live in their properties whether they have the power to or not.

And that's if they bother to ring you back or answer emails.

A cheap air purifier will reduce the smell quite a bit.
