Husband never takes photos - is this a common thing

Not sure if it’s just the pregnancy hormones but I woke up this morning feeling really upset that I didn’t get any photos of me and my 2 year old son yesterday on Mother’s Day, it would have been our last Mother’s Day just us before his baby sister comes along.
To be fair I didn’t ask for my husband to take photos, but me asking is the only way he will take any and sometimes I just feel I shouldn’t have to ask. I just get upset that my camera roll is full of photos of my husband and my son, I take them almost daily, and all mine are just selfies with my son because he doesn’t think to take any of me and my son together, the natural photos are always the best as well! 🥺

Is this just something that men aren’t good at in general? He tells me his brain isn’t wired that way and he doesn’t ever think to take photos, or is that just a poor excuse. I would love to know if this is the same for most.

I think it depends how keen you are on taking photographs. When I was growing up (long before digital cameras) my dad was a keen photographer with an SLR camera and would be taking pictures all day long on holidays and day trips, although rarely if ever around the house. I don't think my mum even owned a camera.

My husband and I are probably about equal - we'll take some photos on trips and occasions but not constantly snapping all day long. We have 'proper cameras' that we'll take if we are going somewhere specifically with photography in mind, but on other trips, sometimes we just want to enjoy the moment and appreciate it not through the screen of a phone or the lens of a camera.

I think OP needs to ask her husband to take photos if she wants them - yes, there might be a small loss of spontaneity, but saying "Can you take a picture of DS and me eating breakfast in bed' or whatever the moment is doesn't mean you have to break off and actively pose.

I've got hardly any of me and the kids when they were small, it does make me a bit sad. Selfies weren't really a thing then either.

As others have said the few I do have were taken by friends or are shite!

ThePoshUns · 31/03/2025 08:28

I often feel quite sad looking back at old photos and videos of my children because I’m in so few of them. If I wanted any photos of me I definitely had to ask for them. Make sure you do.

My husband does take some photos, but I always think that the ones I take of my son, I'm the on he's smiling at!

(Now what is funny is pictures my ILs take of us - my husband is front and centre of the ones with him and our son, whilst I am almost completely out of frame even if he's sitting in my lap...)

Yes very common. Sounds pathetic but I stopped taking photos of my DH and focused on the children.

My late husband was the photographer (mostly pre smart phones). I really regret that now, because after he died I realised that we had relatively few photos with him in.

this.

It’s another thing men don’t think about and if they remember one time they are “good husbands and not part of the problem”
this never ending task is just another small crumb of the mental load boulder women carry.

mine has I think cracked it as for 3 years I say “okay can you take a few of me please and WhatsApp them to me straight after so I actually get to see them and maybe print a couple

I honestly didn’t realise societal misogyny was such an issue until my first child had exited my body at which point I felt I was living in some sort of parallel universe.

Edited

What a ridiculous post. This is the kind of thing that gives Mumsnet a bad name.

This is NOT a man issue and it's quite ridiculous to lay it out as such.

Seriously, this attitude to life does my head in sometimes.

My kids and their families all came to mine yesterday. On the evening I got a bunch of photos of the day sent to me via WhatsApp. All from my son in law.

Growlybear83 · 31/03/2025 12:52

I don’t think my husband has ever taken a photo of me and my daughter without being asked. But it would never have occurred to me to take pictures on a day such as mothers’ day. I’ve never seen the need to have thousands of photos of anyone, and I’ve never posted a photo of a member of my family online in my life.

FuckityFux · 31/03/2025 12:52

If you want him to do something then ask. It’s really not fair to expect him to read your mind and what’s so hard about asking?

Not everyone loves taking or looking at photos. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t take many photos either. I have no wedding photos as I didn’t want any taking and I’ve no photos of me as a child although I think my brother might have some?

I’ve taken a few of DS growing up but I don’t think there are any with him and me together as I never do selfies. I can’t stand them. 😂

TrinityWaves · 31/03/2025 12:57

My DH never takes any photos of humans but he has about 5000 photos of our cat and other cats he sees on the street.

Iloveeverycat · 31/03/2025 13:16

Mine are in 20s now have never had a picture taken on Mother's day with kids.

Maitri108 · 31/03/2025 13:23

I never take photos and would need to be asked. My mum never took photos either.

LaurieFairyCake · 31/03/2025 16:26
