To think that people pretend not to understand obesity

After 30 plus years of failed diets I've recently started on mounjaro. Because I've placed an order and spent weeks searching stuff about weight loss medication, my Facebook feed is full of adverts from suppliers, many of which use vlogs from real clients who have lost weight. And the vast majority of comments are along the lines of, couldn't you just eat less, haven't you heard of exercise, why not just stop eating crap etc. Surely people are faking ignorance to have the fun of fat bashing. Obesity is rife! Everyone knows someone who struggles with their weight and who talks openly about it. I and every other obese person I know have tried every diet under the sun. Walk into any gym and you'll see a fair number of larger people trying bloody hard. And I know someone's going to reply to this post by talking about an obese friend who they once saw eating an entire packet of biscuits. Well numerous times I've given in to the overwhelming urge to do that too. And hated myself afterwards. It's part of the horrible condition. People have got eyes and ears and they seriously know full bloody well how hard obese people try to lose weight. They just pretend not to so they can have the fun of hating.

@MsRumpole

i believe @Winifredtabagohas spent a large proportion of today pretending to be interested in the complex reasons behind obesity to goad and regurgitate the ‘fat people are fat because on the whole, they are weak willed and lazy’ trope. Bless him/her!

I’m no longer engaging with him/her.

lots of other good convos on this thread xx

I have a friend who is an endocrinologist. We have talked a great deal about obesity as we both struggle with weight gain/losing weight. She told me that research suggests that obesity is an endocrinological disorder in that same way that diabetes is. Some people are just predisposed to gain weight and have issues losing it. Medication like Mounjaro etc is now available to combat this issue.

But the only thing the medication help with is to not feel hungry so you eat less and you lose weight. So it's not like diabetes at all, obesity can be "cured" by eating less. It's just an appetite problem (and ofcourse the psychological/emotional problems that make you overeat) so when the appetite is controlled thanks to medication you lose weight.

I know, I just had this crazy hope that @Winifredtabago was able to read sentences on the NHS website like "the causes of obesity are complex" or "the environment plays a role" or "genes play a role" but I think they're literally just pretending that it says stuff it doesn't say ☺️

This normalisation of being 'bigger' has also made buying clothes a nightmare now. I'd always be safe with a pair of 10 or 12 jeans, now I'm swamped in a size 12 and it's hit or miss with a size 10; not helped by me not liking skinny-fit because I prefer not to wear suction clothes filled with lycra.

10-12 were fine up to the end of the 90s and I can assure you I haven't lost weight or size since then.

What's 'nightmarish' about it? Anyone who was a size 10/12 in the 80s/90s knows they now need to buy a size 8 or 6 if their size hasn't changed. It's hardly a difficult thing to understand and remember, is it? And if its too 'hit and miss' just compare your measurements to those in the size guides.

You are both just in denial. It's that simple. That's a big part of the problem.

arcticpandas · 30/03/2025 21:13

ClawsandEffect · 30/03/2025 17:24

It isn't all about moderation though. I had to get down to below 700 calories a day to lose weight while in menopause which isn't sustainable long term. And even then, once I'd been doing that for a while, I was eventually unable to lose any weight. I did that for a year and a half with GP monitoring.

That isn't moderation. It's starvation.

Then you maybe didn't have to lose weight?

As evidenced by the fact you are ignoring the bulk of what that particular website says to just pick out the little bits that suit your narrative.

@5128gap I am horrified that you are refusing to engage with the unrelenting horror of having to adjust to buying 8/10 jeans instead of 10/12.

Do you not understand that this means that people who were a size 12/14 are now blatantly getting away with being a lower number?!

KnewYearKnewMe · 30/03/2025 21:14

No, lovie, I literally cut and pasted what it says and it does not say anything like what you've been saying about cravings or willpower.

No. Why don't you do some work instead of hanging around here trying to make people with a condition that you don't understand or care about feel miserable for your own entertainment? Go and find an actual quote that supports what you have been saying about people being obese because they're not trying hard enough. You won't, because there isn't one, because unlike you the NHS actually does understand the complexity of obesity and isn't in the business of shaming people who are not like you for a problem that willpower won't permanently solve for them.

🤦‍♀️ and this is why I'm guessing you are either overweight or unhappy with your weight.

The whole of the NHS website on obesity. I dont know why I have to keep repeating myself that I acknowledge there are some obese people with medical conditions that cause obesity. But your in denial if you dont realise the bulk of the problem.

Then you miss the point altogether. Why can't people say they are now a 16-24 size in Jeans rather than traditionally normal sized people learn that they are now a size 6-8 to keep the abnormally-sized happy.

OOh, I can guess this - the larger-sized people are now the norm and they buy clothes and business makes more money. So why are so many larger sized people not very happy with their size and resort to MJ then?

When consumerism first really took off in the early 2000's and shopping became entertainment rather than a necessity I used to comment on how the clothes manufacturers still charged the same price for mini skirts (less fabric) and below-navel jeans with no waists (less effort).

We are all slaves.......

If you keep repeating incomprehensible nonsense, people are going to keep not understanding it. What I cut and pasted was the whole of the section on causes of obesity. It talks about genes, environment, biology and medical causes. It does not cite a lack of willpower. I really don't understand what you mean by "the whole of the NHS website on obesity" if it's not the section that I posted.

You're right. My reply lacked empathy. Full disclosure - I was a little triggered as I too have to buy a smaller size than I did in the 80s, and when I was first faced with the realisation that the clothes that fit my body are now labelled with A DIFFERENT NUMBER than they were 30 years ago, I was shaken. To put it mildly. But (with work) I managed to come to acceptance and developed the workaround of simply buying the size with my new number. However I accept not everyone is as resilient as me.

You copied a few words. You missed out the many paragraphs detailing the reasons. Obesity being a complex problem is an overview. It means it's not just caused by one issue alone. They cant possibly produce that website and not acknowledge all the potential causes can they! But it's very obvious by the topics that dominate and appear first what the most common causes are. It's the same as reasons for headaches. They don't put brain tumors first for obvious reasons.

Then free yourself. There is no rational reason for you to be upset by the number the clothing trade uses to denote the size that fits your body. You are the size you are, and there are clothes available in a size to fit your body. Whether that size is called 12, 8 or 47 and three quarters, as long as you know the number being used, you're good to go.

That's poor, even by the standards you have exhibited on this thread.
