Been told to take this to help with my depression, we have had a horrendous 12 months, father dying, finding our youngest brother had stolen over a 100k from his over 6 years.
Having to sort out the will probate etc brother in law died suddenly.
Friend fell over and smashed into a bollard now in hospital with serious head and neck injuries.
You can understand why I am down, neck back legs everything was aching, Dr thinks it's stress, so gave me sertaline 50mg,i am on my 6th day but haven't taken The sixth tablet yet, my question is does this get better? At the moment I feel dreadful, no energy tired nauseous, aching and miserable, please tell me it gets better or not sure whether to take the next tablet.
As an aside its wife's birthday today, lovely kind girl married 43 years, I feel so bad feeling like this on her birthday.

Hi, it does get better yes. It can take a few weeks to kick in. I've been on it for just over a year 50mg. It sounds like you've been through a really tough time. Try to find time for you also alongside treatment, walking, getting out in the fresh air or whatever makes you happy. Get lots of rest. Sometimes we need a reset both mentally and physically and time to recharge. I'm sure your wife understands.

MuseumOfIdiots · 29/03/2025 12:01

Sorry you're going through a tough time. I've been on and off Sertraline for a few years now. Yes, it does get better. It can take a few weeks for the effect to kick in. It can also make you feel worse, mentally and physically, during those few weeks, but stick with it.

But it helps. I find it takes the edge of things just enough so I can concentrate on other things that can help, such as CBT techniques and self-care.

But if you're really struggling with it, speak to your GP. Sometimes dosages and medicines need to be tweaked to get the best fit.

Wishing you all the best.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 29/03/2025 12:03

Yes - they check in on you after two weeks for this reason, it can be grim to start.,

GPs often recommend you do half a tablet for a week for this reason, so do feed back your dodgy symptoms and suggest they do this.

It’s an effective drug so should start helping you get your head above water soon. I hope things also improve in your life, it can be such a shit storm can’t it.

Bourbonbonbon · 29/03/2025 12:04

I had agonising stomach cramps and diarrhoea for the first few days. Unfortunately feeling more anxious, jittery, less able to sleep and increased suicidal ideation is par for the course for the first few weeks. It's not an indication of how things will be in a little while.

Pomegranatecarnage · 29/03/2025 12:06

That’s a really high dose to start suddenly. I’m on 10mg and it just takes the edge off. It takes about 2-3 weeks to feel the benefit.

Gosh thanks for getting back to me so quickly, if I had actually written down all that had happened to us over the last 12 months I don't think there would have been enough characters, I think having shingles in January has really knocked me about more than I realised.
Thank you for your kind words and advice it means an awful lot.

So sorry to hear you’re having such a bad time. I took this for several months last year when life was feeling incredibly unmanageable and it really does help (so much so that I’m back off it now). I had similar side effects at the start but they didn’t last long and were worth it in the long run. I also found it easy to come off by gradually reducing the dosage over a few weeks. Just use this time to take the pressure off and be kind to yourself. Wishing you all the best OP.

PicaK · 29/03/2025 12:12

It's usually 2 weeks to get the dosage up in your system. Hang on in there because the relief when you get you back is worth it. In the meantime, extreme tlc fir yourself. Take it easy.
Thank your wife and when you're better treat her to your full time and attention

Sertraline doesnt exist in a 10mg tablet, do you mean citalopram cause that's a different medication and do the doses will be different.

OP it takes 4-6weeks for sertraline to become effective, keep taking it and be aware you can often feel worse when you start taking it but push through for a few weeks and you will see a difference.

I take 50mg and that’s described as a starter dose.

@Kevin1958 Im on the exact same dose at the moment, started taking in January due to burning out and having horrific anxiety - similar to you, a succession of bad things happening that just piled up on top of each other and then was really REALLY poorly over Christmas which was the straw that broke the camels back.

Sounds like a similar thing has happened with you. It took me two weeks for the meds to settle and then it was like magic - my anxiety lifted and I was able to cope better. I took 6 weeks off work and have also had some therapy which has really helped.

Id recommend taking each day as it comes. I downloaded the calm app to do some meditation and mindfulness stuff which really helped, and tried to get outside in the fresh air every day.

Good luck, you will feel better I promise

I felt like I was going mad the first week of taking sertraline, weirdest feeling. But it does settle and then you feel the benefit after a few weeks. Hang in there.

Greenlittecat · 29/03/2025 13:06

Sertraline gave me my life back. Hang in there through the side effects, they don't last forever ❤️

Sunflowerintherain · 29/03/2025 13:09

It took about a month for me to notice a difference, I had terrible headaches while it settled. I take it in the morning after I've ate, that works well for me.

Snooks1971 · 29/03/2025 13:10

OP, echoing the others and say just hang on in there. Take each day as it comes - at the end of the day say to yourself “that’s another day done towards feeling better”.

One day SOON you will wake up and feel like a weight has lifted (my experience anyway).

DH was also diagnosed with depression after a major op and his father dying around the same time a few years ago. He too felt rough for a couple of weeks but luckily I knew he would get through it and he did. Now he’s a huge advocate for seeking help and taking medication (if it’s appropriate).

One last thing, I don’t mean to sound patronising but well done for seeking help. Many men traditionally don’t and so I applaud you. All the best!

Kevin1958 · 29/03/2025 13:13

I will let you into a secret my wife made the appointment she told me it was for her, then they called my name and and She smiled and said it was the only way to get you here, I do love her so much.

GrandmasCat · 29/03/2025 13:13

It didn’t get better for me. I stopped sleeping completely and although it was prescribed to deal with moderate anxiety, by the time I decided to stop against my doctor wishes, 5 weeks on, I had regular suicidal thoughts. I am convinced that if I had continued on it, I wouldn’t be around anymore.

This is not only an appreciation of mine, search zoloft (sertraline) and suicide, it is well documented. This does NOT mean, however, that you will be in the small minority that react badly to it.

No medication is safe for absolutely everyone, I would say try for a few weeks but if you feel it is making you feel much worse, trust your instincts and ask to be changed to another medication.

Snooks1971 · 29/03/2025 13:15

Oh wow your wife is amazing!!!!!!

Sunshinedayscomeon · 29/03/2025 13:29

It will get better, sertaline gave me my life back. I too had suicidal thoughts but they pass. Life, will get better -as it can't always be shit. I take mine at night before sleeping.

Happy Birthday to your wife.

Sertraline doesn’t come in 10mg tablets, the lowest available is 25mg
