Everyone’s raving about it

I don’t even have a Netflix account atm

I’m a year younger than Stephen Graham’s character and my son is a year younger than the lad. I found it to be an amazing and very emotional piece of drama, couldn’t take my eyes off it. If you have teenagers you should definitely watch it. The episode set in the school was very well done, as was the episode with the psychologist.

Springhassprungthesunisout · 27/03/2025 08:23

There's obviously a whole parallel universe that's grown up on the internet since my schooldays, and I had little appreciation of the depth of online bullying by the children and their need to feel validated. We watched it with teenage nephews and it opened up good discussions. It was good to hear their view.

Kindling1970 · 27/03/2025 08:25

I thought it was one of the best tv shows I’ve ever seen but guess I’m in the minority here. I thought the one take shot was wonderful as it forced the viewer to really
engage and you couldn’t look away (scroll on phone). I found it refreshing as so many tv shows as the MTV approach of constant quick cuts to keep us engaged. I was absorbed throughout.

i read it as Jamie thinking he was justified in the killing as she was mean to him rather than the writers thinking that. The whole point was fragile masculinity acting with violence when a woman laughs at them.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/03/2025 08:25

Yes, my daughter is watching it in school transition year.
My only criticism is that it would have been good to see the devastating impact on the girls family.
I think the message of consequences could have been harsher.

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 27/03/2025 08:25

One thing that is still bugging me. When the lads on the bike rode past the house after the paint incident, how on earth did they end up at the DIY store too? Firstly how did they get there so quickly on bikes, and also was it supposed to be a massive coincidence? Or have I got it all wrong?
(Am aware this is not a vital part of the show to be worrying about)

BelloItalia · 27/03/2025 08:28

It’s very very good in parts but very very boring in others.

Episode one and 3 was amazing, episode 2 and 4 were very boring. Lots of walking around, driving and irrelevant small talk - probably because it was all done in one take.

I watched episode one again yesterday and I reckon I fast forwarded at least half of it to skip the walking around and small talk.

still worth watching though

OiBonita · 27/03/2025 08:33

The media did a really good job of hyping this up, to the point we all had to tune in and watch it! Only to wonder what on earth all the excitement was about and be so disappointed by how mediocre it turned out to be, but by then the ratings are through the roof and supposedly the most watched Netflix series, even though I’m sure like myself, many didnt enjoy it or only watched 2 episodes.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/03/2025 08:39

My take from the show is, Jamie was radicalised online as are so many of his peers and the parents have no idea.

I listened to an investigation podcast on the incel Community in Ireland and online, it is horrendous.

It is a huge problem

They had followed him, but not very realistic.

DustyLee123 · 27/03/2025 08:46

I was disappointed to see that the parent’s counsellor told them it wasn’t their fault, yet the parents worked out that they did have a hand in it.
And I think the relationship between the dad (that has anger problems) and the mum ( that stays and does nothing about it) is very telling.

Coffeeishot · 27/03/2025 08:49

If people found it dull as dishwasher why did you finish watching it ?

UnPetitCochon · 27/03/2025 08:49

It was good. But it wasn’t anything I didn’t already know about so I wasn’t wowed or shocked by it.

I did find the last episode really slow, so I forwarded it 30 seconds every now and then.

Hazeby · 27/03/2025 08:50

Twinstudy · 27/03/2025 07:49

Oh well she was asking for it then 🙄

That’s what I said is it?

SantaToSSD · 27/03/2025 08:51

Definitely not in itself worth getting Netflix for. I found it rather boring and couldn't quite see what the hype was all about. I found the filming each episode in one continuous shot a bit irritating too. It means there are long pointless bits, eg characters sitting in a car saying nothing, doing nothing. It made the whole thing seem less sharp and concentrated for my liking.

Myengagementring · 27/03/2025 08:55

I have watched 3 episodes and am really enjoying it. In my opinion it is filmed very well, I like the one shot take on it. The main actor is amazing and it was his first acting job! The message it is portraying in my opinion isn't just about misogyny or bullying but about social media and how it influences young minds and also for adults being aware of what children are doing on their phones. It has sparked up conversations with my mum friends and it was startling that some have no idea what their kids are doing or accessing on their phones, our children are 12 going on 13 later in the year. It's also hit quite hard in my area as we are not too far from Sheffield where the filmed the school scenes and coincidentally a young boy was stabbed to death at school and locally it has been said the victim was actually bullying the accused although nothing has been proven and there is no excuse what so ever, but its hit harder because that's so fresh. Is it good....yes. Would I join Netflix just to watch it...no

My 14yo daughter wanted to watch it with me. She enjoyed it. I think the topic is an important one and it has sparked some important conversations so I wanted to watch the whole thing from that point of view.

Ah ok that's fair, just if I wasn't enjoying something I'd not bother with further episodes.

I disagree with blaming the parents, none are perfect, I also think that it can happen to anyone.

A similar real life murder happened in Dublin in 2020. Two 14 y.o boys from MC families, well educated, Boy A and boy B.

A beautiful girl Ana, who had a crush on a popular boy A, he wasn't happy about it, Boy A and Boy B lead Ana to a disused property, Boy A killed her, boy B was a lookout.

The disturbing porn found on their devices, snuff videos too, these lads were radicalised with a hate for girls at 14.

AncientBallerina · 27/03/2025 09:14

I think there was a huge amount of noise but that it didn’t really get into the nitty gritty of what these young people are actually seeing online. Like there was too much focus on one thing - the emojis - but not enough on the influence of Andrew Tate et al - it was more implied in the scene with the psychologist. The last episode was torturously boring - and the only interesting thing - his decision about his plea was glossed over. It would have been much more interesting to see the process by which he came to that decision rather than spend an hour wishing they ‘d all blow their noses!

I grew up in a middle class, well educated family that was also as dysfunctional and abusive as f**k

No she wasn't. That was a huge leap Ashley Walters' character jumped to.

She was coerced (by the boys) into sending topless pics - misogyny. Of course she'd be labelled uptight or frigid if she didn't - misogyny. One of the boys shared the pics (misogyny). She was then ostracised by both boys and girls for being a 'slut' - misogyny. Then Jamie targeted her as she was at a low point and figured she'd now give him a chance because she was weak and vulnerable - misogyny. She stood up for herself - online and then in person. How dare she? - misogyny. Jamie killed her because of his rage at her perceived 'disrespect'. In his mind she was damaged goods now, she should be grateful for any male attention - misogyny.

PP is right - too many viewers have missed the point.

Exactly right 👆 The girl wasn't bullying him, she was sticking up for herself. Even if she did hurt his feelings, it's a massive over reaction to stab her to death.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/03/2025 09:24

@CalmingInfluence I understand abuse happens in MC families, this wasn't the case, these parents were horrified, had strong connections to the community.

These were confident lads, top of the popular league at friendships, sports, academically, he did not want a nerd fancying him.

They lied for days, leaving her body to rot.
Boy A was highly intelligent, boy B admitted they planned the murder with their kill kit, including masks.

The abuse these lads received was online.

Smallmercies · 27/03/2025 07:31

I enjoyed the first episode, but found the rest increasingly annoying. And I found most of the acting irritating (the boy was v good). Stephen Graham only seems to have one acting mode. Overall I was very disappointed. Lots of storylines were set up only to be instantly dropped, and the drama couldn't make its mind up whether the problem was the boy's misogyny or the girl's bullying or both.

Edited

I'm laughing over 'one mode graham' . Is that the permanently anguished look he has?
