To think that most “foodies” are just using their diet to mask deep insecurity about their personality?

If your personality is just your next meal, maybe you need to look in the mirror and realise you have nothing else to offer.

Surely you could say this about literally any person with any hobby. This "making XYZ their whole personality" insult that the internet currently loves is so bitchy. Just let people enjoy things.

Literally this 😂😂😂

one person finds passion in nutrition, someone else in fitness, another in crochet. If you see someone who loves tennis, always talk about tennis and post photos of them playing tennis on SM, is that an identity crisis?

or are you just shaming that one poor friend who struggles with their body image who looks for encouragement through documenting their diet? Bit shit really, just let people enjoy what they enjoy

Who’s rattled your cage OP?

Seriously… who?

Happyinarcon · 24/03/2025 21:50

I’m in the process of adopting a home made bone broth personality. I even bought mason jars.

I might have an hard boiled egg. One that's been left a bit so that the yolk is surrounded by grey. I probably won't manage to get the shell off smoothly, it will end up resembling a white shiny hand grenade. It will explode in my stomach just as I have fallen asleep. I shall rise above the bed due to my eggy murmerings being unleashed from within.

Then, and only then, I shall congratulate myself and feel smug.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/03/2025 21:53

It's no different from any other enthusiastic interest or hobby which people incessantly talk about though, is it?

No I haven’t, I like the people I hang out with. Why are you friends with people you obviously don’t like?!!!

I wouldn’t say ‘friends’ - more like people I’ve encountered. But fair play, maybe I should take your advice and expand my social circle!

I have more of a Creme Egg personality, I fear.

Good luck with that 🤔

I use mason jars in my sourdough personality!

AI responses from the OP I reckon, don’t waste your time 😂

What does this mean? 😆

I think it means the OP is a sour dough, aspiring to be a vegan hot cross bun.

MoonriseKingdom · 24/03/2025 22:41

Is this about Nigel Slater? 😉

If the shoe fits! But hey, at least you’re self-aware - most people I’m talking about take themselves way too seriously. And no drinks involved, just an observation!

I was only half serious. And hopefully I don’t impose it on others. Apart from my DP who is also one. I do love food and think about it a lot.

Are you one of those “food is just fuel and I often forget to eat” types because to me that’s even more tedious than foodies.

EdinburghTimezone · 24/03/2025 22:43

I don't recognise this behaviour in anyone I know. Perhaps you have a rather constricted circle of friends.

RampantIvy · 24/03/2025 22:45

I have just made my lunch for tomorrow.

What does that make me? 😁

I think my food identity personality is left overs.

😢

FiveTreeHill · 24/03/2025 22:52

I think people just do this when they don't know what to say to you tbh

If someone's a bit dry of conversation eventually you just start wittering on about whats for tea

MerryTealHedgehog · 24/03/2025 22:55

Im really really into cooking tho. Ingredients and flavours and trends are my life.

SapphOhNo · 24/03/2025 22:56

Maybe you have nothing to offer other than this post?

Let people enjoy things.

PlasticBags · 24/03/2025 22:57

ByMellowJoker · 24/03/2025 21:39

Of course! But I’m talking about the people whose entire personality revolves around what they’re eating next. It’s less of an interest and more of an identity crisis.

I know a lot of foodies, but I’ve never met anyone remotely like this.

Maitri108 · 24/03/2025 22:57

That’s an interesting take. Some people definitely use their food preferences or foodie identity as a way to shape their personality, especially if they feel they lack other defining traits. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing—people do this with music, fashion, or even their job.

At the same time, plenty of food lovers are just genuinely passionate about flavors, cooking, and the cultural aspects of cuisine. It’s only a problem if someone is using it as their only personality trait or as a way to avoid addressing deeper insecurities.

Are you noticing this in someone specific, or just thinking about it in general?😏

MerryTealHedgehog · 24/03/2025 22:58

my Mumsnet adverts are an expensive pasta brand. My heaven is a delicatessen or some wild mushrooms.

LongDarkTeatime · 24/03/2025 23:07

Which paper do you work for OP?
How about doing a nice story about a local charity instead?

PlasticBags · 24/03/2025 23:08

ByMellowJoker · 24/03/2025 21:47

Of course people can like food and have personalities! I’m talking about those whose entire identity seems to revolve around what they eat - like the ones who constantly narrate their meals as if it’s a life philosophy. There’s a difference between enjoying food and making ‘being a foodie’ your entire personality.

Maybe they’re countering you droning on about the Arsenal defence/ Eastenders/ how you found God?

Maybe they leave conversations with you and phone their friends saying ‘I think I just talked for a half hour non-stop about truffles because I was afraid she was going to interrupt me and tell me Jesus really loves me…’
