To think the world is a bloody awful place?

I've heard a few stories about animals getting abused recently, how animals in some countries are treated so awfully and I can't stop thinking about it. The same with people. People abusing other people. The world is a horrible place and a lot of people are just desperately horrible.

In fact, sometimes the state of the world and it's people makes me feel like I don't want to be here. I'm not going to harm myself though but still.

Yes there are some awful things happening but there are lots of wonderful things too.

In my job I meet around 30 people per day for around 10 mins. In that time I chat to some real lovely characters.

The world is full of caring, lovely people. Most people are in fact decent at heart. Most of what goes on day to day is just normal people doing their best and getting on with life as best they can.

The world is full of beauty. Look at the daffodils and crocus. Look at the blossom on the trees. Look at the sky. Look at all the little birds currently making their nests. Yes I sound like a loony... But these things always cheer me.

Focus on the quiet, kind people who make up the majority. Look at those who hold the door open for you, those who flash you to let you in in traffic. (There are people who do much nicer, charitable things but these are just examples of things that happen every day!) Don't get distracted by the awful things because there is so much good. There will always be bad eggs. Let the law deal with them and don't give them the bandwidth.

Yanbu

Just saw a thread with an article blaming non breastfeeding women for their children's autism 🙄

Ddakji · 24/03/2025 21:06

You have to remember that the world has always been like this, you just didn’t know because the internet wasn’t telling you so every 5 minutes.

Remember that here in the UK we are known as animal lovers for a reason.

The best thing you can do is curate your social media carefully. Remove the bad, keep the good, the inspiring, the positive.

I’ve lived in a few countries and travelled in many more (over 40) and I have met people as diverse as you can find. There are some glowing things across the globe. Most people care about their neighbours, their children and the world around them. Humans are cooperative animals by nature.

Trauma, fear, divisive crap can mutate us, but give people the chance and they are almost always good. Believing people are good makes people better. Look for the helpers.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 24/03/2025 21:13

Don't forget that the mainstream news is always full of doom and gloom. That's why, if you're diagnosed with anxiety and depression, the doctors tend to advise you to stop watching/reading the news, because it makes you feel worse.

Also, in the UK, we seem to be very quick to criticise and never fast enough to praise.

Try to remember to look for the little joys in life, OP, like the daffodils that are starting to flower, or that your dog/cat/pet was very happy when you did X with them today, or that something went well for you.

XenoBitch · 24/03/2025 21:13

This stuff has always happened but when it does happen, we now have it told to us 24/7.
Gone are the days you could be out when the news was on, and just live in blissful ignorance. Now news is in your face all the time.

StarDolphins · 24/03/2025 21:18

I feel the same op. Humans treat animals in the most disgusting way. It seems to get worse every day. It’s very upsetting.

farmlife2 · 24/03/2025 21:22

I hate how humans treat animals. I just do my bit to look after the ones I come across.

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 24/03/2025 21:24

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it...

YANBU.

Orangeoranges42 · 24/03/2025 21:31

It can be overwhelming, I think we’ve just got to focus on doing our own bit of good and kindness to others .

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 24/03/2025 22:07

I know what you mean. I hate stories of animal cruelty it breaks my heart.

But there are more good people than bad.
A bad person dumped my kitten and his 4 siblings on a cold December day in 2023.
They were 4 weeks old. It was an isolated country lane. If I think of it I get tearful.

BUT a good person walking their dog found the box of kittens and the police took them to the station and got a vet and looked after them.

All were rehomed to police families (my dd is a police call handler) and so we have a lovely black cat who is adorable and friendly and has made Friends with my older cat.

Good people outnumber the bad. I have had help from total strangers in the past. Once my old fiesta broke down years ago and 3 schoolboys helped by pushing it off the road for me.

On the train I have helped a mum with 2 young kids who was struggling.

Most people are nice.

Most news is horrible.

I avoid it.

Glitchymn1 · 24/03/2025 22:11

YANBU OP. I feel the same.

Guinessandafire · 24/03/2025 22:13

You've just noticed?

Yeah..People have shown their true colours all over the world in the last 10 years.

Rise of the far right in every corner of the world

The rejection of science and trained, educated experts

General selfishness

What a time to be alive!

Stripeyanddotty · 24/03/2025 22:17

I have just read about the 4 alpacas shot dead in their field in Cambridgeshire, a 5th one still alive but suffered a gunshot wound to its face. Who the fuck would do that!!😡

LoztWorld · 24/03/2025 22:23

I think most people are basically decent but can do some unkind or selfish things depending on circumstances; a small handful are exceptionally good, thoughtful, principled and and selfless; and a small handful again are absolute raging evil bastards.

The latter category unfortunately has outsized influence on everyone else’s experience.

But there is a lot of loveliness and beauty in the world that has nothing to do with people at all.

AliBaliBee1234 · 24/03/2025 22:29

We always just here the bad so it makes you forget the good things/people.

I hate how some humans treat animals, i hate that it doesn't seem to improve as it should and I hate how little people seem to care.

Sux2buthen · 24/03/2025 22:41

I sometimes feel a bit down about things but weirdly, last weekend I was present (unfortunately) when an accident occurred while I was out with my kids. I was first to react and ran to help, two cars pulled over and men got out to help followed by another man, an ice cream van and two women. Together we were able to support the injured man and keep him company until he was taken off in an ambulance.
I was really moved by everyone that flew to help and it was a nice reminder that most people are basically good. They just don’t make the news.

Coconutter24 · 25/03/2025 06:57

It’s sad that out of the two types of abuse people are commenting on the animal abuse over the abuse of people!! No person or animal should be abused but the fact we jump to animal abuse is so cruel etc (which of course it is!) yet no mention of how cruel it is that we have people out there having the worse possible things done to them.

The world is a beautiful place, it’s some of the people in in that’s the problem

Agree - and your job sounds interesting!

PoppyFleur · 25/03/2025 07:26

Yes there are awful people in this world but they are far outnumbered by the silent majority of good, decent and kind people.

In my lifetime I have come across many people who have done wonderful things for strangers. In Great Britain, we have a bone marrow donor list full of people that are willing to donate to save the life of a stranger.

Up and down the country, people donate blood regularly to save the lives of strangers. These donors never question the colour of the recipient’s skin, their ethnicity or religion - donors give purely to save the life of another.

Lastly, every day, several people receive a life changing organ transplant, either from a living donor or from someone who actively chose to give the ultimate gift.

This world really is full of good people, it’s just that bad news sells quicker and spreads faster.

LollyLand · 25/03/2025 07:31

I feel I can’t go out without seeing unpleasant people.

On the bus last week there was a lovely little boy with Down syndrome. Two crack heads got on and started comparing him to their child who had fetal alcohol syndrome.

lucysnowe2 · 25/03/2025 07:32

Look for the helpers op! And you can be one of them, donate to an animal charity for eg. Personally whenever I feel bad about the world, I look at the graph that measures the decrease in infant mortality over the last few centuries. It's a brilliant achievement for humanity.

I think It’s a symptom of there being far too many people on the planet, living cheek by jowl creating a feeling of having to fight for space and resources I think. It makes people behave in a horrible self centred way.
Don't know what the answer is, apart from some pretty drastic depopulation!
