Look, I’m not a Luddite- I usually love technology.

But why oh why have headphones jacks been removed from phones and tablets? I don’t want Bluetooth headphones or earbuds that I have to worry about charging before I go anywhere and that cost a zillion dollars. I want cheap old fashioned headphones that don’t go flat that can be plugged into your device and just work. I don’t want to use the charging port for headphones- I like to charge my device while using it. I want headphone jacks back.

YANBU- some things were not broken and should have been left alone

Parking (and EV charging) apps. Why do I have to give up so much personal information just to park my car for 30 minutes?

strangeandfamiliar · 24/03/2025 08:10

Also hate those capsule coffee machines. All that noise, fuss and landfill waste for a thimbleful of indifferent coffee.

Unfortunately tech is being used against us now. The big question about whatever form of tech used for any purpose is ‘who controls it and why’. It’s being pushed solely to make the rich richer and look good, with no thought for any social consequence whatsoever. Restraints have gone. Democratic thinking has gone. Even the basic idea of asking all consumers what they want has gone.

The public institutions that used to be able to get serious discussion shouted at those in charge have all gone. Even practical considerations of security have gone, there are as a pp says serious vulnerabilities in the internet of all things.

The reduction of decent news, now that the libraries have gone too, and the forcing of tech onto schoolkids particularly get my goat. God knows what the future holds.

This. And if you try and discuss it you do just get treated like Nancy the Negative dinosaur.

Everything is held to ransom by technology, and we're almost engineering our own obsolescence.

Data is just about the worlds most valuable resource, so if there are infrastructure failures (or attacks) the knock on effects are potentially catastrophic. Theoretically it could cause economic collapse. Not to mention the surveillance.

We were all lured in via entertainment and shopping, and perhaps it is the law of unintended consequence, but things are completely out of hand. See China's Social Credit system for where this could go. And it's much admired by some people in power in the West.

Today it's the irritation of constant "upgrades" to just live in the modern world. Tomorrow - who knows?

Apparently car manufacturers are reviewing touch screens in cars because they're more distracting and dangerous than good old knobs and buttons that you can do without looking.

Good! DH and I have had this conversation.

I also hate displays on the windscreen. We had one in a courtesy car and it drove us both mad.

Unless you have a phone that you can charge wirelessly honestly the cure is worse than the disease at this point 😂

I can't use ear buds because my earholes are too small. This pisses me right off.

I am the same. I ended up using bone headphones. What did you find works for you?
(Sorry for derail)

@CrocsNotDocs for me its soundproof headphones. Drives me insane I cannot rouse anyone in my house. They are all closed in their little bubble of soubdproofness.. thank heavens for the dog

Digital landlines.

We've not got one yet but havehad letters telling us we will be upgraded soon.

Rang a person to ask to be delayed.
Told them we have very poor mobile signal and want and use a traditional landline and plug a traditional corded phone in during our frequent power cuts.

Went round in circles. Yes most of the time I can make WiFi calls on my mobile. But not in a power cut. Yes power cuts might be rare for you but not us. No I can't just use my mobile in a power cut. At least not without standing at the exact right corner of my.bedroom and waving it out the window. Ok and how am I supposed to ring the emergency services in in a power cut then? No we've talked about mobile service......

I like traditional landlines and I want to keep mine!

When we have powercuts, the mobile phone mast on the hill stops working too!

Sadly we are now digital on our phone. Which is hilarious as the WiFi still comes down a copper line from the exchange two miles away. And when a tree falls on it, it's four days to get WiFi back.

Thats why I LOVED LG phones. But they bloody stopped making phones. So my LG V60 is the last phone I may have with a headphone jack it is 4 years old and I want to keep it a live for as long as possible.

My DH just upgraded from the phone he loved as they stopped security updates and whatsapp withdrew support. I think that is awful. A lot of old phones were built to last and are fantastic. But they are forcing us to change and become mass consumers and wasteful.
We don't need fancy cameras and apps as I use my DSLR for photography. But I do use Music app, Newpipe, duck duck go, Fdroid and Whatsapp. Everything else is pretty useless to me. Headphone jacks are amazing!

There is just too much choice in general.
Helping my dad choose a bathroom suite. Why are there eleventy billion almost identical sinks and baths and toilets? The marketing blurb banging on about subtle curves and things.

This-we are doing the same. Currently there are 4 phone book size glossy brochures in our lounge with just about the same shite in. I just want to go to a showroom and go “that one please”

Hardtotalkt · 24/03/2025 08:18

Strawberries. Haven’t had a good one for years. Just bright red water flouted squishes.

MinkyWales · 24/03/2025 08:19

There is no reason at all why Apple could not have made the headphone jack waterproof, by the way.

Touchscreen cookers- give me a damn dial!

Or touch screens in cars which means I can’t turn the temp up or down without pulling over so I can look at the damn touchscreen. I’m sure if I could be bothered to work it out I’d be able to use a voice command but I was fine with the knob I could turn without looking at it.

With you all the way OP!

I hate keyless ignition in cars these days. My car key battery keeps seeming to run low and the bloomin car won't start first time, it's so annoying. Plus if my key is in the ignition I know where it is.
I see no benefit to keyless ignition, what is the point?

Pur car key has the best of both worlds. Keyless ignition (using a simple switch), which is great on icy mornings so no blundering about with gloves on. But also a key folded into it, so if the battery dies, you can still get into the car and turn it on.

The car is 14 though. And it won't play podcasts off my new phone which really pisses me off.

My iPad is due to be upgraded but I am dreading losing my headphone jack.

Stop buying Apple products. They are notorious for this shit and their devices do not play well with other brands. If you stop using Apple, you actually have more choice and more freedom.

Lovemycat2023 · 24/03/2025 08:27

Prob not the point but I have a pair of plug in earphones for my iPhone, just have a lightening jack instead.

You can get a little adapter so you can still use your old headphones but it’s still an arse than you can’t charge at the same time.

My dad got a new car a couple of years ago and he hates it for this reason. He's going back to knobs and levers, and will take the financial hit.

RabbitsRock · 24/03/2025 08:30

Self service tills - I don’t know how staff have the patience to work with them. Which brings me to another point - that they still need staff around because they’re always going wrong! I’m usually a calm person & have a long fuse but by God, those things enrage me! Don’t get me started on “ Unexpected item in bagging area”! 😡🤬😡🤣🤣🤣

BoldAmberDuck · 24/03/2025 08:30

Digital display microwave oven. Everyone I know just presses extra 30 seconds at a time to get to right time.no one wants to faff around setting it properly

retirementislooming · 24/03/2025 08:32

Op, all you need is this cable. One end goes into your headphones, the other end goes into your phone or Ipad (into the hole where the charger usually goes). This can be used with phones with no jack. My DH bought me bluetooth headphones, but I returned them. Mostly, when I listen to music on my phone, it's not pre-planned and I've had a few wines. Chances are the headphones wouldn't be charged, and that would be shit. I like my old fashioned "always ready" headphones.

DP loves his but they don't replace a kettle. Hotel Indigo has them in their rooms and thinks you can make a cup of tea with the 'hot water' button on the fkn coffee machine!! It's a faff to decipher how to fill and operate it, and the resulting tea is vile as it's off the boil.

TheignT · 24/03/2025 08:34

Oh yes. My family think I'm mad and are convinced I'm just being awkward but I can't use them.
