Sunday dinner/lunch- is it a thing?

Whether you do a roast or something else, is the main Sunday meal something a bit special in your home, or a pretty ordinary rotation?

IABU= ordinary meal that you might have any day of the week
IANBU= a slightly special meal or something you don’t have in the week

We always have a big fry up around lunchtime on a Sunday then go out for a walk or to the park we then have sandwiches etc at teatime. I make a roast on a Monday.

tattychicken · 23/03/2025 19:41

We try to make more of an effort on a Sunday, just because it's about the only day we are all together at the same time. Doesn't always happen but a roast prob 2-3 times a month in winter. In summer more often a BBQ, or roast chicken with salad etc. Nothing formal but laying the table properly, napkins, all together around the table. Rather than mid week spag bol for half the family as the other half are at training etc.

tillyandmilly · 23/03/2025 19:43

Don’t each much Sunday - possibly soup and toast - day off from cooking!

CharlotteCChapel · 23/03/2025 19:45

We have a roast most weeks but as I'm not too fond of them we do ther things. Tonight we're having beef stew with roast potatoes and vegetables

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 23/03/2025 19:47

I think that it should be a nice thing

But dd had mcdonalds and a small bag of jelly beans and I had some left over rice and we ate it Watching tv 🙈🙈

I will get it together next week and do a nice Sunday lunch

TheChosenTwo · 23/03/2025 19:47

Most weeks we have a roast on Sunday, evening meal though not at lunchtime.
It’s a family favourite, rib of beef, cauli cheese and parmesan parsnips, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, carrots, cabbage and gravy tonight. Can’t wait, feeling hungry now!

ThejoyofNC · 23/03/2025 19:49

Sunday dinner every week here unless we're out, a roast unless it's too hot.

Xmasbaby11 · 23/03/2025 19:51

Sunday roast about every other week, other weeks something that takes a while like lasagne or a pie.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 23/03/2025 19:52

Yup. Sunday roast at 1pm sharp every week. We started when our DDs were small and DHs long commute meant that we could never eat together during the week. If one of us is out, we move it to the evening but we all try quite hard to be here. We rotate through chicken, beef, pork and lamb. Each one has it’s own set of side dishes. We’ve been doing this for almost 20 years and, writing it down, I think it makes us sound a bit mad. We are definitely creatures of habit!

TeapotTitties · 23/03/2025 19:53

DH has cooked a roast almost every Sunday for the last 23 years and it's still our favourite meal of the week!

So it's special to us and our 3 adult DS who always invite their girlfriends for Sunday dinner.

Yes ours depends on whether I have time and inclination to cook! I do like the sort of slow pottering sort of cooking that a relaxed Sunday can lend itself to, though- it makes me feel nostalgic and contented!

On a Sunday I usually do a roast, or a joint in the slow cooker. Left overs on Monday.

Sometimes we get a take-away if I don't want the bother of cooking.

In the summer we often do a BBQ on a Sunday.

WeeOrcadian · 23/03/2025 19:54

We have curry / daal Sunday
My favourite day of the week and we make enough for my lunch during the week too

IsItAllRubbish · 23/03/2025 19:55

I love a mid week roast. Feels so luxurious!

Owlteapot · 23/03/2025 19:55

Sunday is the only evening we tend to all be home so usually a roast in winter and a bbq in summer

CraftyGin · 23/03/2025 19:56

Sunday roast here, hopefully with guests.

I also rotate round the meats and too have a set of sides (stuffing with chicken, yorkies with beef etc) woe betide green beans not being available on pork week!! I also sound bonkers being so strict but I like it lol

Ablondiebutagoody · 23/03/2025 19:58

Slightly special. Not normally a full on roast but something that takes a bit more time than a quick week night pasta etc.

Fatloss · 23/03/2025 19:58

Sunday lunch is either really basic or Chinese Dimsum at a restaurant.

Gowlett · 23/03/2025 19:59

Rarely. Might have one on Mother’s Day.

HundredPercentUnsure · 23/03/2025 19:59

More often than not it's a roast for us, depends what our plans are for the day. Today we went out so we cooked a whole chicken in the slow cooker and then quickly roasted off some veg and spuds when we got home. Honey roasted beetroot is my new fav side!

sel2223 · 23/03/2025 20:01

Sunday we always try to make a family day so we do make a point of eating all together - not always a roast dinner but always something a bit different to what we have through the week.

NicolaCasanova · 23/03/2025 20:02

I love roast beef and also like roast chicken once in a while but they’re so expensive we only eat them at PILs (they very kindly pay, we buy, cool and wash up). We had a roast at home at Christmas and in Mumsnet style made it last 3 days!

leresar · 23/03/2025 20:03

Not a thing for us, it never was for me or DH when growing up (none of our parents are from the UK although we live here now). DD has always done a club on Sundays which now has a 12.30pm start, so being at home for a big lunch isn't practical. We usually do a family leisure swim on Sunday morning and have a packed lunch together, then DD goes for her club.

We spend all day together as a family on weekends, and eat together as a family every evening as it is.

NicolaCasanova · 23/03/2025 20:04

On Sundays DS and I go to sport in the morning and get back starving at around 1pm so we almost always have omelette for lunch as it’s quick and filling, and then we can go out in the afternoon before the Sunday evening routine kicks in.
