Labour activists are so aggressive

My town is preparing for a b-election due to the previous MP beating up a member of the public.

Today I visited the old town to pick up a couple of bits of shopping and I thought I would take a walk with my daughter in the pram.

I was walking minding my own business when I was approached by 2 older ladies handing out leaflets, that was no problem and I accepted one. They tried to get me to stop and talk but I politely said I didn’t have the time and went on my way.

I went around the corner and 2 more approached me, these ones were early 20s men? And I say this in the nicest possible way. They were wearing the far left “uniform”. Multicoloured hair, the pronoun badges etc..

They tried to pass me numerous leaflets but I told them I was in a rush and just kept on walking. Tell me why they decided it was appropriate to follow me down the street letting me know that reform are racist and if I want to save the town I shouldn’t vote for reform. They just wouldn’t stop badgering me even though I asked them twice to please leave me alone. Even crossing over the road with me as I tried to get away.

They really intimidated me, and just would not take no for an answer. I just wanted a little walk with my baby, who has had me up most of the night teething.

Sorry, I just wanted a rant. I did vote for Labour in the previous election but this new person just isn’t the right person for my town so I’m unsure of who I will vote for this time around.

When is the by-election?

No date announced yet.

If it’s the seat I think it is then reform are nailed on to win if they are fielding a candidate because of the numerous ongoing issues with migrants in the area.

I work in this area and hear the issues regularly from colleagues who live in the area and service users, and also have seen it with my own eyes.

So what's changed with regard to the issue in the last six months?

I imagine the fact Labour are in power and constituents want to send a message - by elections normally go against the incumbents

Unfortunately reform are the party people see as sending the strongest message at the moment. Perhaps another party will be able to rally it

😂😂 yup, the second most of us see these sorts of utter fukwits, it’s a case of trying to cross the road thinking ‘whatever you’re going to say, just don’t!’

It will have been this

You lost me at 'far left uniform'

Me too. I am so far left that I fall off the spectrum. I have grey hair (natural), the only badge I own came from a Star Trek convention, and I am a long way off my 20's.

AFAIAA, there hasn't been a far left in the Labour Party for decades (if ever). I vaguely liked Jeremy Corbyn, but he was a bit right wing for me.

JessicaPeach · 22/03/2025 15:14

Pic hasn't attached, it's a poster for stand up to racism national day of action. They were meeting at 11 in Runcorn to 'stop reform'

People can vote in the safe knowledge that Reform will never form a government. Protest votes at by-elections are commonplace. Nigel will hoot and honk and predict a landslide at the next election, but when the time comes around, if anyone gets a landslide it won't be Reform (or whatever they are called at that time - it's hard to keep up with which party he is leading).

Labour’s candidate is vowing to close an asylum hotel despite previously claiming to welcome refugees. Almost as repugnant as the previous candidate that forced the by-election.

I imagine nothing has improved and things are worse, from what I hear anyway

Allergictoironing · 22/03/2025 15:28

You met 2 very pushy Labour people. So what? I've met just as pushy if not worse Conservative representatives, some pretty insistent Lib Dem canvassers and some outright scary and aggressive Reform activists over the years. As others have said, 2 people aren't representative of a party as a whole and behaviours aren't limited to one particular party.

Longsummerdays25 · 22/03/2025 15:29

There is a definite uniform

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 22/03/2025 15:30

Ok, this is where you lost me 🤣🤣
What a load of cobblers lol

The asylum hotel is causing issues, locals are already struggling with high poverty.

It wasn’t mentioned a lot 6 months ago/ 1 year ago but is mentioned a lot now by numerous locals who I have contact with. That means something must have changed otherwise it wouldn’t keep being brought up as an issue.

Locals have mentioned numerous issues of blatant shoplifting as one example

Longsummerdays25 · 22/03/2025 15:32

And a veneer of ‘niceness’ that is totally fake.

Sorrelbird · 22/03/2025 15:33

’Far left uniform’ 🙄

Kissedbyfire1 · 22/03/2025 15:34

There are no “far left” activists in the Labour party. The Labour party is a centrist/ centre right party.

WatermelonLolly · 22/03/2025 15:38

I do agree it is difficult to differentiate between the main parties now and what they stand for- and even worse that whatever manifesto they stand on seems to be a pack of lies anyway

ERthree · 22/03/2025 15:40

TheAlertFinch · 22/03/2025 13:27

Oh dear, never mind.

LlynTegid · 22/03/2025 15:42

skintasabint · 22/03/2025 13:30

I wouldn’t even know who Reform are putting up for the election, the previous MP was decent tbf

No he was not, he was violent and received justice which he deserved.

However, two wrongs don't make a right.

LoveSandbanks · 22/03/2025 15:52

I’m, what most people consider to be, far left but I’ve never considered my hair to be multi coloured and I definitely don’t wear my pronouns.

im with the others, you lost me at that comment.

Quite how you can say the last MP was decent is beyond me. Fairly sure the person he beat up would disagree!

Closing one hotel is simply pushing the problem elsewhere - no doubt to another area with very high levels of poverty. People should be very angry that the Labour government has failed on it's promise to close ALL hotels housing asylum seekers as well as it's ridiculous 'smash the gangs' nonsense. A very good reason NOT to elect this stupid woman.

JudgeJ · 22/03/2025 16:24

PlasticBags · 22/03/2025 13:41

So two Labour leafleters kept after you, and even though the two previous ones behaved entirely appropriately, you’ve now decided on a sample size of two that all Labour canvassers are ‘so aggressive’? Despite the fact that your own experience within fifty yards of street disproves this?

To be pedantic, the OP's experience doesn't 'disprove' her assertion, it simply fails to validate it! A sample size of less that 100% can neither prove nor disprove anything.

WatermelonLolly · 22/03/2025 16:36

The last mp was terrible, he sounded like a thug and then ended up acting like he sounded
