Schools shouldn't teach cursive writing

When I grew up, we'd learn to write using print ie not joined up. Then a few years later we'd have to re-learn in cursive. I remember finding relearning quite difficult eg the way "s" is written is very different. What was the point in teaching print and then expecting everyone to use cursive?

A lot of primary schools now teach cursive from the off.

But why teach it at all? Not many adults write pure cursive and sometimes cursive, particularly messy or very elaborate cursive can be really hard to read. It looks nice sometimes but what's the point in using it when print is much easier to read and most adults use it or a variation of print anyway.

I deal with old documents that are always written in cursive and they are a nightmare to read.

Personally, I mainly use print but do join some letters. But my writing is odd anyway because I also did calligraphy and have incorporated some of that too. My capital "h" is ridiculous!

Has anyone mentioned a possible dyspraxia screening? Maybe something to think about if her writing is really affected by a change of pen.

Have you checked if she can have a scribe for the written exam? It's really rather common, or it used to be when I was teaching.

Edited

I think it's her pen grip as much anything tbh. With some pens she seems to need to use much more pressure.

I do think I was mildly dyspraxic looking back alongside ADHD. I was constantly tripping and falling as well as struggling to write. My handwriting now is fast but legible only to me.

(And sometimes not even to me!)

I thought this at the start of the school year. DS is in year 2 and he seemed to be struggling with it. At parents evening I asked his teacher and she said she really believes in it - it helps with the flow of being able to spell words. 5 months on and I can see what she meant. DS’s writing and spelling and come on massively. I stopped using cursive once I went to secondary school and perhaps DS will too, but at the age he is now I can really see the positives of it.

As someone who handwrites a huge amount as part of my work, it is so much faster. I would not be able to do my job by printing. It's therefore much better for timed exams etc.

Not sure why but I find the slow decline of beautiful handwriting quite sad!

I entirely agree. I have proper cursive (taught to write in Canada) and in exams in the Uk I always wrote twice as fast as everyone else. It’s sad how nobody seems to write properly anymore. Printing is so childish.
