To feel this bad

I have just flew to Australia for a family wedding. I arrived yesterday and I feel AWFUL. It didn’t help that I didn’t sleep one wink on the entire journey (27 hours awake). I now have really bad anxiety and can’t sleep properly despite feeling so exhausted. The anxious feeling is just so intense! I guess I’m just shocked at how I have reacted to the journey!!! Any advice from anyone with how to deal with the anxiety?

No experience flying that far, but you seem to be majorly sleep deprived. Why not take a sleeping tablet and sleep for a bit?

Feelingblue11 · 22/03/2025 06:05

Bump

@Batbatbatty my mum actually has some diazepam with her which she’s offered me. But I’ve not taken anything before so I’m worried.

I meant something over the counter, in the UK you'd just buy Nytol.

phonecompaniesstink · 22/03/2025 06:39

Travel to somewhere new, especially so far, can be overwhelming. I would do whatever you can to be kind to yourself - a walk, read a book, cup of tea etc. Sleep will come eventually. I'm sure you'll then feel better. Have a great trip.

Topjoe19 · 22/03/2025 06:40

You can buy melatonin in Aus I think? Just have a bath, some food, watch TV, then lay quietly in a dark room. Don't worry you'll adjust. Have a great time

Feelingblue11 · 22/03/2025 06:55

@Batbatbatty gotcha! Will do. Thank you

I’m saying this here because I can’t say it in real life … but I feel like booking myself a flight and coming home!! As to not drip feed, my husband has not been able to come with us (work). So it’s just me and my daughter and other family members are here.

OP posts:
Topjoe19 · 22/03/2025 07:04

What about it is making you want to come straight home?

GRex · 22/03/2025 07:12

What time is it, 6pm? Best thing you can do is stay awake until 7pm and then get a really long sleep, so you wake up on the correct time zone. Relax, take a walk, do gentle things, nice meal then off to bed.

Feelingblue11 · 22/03/2025 07:28

@Topjoe19 this might sound pathetic but my husband is like my rock and he’s not here with me. Plus I just keep thinking “if I’m home, I won’t feel like this” I will feel safe.

OP posts:
Feelingblue11 · 22/03/2025 07:29

@GRex thanks. I tried this last night but at 9pm and I was bolt awake with anxiety at 3am! Haven’t slept since. I’m praying I have a better night tonight but have been feeling awful all day.

Iwannakeepondancing · 22/03/2025 07:30

Not pathetic at all. I would feel the same on my own away from home without my safety blanket! If someone can watch your daughter, take a diazepam as it will knock you out and you’ll sleep and feel so much better. I feel for you but it’s totally normal xx

Get checked for Dvt ASAP.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 22/03/2025 07:32

I've made that journey loads of times (born in NZ) and I never, ever sleep on the flight. The anxiety is just being overtired and it also feels like a shock to the system (no matter how many times you do it).

I always feel a bit out of sorts and grumpy and displaced.

Treat yourself as if you are in shock. Hot shower or bath and then something quite sweet. So hot chocolate or sweets and then if I'm honest I probably would take a sleeping tablet or your mums diazepam and try to sleep for a good stretch.

You'll be totally fine after that!
I don't like being away from DH either, but think of the memories with your daughter.

Tradersinsnow · 22/03/2025 07:33

Melatonin is prescription only in Australia. Restavit is over the counter with a pharmacy consult.

rainbowstardrops · 22/03/2025 07:38

I haven't flown to Australia but I am notoriously awful at being able to sleep and I heard a sleep expert on the TV the other day, saying that it doesn't matter if you can't sleep but just say to yourself that it's ok to just rest. Then hopefully sleep will come naturally and hopefully your anxiety might subside.
Try and enjoy the time with your family and daughter Flowers

Feelingblue11 · 22/03/2025 07:40

@Iwannakeepondancing thank you. I’m tempted to do this but my daughter will be asleep next to me and I am wondering if it’s irresponsible

@monkeysox why?

@monkeysox why?

Sense of foreboding is a sign but not widely known .

Feelingblue11 · 22/03/2025 07:42

@FeministUnderTheCatriarchy thank you. It’s good to hear from someone who has done this before and has felt similar.
