Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Lucylooloo2 · 21/03/2025 22:48

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

OP posts:

Is there any chance that you can go to the gardening centre and replace the flowers with something?

Gremlins101 · 22/03/2025 02:18

I'd be having a kind but firm word with the child's mum.

I would want someone to say something if it was my kids.

Why should OP be out of pocket because of a thieving kid?

They will grow back next year, so a minor harm.

It’s OP’s property and the parent should’ve stopped the child or at least made them apologise

I do think that an eight year old knew exactly what she was doing and that it was wrong. However, this brings back memories of my brother aged around four with the little girl from next door but one picking all the daffodils from our next door neighbour's garden then knocking on her door and presenting her with them.

This reminds me of a sad story from my mother that happened in the 60s
My parents had lodgers as they’d just bought a house and didn’t have a lot of money.
One of the lodgers picked mum some flowers outside the local Town hall on his way home from work.
She was chuffed to bits as no one had ever given her flowers before but soon after the lodger gave her the flowers there was a knock on the door from a policeman who’d followed the lodger home telling mum the flowers in her hand were stolen. Poor mum, the shame she must have felt
This story has always made me so sad
One reason I always gave my mum flowers whenever I saw her

sorry for that derail OP

I do agree with you OP, you need to talk to the parents. It’s not kind to take from others

I also love having fresh flowers in the garden, especially daffodils. However, that little spark of joy they bring you? They clearly also spark that in others 🥰 maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet x

Howling at this so very unhinged post 🤣🤣🤣

AlpacaMittens · 22/03/2025 02:44

MounjaroOnMyMind · 22/03/2025 00:09

Oh for goodness sake, she has to wait a whole year?

Until another super sweet eight year old picks them sweetly for their mummy.

BabyRuthless · 22/03/2025 03:06

AffableApple · 21/03/2025 22:57

This.

(Also Mother's Day is over a week away, so unlikely to be for that for those suggesting so.)

Does an 8 year old know how long daffodils last? I would have hid them from my mum at that age, until it was the day I needed them, only to find them dead😆

Anyway, YANBU OP. I would be annoyed at this.

Glitchymn1 · 22/03/2025 03:13

I thought I was going crazy, stealing is NOT ‘super sweet’. The fact this child hasn’t picked the daffs in her own bloody garden screams ‘little shit.’
Thankfully voting is 95% YANBU.

Children should be taught not to steal/ disrespect other people’s property.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/03/2025 03:16

The child is just a child, fgs.
Thieving brat?
I despair. 🤦‍♀️

Just a child who repeatedly stole property not belonging to them.

As long as the child isn’t being called a thieving brat to their face, I think a poster being annoyed with them and describing them as such on a forum isn’t the end of the world.

Addictedtowotsits · 22/03/2025 03:27

devuskums · 21/03/2025 22:49

That's so mean. Can you go and ask for them back!?

She's 8 mate

middler · 22/03/2025 04:13

You know what you need to do.
Go now strip their front garden of daffodils

She’s old enough to know stealing is wrong.

What a very strange attitude!

Yes, but kids don't think like adults even if they know right/wrong. What can OP do? File a police report?
Maybe tell the child's parents, but for what?

oohlalalaa · 22/03/2025 04:59

I have loads of daffodils, and a side garden that runs parallel with a pathway, a couple of weeks ago there was a pile that had been pulled up and thrown on my lawn. I would have preferred it if someone was pinching them for themself, but at least I was able to gather them up and put them in a vase for myself. I know I have loads, and they're all over everywhere, but they do bring joy to me because its a symbol that means spring is on its way, and they're so pretty.

Incidentally they lasted way longer in a vase indoors than supermarket ones do, so I might plant extra bulbs this year and give myself a patch to pick from.

Redglitter · 22/03/2025 05:08

Lucylooloo2 · 21/03/2025 22:59

Eek! They only think making me feel slightly better is that I can see my tulips coming but feel like I need to be very protective of them now!

That's as good a reason as any to have a polite word with the parents or she'll be back for them too

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/03/2025 05:32

If she's around 8, she's old enough to know not to go in other peoples gardens, and if she's picked your daffs and not the ones in her own garden I'd bet she also knows she is not to pick the flowers from the garden either.

Have a word with the parents - they may not have realised where she got them from, and if you don't, theres a good chance it'll happen again with more of your flowers.

Kids don't know this stuff automatically, but parents should be teaching them! It's not sweet to destroy other peoples stuff/steal from their gardens!

Littlemisscapable · 22/03/2025 05:35

TheFairyCaravan · 21/03/2025 22:56

I can’t believe that people are making excuses for this and saying it’s “sweet” that the little girl did it for her mum. If my children had done it I’d have been really cross with them and taken them back to the house to apologise.

I’m sorry @Lucylooloo2 I would be upset too.

This. Why is this child walking around randomly picking flowers in the street. If she is old enough to walk around on her own she's old enough to know you don't pick flowers you buy them ! It's not sweet and very annoying..

That's not "super sweet", that's theft, the child is 8 years old and therefore old enough to know not to take things from other people's gardens.

lunar1 · 22/03/2025 05:40

Definitely speak to the parents or your tulips will be gone too. 8 is plenty old enough to know not to do this.

MoreChocPls · 22/03/2025 06:05

Tell the parents.

Mere1 · 22/03/2025 06:14

Pallisers · 21/03/2025 22:54

if you know which neighbour it is I would go to them and say "your dd picked my daffodils today - can't do anything about it now and I know children will be children but I would appreciate if you could explain to her that the daffodils in my garden - just like the wildflowers in the wild - are not to be picked.

There is nothing super sweet about a child picking flowers from someone else's garden. That little spark of joy - gone because the kid picked them.

Agreed.

Zanatdy · 22/03/2025 06:15

I’d go and knock or put a note through the door. As this kid might come and pick your tulips. So his parent need to tell him / her it was wrong to pick someone’s flowers. Especially as they have their own! Daffs bring a big smile to my face too, so i’d feel annoyed at this too.
