Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Lucylooloo2 · 21/03/2025 22:48

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

Aw seriously, these are as cheap as chips, just think about the joy they may have brought her to bring them home to her Mum. Kids at 8yrs old are just that.. kids’

stop sweating about the small things

I bet your kids are so entitled

Needspaceforlego · 22/03/2025 00:25

Just because people can see the child was probably trying to do a nice thing, doesn't mean they don't also think the child shouldn't have done it because of the harm done.

I think Op is right to have a word with the kids Mum but while I'd forgive this time I don't think I'd be so forgiving if it happened again either.

8 might seem old to lots of posters, but lots of kids are only getting their first taste of freedom at 7 or 8. First time they are able to get out unsupervised to play (,and nick flowers for mum)

Enough4me · 22/03/2025 00:26

OP it's not on, she ignored picking daffodils in her garden to venture to yours and take them. An 8 year old would know you'd see them all gone.
Why she would want to be naughty is a mystery, but one for her parents to deal with.
If they offer you a pot of new ones or similar accept it as they'll be upset with her behaviour if they are regular parents (if they appear not to care, then warn them you spray your garden and use chicken poo manure and it can affect eyesight and the nervous system).

BobbyBiscuits · 22/03/2025 00:28

How horrible. You must have a word with the mum. That's really out of order and I'm sure kids are taught not to pick flowers from people's gardens? Hopefully she will be now.
If I was the Mum I'd buy you a few new daffodil plants in pots to replace them and a bunch of nice cut flowers just to say sorry.
I hope your tulips will be safe x

abricotine · 22/03/2025 00:28

Have a word as others suggest or she’ll be back for your tulips! I suspect her own garden will remain unscathed.
my daughter is around this age and has known for years not to pick flowers in parks and gardens…

Onthemaintrunkline · 22/03/2025 00:29

LoremIpsumCici · 21/03/2025 22:49

They will grow back next year, so a minor harm.

And what’s to stop a repeat next year? It’s stealing!

I also love having fresh flowers in the garden, especially daffodils. However, that little spark of joy they bring you? They clearly also spark that in others 🥰 maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet x

But that were not hers to pick. The intention may have been sweet, but it doesn’t make it right.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/03/2025 00:33

Ohhhh, I remember doing this when I was about 6. Best friend and I were sitting in the flower garden in the front yard of the neighbour's when they came home. We ran home as they were parking the car. Best friend cried to her mum confessing everything. 😭
I put my flowers in a vase for my mum and told her I found them in the forest. 🤥

FWIW I don't think the neighbours spoke to our parents.
😅

No, no, no. It’s not ok.

Rainallnight · 22/03/2025 00:43

My 8 year old DD is borderline feral and even she would know not to do this.

In fact, my six year old saw kids picking daffs in a public park today and was outraged.

A lot of kids do it in parks round here. We have a lot of high rises nearby and I think the kids living there genuinely have no idea and haven’t been told that they’ve been planted specially etc.

But if her family have their own daffodils in their own gardens then she knows the score.

Deadringer · 22/03/2025 00:45

Jesus reading this thread some people really would let their kids away with anything no wonder there are so many brats about! As a child I would never have picked someone's flowers and nor would any of my siblings or friends. I would definitely let her parents know, otherwise you may kiss your tulips goodbye.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/03/2025 00:46

😂😂😂😂

Bigcat25 · 22/03/2025 00:48

8 is plenty old enough to instill not to pick neighbor's flowers, let alone all of them! I've been telling my son this since he was about 2.

JustCabbaggeLooking · 22/03/2025 01:06

Aw, I get it, OP. You can't do anything about it but it's demoralising, a 'what's the fucking point?' moment.
My Labrador pup, in her excitement at her first Spring, nipped all the heads of my irises.
A garden that should have been surrounded by beautiful, elegant purple blooms. Just in time for our post wedding party.
What we had was proud, headless stalks surrounded by shredded leaves.
She was 17 when we lost her to old age and it's 15 years since then (so 32 years😃) and she's still not forgiven.
But an 8 year old should know better.💐

Hedgehogsaremything · 22/03/2025 01:09

when I was 6 I was walking home from school and saw some beautiful daffodils in a garden and picked one. I hadn’t noticed the owner had come out of their door when they shouted “I saw you do that!”. I was so scared and ran home. Remember the whole thing 45 years later. Never did it again, obvs.

As PPs have said, the parent(s) must have wondered where they came from. I would tell them next time you see them.

Velmy · 22/03/2025 01:23

You should probably have him shot.

Keiththecatwithamagichat · 21/03/2025 22:56

I actually have a childhood memory of being shouted at by a teacher for picking some daffodils at school and being a bit shocked. I now understand they're bulbs and will only flower once per year but as a child I just wanted to pick some pretty flowers amd saw no difference between them and buttercups or daisies.

So I completely get why it's annoying but the child may not understand!

I did exactly the same as a child, I didn’t realise the significance either. My daughter did the same and gave me the flowers 🤦‍♀️. I explained to her that she shouldn’t have done it and apologised to my neighbour.

Major this year though. We could all be dead by next year!

Sunbeam01 · 21/03/2025 23:15

I couldn't get upset over this because they were picked by a very young child.

Some of these responses are extremely OTT.

Edited

Eight is not very young. It’s old enough to know better.

Bournetilly · 22/03/2025 01:52

YANBU but she probably didn’t realise she was doing anything wrong. Definitely speak to her parents so they can tell her not to do this again.

Surely at 8 she should know not to even go in someone else's garden, let alone pick the flowers.

Not meaning to be dramatic, but that's the first thing that came to my mind.

My late husband was disabled, so it was hard for him to get out and about. If someone had deprived him of seeing our daffies in the last year of his life, it would have been a major blow.

listentoadvice · 22/03/2025 02:01

I'd say there is a bigger problem here in that an 8 year old is wandering around without adult supervision. Seems a bit too young to be alone on a neighbour's garden. I'd definitely not like the thought of my kids picking flowers (stealing) but I'd worry more as a parent of the risks of young children roaming around alone in other people's properties!
