To wonder how many of you employ yourself and if not why not?

Instead of trying to get someone else to employ you, and have the worry of applying for work, interviews, and all the other things that go with working is there a reason why you don't work for yourself?

There are lots of positives to it and you don't need to rely on anyone else?
If you don't self employ why not?

Also all the self employed people I know earn very little, especially the small sole traders. Its more pocket money work.

Really?

I agree with a pp...all of the people I know who are the most well off are self employed.

A mortgage advisor, an accountant, a builder, a travel company owner, an electrician, a photographer...these are just the family/friends/neighbours that spring to mind, there are many more.

Whilst I obviously don't know the ins and outs of their finances, all of their lifestyles/houses etc scream six figures.

Well there still needs to be a customer, which is the client. Probably not dissimilar to interviews, all that pitching for new business.

Nailed it, the people paying you when self employed are essentially your bosses so its not a life of freedom is it?

And how would you stop people gaming the system by setting up a non serious hobby type business in order to receive benefits?

That was the Enterprise Allowance Scheme - best thing to ever happen to the British music industry, god knows how many bands it subsidised. All the YBAs were on it too. Not sure that was exactly what Thatcher envisaged though.
