godawful Gillette ad of man shaving his pubes

ThatNimblePeer · 20/03/2025 21:51

Sorry for the unpleasant topic but it’s driving me mad! Is this happening to anyone else? Every time I try to watch any video on YouTube, the ad that comes up is a Gillette ad of a man in the shower with a deep voice intoning ‘going to groom down there are we?’ There then follows a close-up of the man shaving hair off his body, not actually his pubes but as close as they can decently show. It is absolutely emetic and this has been going on for months. YouTube won’t show me any other ad. Apart from anything else I’m female so male shaving products are not relevant to me!!!! But also it’s so gross!!!! Not sexy or trying to be. It actually makes me feel sick. How do I make it stop?!!!!! I’m guessing I must have selected at some point that I didn’t want ‘targeted’ ads (I.e. ones they think are relevant to women in their early forties, of anti-aging cream etc) and this is how YouTube is punishing me. It’s relentless!

YABU - never seen or heard of this ad, you must have hallucinated it. Accept the targeted ads and come over to the world of Dove face cream

YANBU - it’s following me around too and yes, it’s unforgivably awful

Not youtube (all hail AD block!) but it followed me round on twitch for months. Every ad break on every channel i wasn't a paid subscriber to, boom, it was pube man. Its that FACE he pulls when he puts his hand on the shower glass preparing to shave like he's grimmacing in pain that haunted me. Agreed he's not attractive and the ad is shot in a way they're very much sexualising his body and situation with the "seductive" narrator tone too. I'm not a fan at all of content like that and i never found a way to express dislike of that ad to be shown something else.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/03/2025 23:55

I've not seen it @ThatNimblePeer. Sounds gross though.🤮

Do you have a link? Asking because I forget what a naked man looks like for a friend doing research on this kind of thing?🤓

AlmostAJillSandwich · 20/03/2025 23:57

For those that havent seen it, you get a zoomed in full screen shot of his lower abdomen, bellybutton and multiple inches of flesh underneath it, cutting off not much above where you'd actually start seeing penis where it attaches to his body, there's full happy trail and top of his pubes. Its far more than i want to see of any mans body that is not my partners.

BeholdOurButterStinketh · 20/03/2025 23:59

Loads of adverts are like that, though.

Ads about period products and vaginal dryness have no relevance to men. Ads about ED and (face) shaving have no relevance to women. Ads for baby and child-related goods have no relevance to people who are not parents. Ads for weight-loss jabs have no relevance to very thin people. Ads for over-50s plans have no relevance to younger people.

Personally, I'd much rather have general adverts and realise that I just ignore virtually all of them any that aren't relevant to me, rather than have creepy cookies seeking to track me everywhere I go online to serve me with 'more relevant' ads.

I don't like the Booking.com adverts either, fwiw. The 'hilarious' way they have Paddy McGuinness swearing-not-swearing is tedious in the extreme and - by design - can throw you off-balance for a moment.

Even the BBC isn't immune from adverts, although they are more 'cute' about it. Every time they discuss or review a new song, book, film or product, that's obviously what it is. Plenty of people go on to Dragons' Den without any desire or expectation of striking a deal, but rather primarily for the massive surge of traffic that will inevitably come to their websites as a direct result.

And no grown woman resembles a pre pubescent child just because she's removed her pubic hair.

Just as she wouldn't resemble a newborn baby if she removed the hair on her head.

We'll agree to disagree

Similar to woman on the loo with period on pad.

The 'gush' ones aswell!!

TempestTost · 21/03/2025 00:02

I've seen that ad, OP, it kind of gives me the ick too - and my partner does trim pretty heavily - but there is something really off-putting about that ad.

I suspect that particular ad might be targeted at women, fwiw. There was a time when Youtube thought I was a man, and kept giving me ads for that ball deodorant , beard products, cars, and stuff to make your baldness go away, and weird ads for belts. I only saw the pube shaver guy after they realized I was not in fact a man.

I'm dreading the day when this trend is extended to adult diapers.

Just clear your cookies!

Those are so awful. I don’t know why they have to be so vivid in their language. I can well imagine poor schoolgirls being mocked by immature boys because of that advert.

Also Scarlett Moffat and “get it up there, girls!”

AlmostAJillSandwich · 21/03/2025 00:06

It's not the product itself but how much that ad is very overtly sexualised thats the issue imo.
It's not aimed at men in a "this is a quality product that works well" way. It's shot very seedy like they're trying to seduce you, low lighting, background music iirc, and the narration is in a specific kind of voice like i'd say they're marketing the ad to women almost by ooh, man in a shower, showing off his abs and "V" and pulling faces like hes giving you the come on.

Clearly don't understand that women aren't "visual". I'm 100%straight, but looking at a naked "ripped" cheesy male model type does absolutely zero for me .

VikingLady · 21/03/2025 00:12

It’s coming up on videos DS is watching too, including minecraft videos and educational ones too. Call me prejudiced, but I don’t think there’s that much overlap in audiences between minecraft tutorials and manscaping….

MissMarplesCat · 21/03/2025 00:20

I have no issues with seeing good looking man showing his lovely body.

swimsong · 21/03/2025 00:21

Switch to watching YouTube with the brave browser. You can redirect the hyperlinks in settings. No ads.

Edited

Is it aimed at women? More the gay male gaze, I'd have thought.

Teanbiscuits33 · 21/03/2025 00:57

Jesus, don’t you think you’re being a bit over dramatic here? I mean, you might not want to see it but if someone shaving body hair makes you feel sick then you’ve led quite a sheltered life and need to get a grip of yourself 🤣 All the !!!! and ‘how do I make it stop!?’ Come on, you’re being absolutely ridiculous.

MidnightMillie · 21/03/2025 02:01

BrandonFlowersEyesWithEyeliner · 21/03/2025 00:00

We'll agree to disagree

So you honestly think the vagina of a grown woman can resemble a vagina belonging to a little girl?

If my daughter’s vagina looked anything at all like mine, I’d take her to my GP immediately for an urgent referral.

I’d also do the same for myself if I suddenly started to look like a newborn baby due to hair loss.

Strange that you’d disagree with any of that.

TertiaryAdjunctofUnimatrix01 · 21/03/2025 02:08

If you’re logged in to youtube, log out. Use duckduckgo as your browser. More generally, I also use a paid VPN (there are some good free options too).

GoneOffTheRails · 21/03/2025 02:54

I know the advert and I think the allusion to shaving down there being like a scene from a horror film is what makes me uncomfortable. The man in it isn't particularly desirable either which doesn’t help.

It doesn’t particularly offend me though. And it’s not even remotely sexual.

The adverts I always get on YouTube are for Paddy Power. I don’t know why because I have never used a betting company in my life, but here we are, The Paddy Power adverts annoy the life out of me with the man with the stupid voiceover.

I’m not alone! Thank you! Not that I’m happy you’ve been experiencing it as well, but… misery loves company 😁

To all the cool cool girls who wouldn’t dream of being bothered by this ad or being forced to contemplate an unsexy stranger’s pube-shaving on a loop every time they were just hoping to listen to a relaxing song… your coolness has been duly noted. We all hail you 😎

Lol I've also seen this one.

I could quite happily never see another advert for intimate razors, toilet paper, nappies etc. ever again, especially when eating.

I get it too and it's my kids watching YouTube for the most part. just interact with a just eat advert they will haunt you for months! I told Google I wasn't interested in just eat it continued to show me them just "silently" it was actually kinda creepy
