To ask if anyone gets daily electric shocks

I know this isn’t really an AIBU but I’m fed up of having electric shocks.

The last two weeks I seem to be getting a lot of electric shocks. Every time I open the car door I get one without fail, I’m starting to cover my hand before I touch it as I’m scared of the shock now.

Anyone else get this? I’ve had the car since August last year (it was a used 2012 plate) and never had a shock from it up until the last couple of weeks where it’s constant. Went shopping today and everything i touched gave me such a zap too. 😩

doesn’t seem to happen in the house at all, just when shopping and getting in and out of the car for the last fortnight.

It’s the metal exit button in work for me. Sometimes the static arcs towards me before my finger has even made contact with the metal! 😮

Natsku · 20/03/2025 13:38

There's many factors that affect static shocks like the clothes you're wearing and the atmospheric conditions.

Fun fact - when you feel a static shock that means you are getting at least 3000 volts to your body. If you hear it it's over 4000 and if you see it it's over 5000 (had an exam on this last year, it's the only thing I remember)

TheFatCatsWhiskers1 · 20/03/2025 13:48

Yes. Recently I've even been getting them when I bump noses with my cat.

PoorPhaedra · 20/03/2025 13:53

I think it’s the weather - this has been one of the driest Marches in a while. I always get electric shocks but it’s been particularly bad recently. A friend said the same and I randomly overheard someone in the pub at the weekend saying the same.

gottakeeponmoving · 20/03/2025 14:23

My hair is very static today and now I've read this thread I'm beginning to think it must be the weather.
I tend to get shocks from the car and our local M&S 🙂

I always get this in the spring. At the same time my hair gets really static.

Same here, and my daughter does too! We both have crazy static hair at the moment and keep getting shocks from things, including each other and our dog!

ImWearingPantaloons · 20/03/2025 14:52

Yep, I seem to be exceptionally highly charged!!

I’ve seen sparks between my hand and the thing I’m about to touch before!!

DuaNinja · 20/03/2025 15:06

I went out in the dark the other night and I could see the electricity spark from my hand to the car. The shocks are quite painful.

Shock
billandtedsexcellentadventure · 20/03/2025 15:41

Yes I’ve had loads recently too!

Miley1967 · 20/03/2025 15:43

Yes I went around the office at work the other day. I opened a window and got one, then went to a metal filing cabinet and got another. I then passed one onto a work colleague. I get them from door handles, my car etc.

Dolphinnoises · 20/03/2025 09:02

This literally never happens to me. I wonder why I don’t have this and others do?

I wonder if it’s the tumble drier as I notice I get shocked when I get the clothes out? How do you dry your clothes?

MarxistMags · 20/03/2025 21:08

When I worked in a shop, night shift, and was stacking shelves we put the plastic in a shopping trolley. You had to push it down with a piece of cardboard to avoid the electric shocks. One night I bent down to get more plastic and my bum touched the trolley - I swear I was propelled forward 6 feet, and heard the 'zap' noise it made !

EveryOtherNameTaken · 20/03/2025 21:10

Yes every day. I got one from a discarded banana skin the other day. Wtf.

Gymbunny2025 · 20/03/2025 21:14

I get them when I wear heart rate monitor on my wrist at the gym. Get a shock every time I touch the treadmill screen so annoying! Might stop wearing it!

WalterMittysPuppet · 20/03/2025 21:19

I've been full of static all my life! When I get out of the car I ALWAYS grab a metal part of the door before I put my foot on the ground, that way you don't get the zap.

But I'll have dozens of them every day around the house. One of my dogs knows when I'm crackling with static as he won't come near me - the other one isn't bothered, he snoozes under my desk but when he gets up and brushes past my leg, I get multiple zaps up my leg from the length of his body. Like a hundred tiny needles!

The worst is our garden furniture in the summer, if I sit in one of the chairs it builds up instantly. When I stand up, if the backs of my legs/ankles are too close I'll get a giant zap there, or a big spark 8f my hand brushes the chair as I get up. It got so bad I took to holding a key in my hand and discharging the static on the nearest object before I stood up. Ridiculous!

I researched some gadgets to discharge static from yourself automatically, but I didn't really find anything.

Evenstar · 20/03/2025 22:28

I have always had shocks, it frequently happens with people and pets too.

Disneydatknee88 · 20/03/2025 22:33

I get them from my dog nearly everytime I pet her but it won't stop me!

That’ll be it. I never use a tumble dryer unless I absolutely have to…

Breakitdownplease · 21/03/2025 07:16

Yes. Poor cat. Every time I touch her! Always at this time of year. It's something to do with the weather, that's as technical as I can get 😂

Do you have the same "plastic" rattan garden furniture that we have? I get the worst shocks off ours.

I don't mind it if it zaps my leg, but fingers/hands are so painful.

It's OK when I'm sitting down, but when I go to get up, I have to lift my arms away from the sides of the chair and stand up without touching anything. I then let me leg touch the chair to get it out of the system without it hurting too much!

It doesn't affect my husband or any visitors we've had. Just me! And it happens, no matter what shoes I'm wearing, or if I'm wearing no shoes at all.

Picklelily99 · 21/03/2025 11:03

It's static build up, and yes, I get it all the time; cars, handrails, door handles, even off my husband the other day! That's a first!

Oh, and they physically HURT!

Glittertwins · 21/03/2025 11:06

Loads of times in the past month. Even the poor cat got a shock off me the other day!

Adviceneededpleasehelpme · 21/03/2025 12:03

I just got a mega shock off a piece of toast 😯
