To ask if anyone gets daily electric shocks

GabbySolisX · 19/03/2025 21:59

I know this isn’t really an AIBU but I’m fed up of having electric shocks.

The last two weeks I seem to be getting a lot of electric shocks. Every time I open the car door I get one without fail, I’m starting to cover my hand before I touch it as I’m scared of the shock now.

Anyone else get this? I’ve had the car since August last year (it was a used 2012 plate) and never had a shock from it up until the last couple of weeks where it’s constant. Went shopping today and everything i touched gave me such a zap too. 😩

doesn’t seem to happen in the house at all, just when shopping and getting in and out of the car for the last fortnight.

I went through a phase of this a few years ago - pressing the lift button at work, touching metal things at work, car door, lots of things. Then it stopped, now it's started again but not as bad. I thought it might be to do with the type of carpet/shoes.

GabbySolisX · 19/03/2025 22:50

This is strange because I was feeling very run down and got a high dose iron supplement and have been taking it for a few weeks now and it’s started the last couple of weeks 😂

MollyButton · 19/03/2025 22:53

I used to get them when pregnant, that and cramps.

SpringIsNearlySpringing · 19/03/2025 22:56

I have low iron yet I’m highly charged 😆
It’s really bad lately and I wondered if it was the start of peri?

thenightsky · 19/03/2025 22:58

Yes, a dozen times a day. Its worse at the moment as the weather has been very dry. If I wear trainers its really bad. At work is the very worst as we have cheap nylon carpets and metal filing cabinets that I'm scared to touch. The flash and crack is so loud my colleagues all hear and see it too. Then my finger joints ache for ages afterwards.

In shops I never dare hold the metal stairs banister or touch the lift button.

I've cured the one I used to get stepping out of the car though. I now open the door and reach down with one hand to grip the metal sill firmly, before I put my foot out on the ground.

@MiniPumpkin sorry was meant to tag you in my last comment!

@thenightsky aww that sounds horrible. I’m going to give your door method a try. I’m honestly starting to dread getting out the car, it’s such a loud painful shock.

I never used to, but recently all the time. The hoover, the sofa, my youngest although only my youngest. Got zapped by a kid at work the other day 🤦‍♀️ no new shoes or fabrics or electronics in the house or at work. Baffled

This is exactly what’s going on with me. I was starting to worry a little as it came on suddenly and I’m being shocked by all sorts too.

I'm a SLider and get shocks frequently. I do my best to buy natural fabrics for clothing, bed clothes etc, but whenever the weather us dry for a while it starts up again.

ScottBakula · 19/03/2025 23:09

MuggleMe · 19/03/2025 22:46

Got some new slippers (fake ugh type with rubber sole) and I'm constantly getting them downstairs.

I sincerely hope you mean the ground floor of your house , not your 'downstairs ' 😮

I get static shocks a lot both at home and work .
I also get them off my poor cat , he touched my finger with his nose a few days ago and yowled and instantly looked like a startled flue brush !

doodleygirl · 19/03/2025 23:13

Me! I get shocks multiple times per day, it’s incredibly annoying

Yoyokitten · 19/03/2025 23:16

I used to get a shock from my cat too.
The thing that made it worse was that he hated me anyway and thought I was shocking him, so he used to growl and lash out at me too.It didn't help our bond one bit.

ZeldaFighter · 19/03/2025 23:19

Yes, usually in the lounge off the light switch! Or the children. DH is sciencey so he told me once how to earth yourself- I think you're meant to touch rhe wall first to discharge the static before touching metal but I can't really remember!

Stafanko · 19/03/2025 23:26

Yes! All my life I've seemed to get at least one a day, except weirdly on holiday abroad.
Not sure how it works, if certain people more likely to get them?

SeaToSki · 19/03/2025 23:30

I get about 70 shocks a minute, and more if I’m busy…but I have a pacemaker 🤣

romeoandjulie · 19/03/2025 23:35

Yes, I get it too on escalators, a whiteboard, and taps. It's horrible and can hurt.

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 19/03/2025 23:43

Yup, me too!
in a previous workplace on particularly bad days, I’d knock all the printers out just by touching one 🤣
My lovely male colleagues have earthed my desk now … doesn’t help but it made them feel useful for a while 🤪
weirdly, I find it difficult to use touchscreens and the induction hob is a real test of endurance….🤔

BogRollBOGOF · 19/03/2025 23:53

I've had a lot recently and am currently wary every time I go to touch something metal.

Discharging it when I touch the children can be interesting 😂

Walking through the shopping centre then touching escalators/ lift buttons or metal banisters is crackling fun. Not.

I do seem to be much more susceptible to building a charge up than DH.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2025 23:54

I used to get them quite a lot in the US - aircon making the air too dry so the charge in my hair after brushing was slower to dissipate gradually I think, maybe plus artificial fibre carpet instead of wool.
I think some of the clear frosty weather recently may have resulted in pretty low absolute humidity outdoors.

AndrinaAdamosballetshoes · 20/03/2025 00:33

I get it constantly recently, I’m blaming the clothes which all seem to be made out of recycled plastic bottles these days.

FiveShelties · 20/03/2025 00:51

I get them regularly too, so annoying.

Renamed · 20/03/2025 00:58

Usually depends on the soles of my shoes. Unless I go into Peter Jones, when I get static shock regardless, from the door handles and stair rail. The only thing to do is enter the shop bum first

ThatbloodyRoblox · 20/03/2025 01:08

We used to call my eldest child “electro boy” he constantly had this. The worst was at train stations where he used to buzz if you touched him- like you could feel it.

GabbySolisX · 20/03/2025 08:47

It’s reassuring to hear it’s not just me! Although I do feel sorry for you all, it’s horrible.

Tried a different pair of shoes (new balance trainers) on the school run this morning to see if it was the Ugg tazz’s that were the problem, and have still been shocked.
