Terrified of USA

ToastMarmiteButter · 18/03/2025 09:47

Anyone else pretty scared for the world?

USA gone completely rogue. It's terrifying. This massive nuclear powerhouse that was once a big brother/dad/bodyguard for the free world has now gone rogue. Like your loyal German shepherd or Rottweiler deciding to turn on the family. From protector to aggressor.

Trump is ripping up the rule books, trampling all over law and order and wreaking havoc with the world.

What is worse, is that he cannot be stopped.

There is literally no way anyone can do anything about him. I am strongly of the opinion that by the time his official term ends he will have got the USA into some kind of war and then will halt elections because 'its wartime'. He's very quickly becoming a dictator. The only saving grace is his age and the possibility natural causes will prevent world wide catastrophe.

This man has no respect for law or convention. I can't believe he just does what the hell he likes against his own country's actual laws.

And ... There are people that defend him and his actions, that are getting sucked along. It's 1930s Germany again, but this time the country involved has nuclear weapons and much MUCH more power and military might than Germany had in 1930s. When I look at Trump defenders. His inner circle, and those that sing his praises it makes me feel sick to my stomach. I'm reminded of the Nazis all over again.

I am genuinely very very worried for the state of the world.

I'd like to move to New Zealand which I think may be safe and act as a sanctuary from the rest of the world. But DH says no!! AIBU to want to stop the world and get off?

Educate yourself about NZ and NZ politics. You sound like you think it’s some sort of safe haven from crazy policy …. It’s not.
They have a well hidden major drug & gang problem, immigration & lack of housing issues, economic etc etc

Where could I go that's nice and safe, and far far away from anywhere that crazy dictators might want to nuke one day?

I'm aware NZ has its own problems, but the rest of the world tend to leave them alone. They'd b safe from nuclear weapons I imagine...

I suppose I was thinking more geography and world politics entanglement, than domestic policy in terms of where to reside ...

Plus they have natural disasters.

Just imagine the irony of flying thousands of miles to escape the menace of Trump only to have your house literally shaken to pieces around you by a giant earthquake.

The rule books need to be changed once in a while. The current order came about after the world war, that's not always been the order and frankly thanks to the US Europe has had the longest time of relative peace in its history. Because that's the order now doesn't mean it has to continue even if it doesn't work for the US anymore.

Because the US has spent the past how many years providing security for Europe doesn't mean that it has to continue forever. Europe is more than capable or providing security for itself.

The US needs to prioritize itself, the US now has a budget deficit of nearly $2 trillion annually, that means the US now spends nearly $2 trillion each year more than it takes in as revenue. The US now spends over $800bn just on interest repayment annually, not paying down the debt just interest payment so sorry if telling you to sort out yourselves makes you want to run to NZ.

The US has been asking Europe to step up for ages and yet you refused because daddy US will always pay. And yes the US has been subsidizing Europe. Proof is the fact the EU announced initially spending of over €800bn because the US has said you need to support yourself. And that's just the beginning so cns you imagine how much Europe has saved due to the US providing security?

Look at South Korea who needs US support for NZ, they pay the US and annual fee to help with the costs but the EU don't and have been taking the piss.

The US helped with the rebuilding of Europe after the wars and has provided lots of support so it's time to prioritize the US. What I find funny is Europe refused to spend the % of GDP that they all signed up to but they will now spend way way way more to build their EU military. That €800bn is just the start and the 2.5% announced by Starmer will not even make a dent so the UK will continue to lose influence on the world stage since they are no longer part of the EU.

The US has made it clear even as far back as Obama that Europe is not it's priority with his "pivot to Asia" policy shift but did European leaders listen? No

The world will get to a new normal and things will move on. If you want to move to NZ you can but it's ridiculous to say you're moving to NZ because of the US, what are you expecting the US nuke the UK?

Did I mention Chinese warships cruising by NZ & Oz, ?
Or that Jacinda led the world to believe, while wearing a headscarf, that she got rid of the NZ guns.
Her buyout of guns, was only for “legal” guns, so anyone with unregistered firearms kept them, or sold to gangs who were also running a gun buyout programme.

Some people are worrying about the number of Chinese owned & member only gun clubs in NZ, and that Chinese are buying up land and farms and businesses. And Gov too woke to limit overseas ownership ..

Not sure what you are trying to escape from. But I think it’s change, fear of things changing.

Go spend some time in NZ, but not as a tourist. Most people are super nice, but it’s not an escape. If the world goes to shit, guarantee in NZ you will be needing guns to protect what yours.

I don't even think the carnage will be over when he dies. I would imagine he will put it into law that his son becomes president... that's what dictators do.
And we all say "oh it will never happen" and then it does...

Someone mentioned 'derangement syndrome' upthread... They will love this then:
https://www.newsweek.com/minnesota-senate-republicans-trump-derangement-syndrome-mental-illness-2045600

Declare your opponents mentally ill?
How long until feminists are again sectioned for being 'hysterical' and homosexuality declared a mental illness - or a crime...
Slippery slope here...

This is what they used to do in Soviet Union

Indeed.

People with real pressing problems and financial worries don't have time for this hand wringing about trump and what he might do.

I would think most people are more worried about Rachel Reeves next round of tax increases and benefit cuts and the increase in council tax.

Most of my financial worries are caused by Trump. Our main source of income is from exports to the USA. Tariffs are not helpful for this. The rest of our income comes from investments. Trump has been a disaster for this.

The benefit cuts and likely forthcoming tax increases are to fund extra defence spending for which we never budgeted. I suppose Trump had nothing to do with that either.

My brother is married to a Latvian and my brother-in-law to a Pole. Trump is not good for the security of their families back home. One of my closest friends is Canadian. Trump is not good for them.

This man is a living, breathing disaster for the entire postwar world order who is too narcissistic to believe the existence of unintended consequences, never mind consider them. His 'advisors' tell him exactly what he wants to hear, and are routinely misguided at the very best. The man is high on the smell of his own bullshit.

We cannot just navel-gaze and say we have problems at home, to hell with what happens elsewhere. That's how Trump won. It affects us all.

I'm not scared of the USA. I'm scared of the Orange Wotsit, his hillbilly VP and all the yes men they surround themselves with. I'm equally scared of all the other clowns in this circus, both in the USA & internationally.

How do you know? Hopefully the economy will recover but it seems he's pursuing a whole other agenda, and one that is not advantageous to ordinary people in the US or indeed the rest of the West. Trump talking about '100 year' plans and short-term disruption doesn't bode well. Are you a fan of his? Or just in denial?

Lilifer · 18/03/2025 13:54

@StandFirm I am not a fan of any politician these days, left or right, on either side of the pond unfortunately.

As to how to I know the investments will be ok? I don't but it's my best guess

Bleeky · 18/03/2025 14:01

Trump has achieved his goal in part … OP is afraid.

Trump might be trying to change perception of USA being weak, Woke and handing out money to criminals, illegals and terrorists. Trump might be wanting us to perceive fear.

Ive no issue with deporting criminals. I have no idea why USA, or UK stopped deporting crims, suspects, potential spies etc …

Basically - don’t go to America if you have been a crim or terrorist, or are one or plan to be.
If you are just a tourist, normal student or skilled worker - you won’t have issues if you follow the laws.

There is a theory, which happens to fit the facts, that Trump is trying to deliberately engineer a recession in the US to force every day grocery prices down (a campaign promise) and asset prices down (so that the broligarchs can snap them up at discounts to enrich themselves further - not a public campaign declaration, but it works for all those billionaires in his cabinet as well as the Bezos/Zuckerberg/Musk types).

There's also a theory that he is trying to engineer recessions in places like Canada to weaken their positions on the sovereignty discussions he makes no secret of wanting to have.

How it will end I cannot imagine. It's not in any of the economic textbooks I've read.

Hopefully the average American will cotton on quickly to the fact that decimating their 401K didn't bring down the price of eggs, or that a protectionist US economy putting up trade barriers is going to make a recession much, much worse, or that the cost of relocating a factory from Mexico to New Mexico adds $10,000 to the price of a truck.

Haha! Well I obviously would if pushed!! But if there's any easier option, I'll take it! I genuinely do struggle with languages!! I studied french as a kid from 6 to 16, and I can basically just say my name and ask for a hot chocolate. That's all I managed to learn in 10years! So it could be a long journey!!

Are you taking the Michael?

You are wrong on this point. Someone has already tried and failed by a mere cm

I think it is more likely that the next person won’t fail than a world war

I also see issues in his immediate family that might play a part in him down playing this megalomaniac tendency and hopefully make him think about what he thinks he is doing or there being a split involving at least one of his children

I do think he looks unwell or at the least quite different. Almost like a wax work likeness that you know who they are but they don’t look the same.

But it isn’t just criminals he wants to deport.

He wants to deport immigrants (please note he didn’t say illegal immigrants) and given nearly all of the USA (including Trump himself) aren’t Native Americans then everyone who voted for this must be prepared to be deported

I watched this bit of the speech and saw the flag waving and cheers and thought “Are these people stupid”

GildedRage · 18/03/2025 14:37

@InveterateWineDrinker Canada has the potential to do well from this wake up call. As we work on expanding trade options we can use our own supplies to rebuild much needed homes and military supplies etc.

Are you serious, OP?

This.

Seriously. Get off social media and calm down. Walk outside, touch grass, etc.

Mumsnet isn’t going to help you as half the people on here are hyperbolic too. The US is fine. We will be fine. The world will be fine.
