Terrified of USA

ToastMarmiteButter · 18/03/2025 09:47

Anyone else pretty scared for the world?

USA gone completely rogue. It's terrifying. This massive nuclear powerhouse that was once a big brother/dad/bodyguard for the free world has now gone rogue. Like your loyal German shepherd or Rottweiler deciding to turn on the family. From protector to aggressor.

Trump is ripping up the rule books, trampling all over law and order and wreaking havoc with the world.

What is worse, is that he cannot be stopped.

There is literally no way anyone can do anything about him. I am strongly of the opinion that by the time his official term ends he will have got the USA into some kind of war and then will halt elections because 'its wartime'. He's very quickly becoming a dictator. The only saving grace is his age and the possibility natural causes will prevent world wide catastrophe.

This man has no respect for law or convention. I can't believe he just does what the hell he likes against his own country's actual laws.

And ... There are people that defend him and his actions, that are getting sucked along. It's 1930s Germany again, but this time the country involved has nuclear weapons and much MUCH more power and military might than Germany had in 1930s. When I look at Trump defenders. His inner circle, and those that sing his praises it makes me feel sick to my stomach. I'm reminded of the Nazis all over again.

I am genuinely very very worried for the state of the world.

I'd like to move to New Zealand which I think may be safe and act as a sanctuary from the rest of the world. But DH says no!! AIBU to want to stop the world and get off?

I haven't let myself see anything about the Owens interview, and yeah, the beginning of their relationship is icky, for sure. But coming from supporters of an administration that's lionising the Tate brothers, it's unbelievable.

I don't know if you're familiar with David French? He's a first amendment lawyer who writes for the New York Times, former Republican, he's quite socially conservative and lives in Tennessee. He says that he's been completely shunned in his town and his church for coming out against Trump, partly because the people around him are so brainwashed they actually believe that Democrats are satan worshippers and child abusers and no real news about what the administration is doing can break through.

Wow.

YANBU that Trump is crazy and it is worrying, but I think YABU to want to move to NZ over it. I think maybe you need to reduce/change your media consumption? Yes, the situation in America is very sad, but the reality is that there have always been illiberal mega powers in this world (China, Russia) and another one doesn't mean that world war 3 is about to break out.

I hope you r right.

I know there have always been these mega powers. But despite their dictatorships, the likes of Putin are solid and act relatively rationally, albeit in the opposite direction of travel to that I wish to take. Trump on the other hand is a loose cannon, and dressed up as a bafoon (like Hitler was) which makes him a little more scary imo

Just on the Brigitte Macron nonsense, she gave birth to several children, this would not have been possible if she was in fact born male. She was born with ovaries, how can this nonsense get air time.

I m not a fan of the Macrons, nor am I a fan of complete garbage being said about people.

I know but it's mind-boggling the horrible stuff they've been peddling about her. Honestly, I wish I hadn't listened to that so-called interview but it's enlightening in its own way considering that millions upon millions of people seem to believe it.

ToastMarmiteButter · 18/03/2025 11:22

Unlike Putin, Kim Jong Un, Khamenei etc... Trump pretends to be democratic, which also makes him scary. He's the devil dressed in sun tan, blond hair and a cheeky grin.

I go back and forth on whether Aus or NZ would be better. I think the NZ climate is closer to the UK so less adjusting, and they were very sensible over covid. But I feel like Aus maybe has more interesting things going on.

Yeah! I'd be ok oz! I just love the beauty of NZ and it's a bit less 'tinnies on the barbie' than oz is! But I could get used to my Bbqs and tinnies :)

The US has always been the world’s bully… it’s just we were friends with the bully but now we’re not…

GasPanic · 18/03/2025 11:32

Rather than move to NZ, could you fill the cupboard under the stairs with tins of beans, cat food etc ?

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 18/03/2025 11:39

OP you have repeatedly mentioned the likeness to Nazi’s. Can I suggest you worry about things closer to home and look at what the UK is doing to the elderly and infirm and worst of all the vitriol to people receiving disability benefits- the want for the superior race really is evolving here and as someone in receipt of benefits, this vitriol has me frightened way more than what Trump may or may not say or do.

Lencten · 18/03/2025 11:42

I'd be really worried if I lived in the USA.

Rest of the world it's higher risk - and very unpredictable - and probably lead to bumpy ecomomic outlooks.

I've seen many people suggesting Trump just hastening exiting trends and we're seeing global power center shift - which is alway bumpy.

The USA government, their bussiness sector and every age group is carrying more debt than ever before so their huge consumer base may not have cash to buy stuff rest of world would like to sell them anyway.

The EU spending more on arms - well it's got to be spent in EU and other countries are doings simlar - so the miltary complex in USA could get funding curtailed. Other investment money looking elsewhere - which for other countries is a potential opportunity.

I've read the first Trump term was viewed internationally as aberration now it's seen more way things were going and wider than just him- and everyone been expecting chaos if not able to predict it's form - I think going after Canada was a surpise.

Lencten · 18/03/2025 11:47

NZ a lovely place - have family there but they do have their own problems and Australia also been hit by Trump antics already.

I think perhaps you need to do a lot more research - not least would they want you.

Yes you are right. I hadn't really thought about it like that before, but leaving our friendship with a bully is probably a good thing so I guess there is an upside to this, when viewed as you've put it.

I don't like the cuts to services over here which are starting to remind me of that effing 'Doge' over there... However, what's going on with the Muskrat and Agent Orange is magnitudes worse for vulnerable people in the US. They are going after all public services basically. And medicaid/medicare is very much under threat. It's very very dark. Also, let's not forget that we are bound to enter another round of austerity because of increased defence spending - and we have our 'friends' to thank for that. It's going to be very rough.

!!haha! They may not want my personality!! (and I would feel guilty to inflict myself on anyone to be honest!!) but apparently they need people of my profession as there's a skills gap! (Luckily!)!! But I have to decide where I want to go, before I start worrying about whether they'll accept me! ;)

Tech billionaires are flocking to New Zealand. Do you really think they won't do there what they're doing elsewhere?

In the US, there's a lot of smaller grass roots protests going on. The Democrats have rolled over and are playing dead for this fascist regime other than a few like Bernie and AOC. There is nothing but dead silence coming from the lead Dems. If anything happens, it's going to be from the ground up. Mainstream media isn't covering much, some local media is covering the anti Elon protests. But they're not covering the veterans at DC, the town halls that are kicking people out, it's being censored.

It actually hasn't because it didn't even come into existence until the 1700s or something and the British Empire was the worlds pre-eminent superpower probably in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

StandFirm · 18/03/2025 11:56

I was disgusted to hear about Gavin Newsome inviting Bannon and other MAGA types to his new podcast. He who had been called 'Newscum' by those very people? But hey, greed and ambition is worth more I suppose.

I have lived in NZ before, and also Japan which is quite quake prone!! I think I'd rather risk a natural disaster than a full on war. But I take your point!

Is there a country I can escape to, that is safe? (ideally where I don't have to learn another language because i am crap at languages! Really crap! And Japanese was bloody hard for my frazzled brain to learn! Not sure if I'd be able to repeat the experience now I'm even older and slower in the cog department!)

So you are terrified for yourself and the future of civilisation but not enough to want to learn another language if that would (in your view) keep you safe? Hmm.

Because I'm worrying about the USA doesn't mean I'm not worried about the state of our own country. My sibling has v severe mh probs and relies on the state for all aspects of his life from housing to eating to medication ... and so I of course worry about his future and the state of our own country and everyone who lives here.

But the global picture will and does impact our daily lives, our healthcare, our social care, our housing etc.. so much more than we appreciate sometimes. Trump's antics have global impact and it's his recent actions that have led the government to want to invest more in defence, leading them to want to make cuts elsewhere (and while I feel they are targeting very much the wrong people, it is global politics which is contributing to a lot of our home problems). I also worry about my children. Teenagers who are not a million miles off conscription age. One would be ok with that. The other would crumble.

Republicans push to make "Trump Derangement Syndrome" a mental illness

Five Republican Minnesota state senators are pushing for the term to be included in the state's definition of mental illness.

Haha! Well I obviously would if pushed!! But if there's any easier option, I'll take it! I genuinely do struggle with languages!! I studied french as a kid from 6 to 16, and I can basically just say my name and ask for a hot chocolate. That's all I managed to learn in 10years! So it could be a long journey!!
