AIBU that a haircut shouldn't cost £60!?

HollyLondoner · 17/03/2025 20:12

Why is the cost of my haircut increased every time I visit? I have my haircut every 12 weeks on average and the price increase a few pounds every time. It's gone from £35 around 5 years ago when I started to £60. My favourite hairdresser hasn't been promoted so it's not that. I know she gets paid minimum wage and it doesn't feel right but she's an amazing hairdresser. I went today and was charged £62!?

The cheapest person is £58 and most expensive £90! Not a crazy fancy salon. I'm on the outskirts of London fyi so no means central!

YABU - that's how much it cost
YANBU - it's become so expensive!

Rent, business rates, employers pension contributions, heating, air conditioning, maintenance of appliances, shampoo, lighting, hot water, clean towels, cleaning, payment machines, conditioner, staff wages, staff bonus, NI costs and most important of all - the skill of the hairdresser. It all costs.

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/03/2025 08:00

I don’t think £60 is extortionate to be honest.

Last time I went to a Rush I was quoted £250 for a top section highlights reapplication and trim. Needless to say I didn’t pay.

I’m in London admittedly but £60 for a decent haircut sounds ok to me.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 18/03/2025 08:47

It’s ridiculous isn’t it. My salary hasn’t doubled in the last 10 years. But my cleaner’s & my hairdresser’s have.

dizzydizzydizzy · 18/03/2025 08:58

Also outskirts of London. I pay £55. I could go to a cheaper salon or get a mobile hairdresser but I really like the haircut this particular woman does for me.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 18/03/2025 09:03

£30 for me for wash cut and blow dry with great hairdresser local salon east anglia. Lots of great comments about my hair. Visit every 2 months.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 17/03/2025 20:25

I get charged £50 for a wet cut

dh gets charged £30…its cut by the same woman and is longer than mine

hair cuts are expensive!!

That really annoys me. DH used to have a flat top years ago, which isn't the easiest style to do. It was cheaper for him than it was for me to get my ends trimmed, despite the fact it took longer to do his than mine.

Shouldn't be allowed.

Go to a college. 15quid wash cut n dry

£5 at my local training salon for CBD

CuteOrangeElephant · 18/03/2025 09:26

I pay €87 for a curl cut, finally found a hairdresser I trust. She's worth every penny.

For that she's actively cutting my hair for 45 minutes and I get to sit in the salon for an additional 45 minutes whilst my hair dries under a heat lamp.

I could go to the salon in the next village over and pay less than half the price, but I have never left there feeling good about my hair. You get what you pay for.

So become a cleaner or hairdresser then

This thread makes me feel so incredibly grateful for all my clients who are happy to pay me what I am worth.

Who come to me in my clean private studio that I keep really peaceful and nice for them at a continually rising cost.

Who appreciate my instinct and (constantly updated) skill in tailoring haircuts and colours for them, because I have decades of experience and a love for making people feel listened to, comfortable and beautiful.

Hairdressing is a skill that requires a lot of interpersonal intelligence amongst many other things that people don’t realise. I work very hard to make my clients happy and that is something many people find valuable, thankfully!

How are you with coarse, thick hair? Having just had another absolute disaster with the hairdresser ignoring what I wanted (a fringe, a little bit of shaping round the face, no short layers). I took a photo in and everything. Ended up with short top layers leaving me looking like I have a bob on top of long hair. Worse still, the top is angled, so longer at the front, shorter at the back, pushing the hair forward. On my coarse, thick hair which frizzes, I look like a dandelion clock. I need the weight, that's why it's long. I can't wear a bob, that's why I don't have one.

I'd pay any money you like if you understand thick, coarse hair with a bit of a curl. So few do, I'm starting to think I have alien hair they've never seen before. Fed up with saying, 'don't thin it out with those awful shears that split the ends all the way up, don't give me short layers' and being ignored.

It took that salon 20 minutes to cut and 50 minutes to style, disguising how bad the cut was, so didn't complain at the time. It wasn't until I washed it and faced an old English sheepdog in the mirror I realised the extent. She had the straighteners so hot my hair was smoking. If she'd cut it like I asked, she wouldn't have needed to do that.

I'd love to find someone like you who listens. You'd be worth all the money, you really would.

No sensible person goes to Rush!

There's not really any difference between your YABU and your YANBU, is there?

I doubt they have.

However, their energy bills have probably quadrupled. What do you think it costs to have several hairdryers going five or six hours a day? Also the constant hot water. The lighting.

Look what's happened to your own domestic gas and electric costs. Scary, isn't it?

Ahhh bless you. That sounds like a nightmare!
Finding a good hairdresser requires research. Ask women who have similar hair to you with nice haircuts where they have it done. Look for those with more experience, and preferably Vidal Sassoon training under their belt. Don’t be afraid to book consultations with stylists before booking a full appointment, so you can get a feel of whether they understand your hair or not. Someone with good training and lots of experience can surely handle coarse thick hair—I have many clients with such hair and I can assure you it’s possible! Good luck :)

DazzlingCuckoos · 18/03/2025 13:39

Look up the rateable value of the salon address. Our business has a rateable value of £55,000. That's the equivalent of what we pay in rent.

We then pay 54.6p in the pound for business rates so pay another £30k.

Our electric bills are almost £1,000 a month.

I did a chart the other day of our costs. Key items are:

  • wages, including employer's NI & pension costs - 54%
  • Premises costs - rent, rates, insurance, light & heat, maintenance - 11%
  • Tax - 8.2%

The costs of running a business are increasing by a staggering amount. Business owners are the last people to get a share of the business income after all the other costs have been paid. Our choices are to either take a pay cut ourselves (even though I haven't given myself a payrise in 10 years) or increase prices.

Happens on every thread about hair. Competitive thrift. ‘I hack at my hair with the kitchen scissors and I look great.’ Etc etc.

So what? Why do you have a problem with people saving money? Do you also bash people who don't eat a lot, and call them 'teeny-tiny?' 🙄 And mock people who don't like to answer the door if they are not expecting anyone? 🙄

Saving money is not as ludicrous and pathetic as people rushing on here to say they pay £400 for a visit to the hairdresser! Like some kind of 'I am considerably richer than YOW' badge of honour!!!

And as I thought, there was no such thing as a £400 hairdresser bill on the links that one poster put on! (Despite her banging on about how much she sometimes pays £400 for a cut and colour.) Just backpeddaling and saying 'I said £300 to £400.' Well £280 which appeared on a couple of he links is NOT £400 dear. Wink

Are you OK?

GUARDIAN1 · 18/03/2025 17:59

My hairdresser has put her prices up recently, by about £5 - £10 depending on what she is doing. She used to be salon-based but now only sees clients in their own homes. Therefore, no rent/business rates, uses clients' hot water, electricity etc. She is an excellent hairdresser but £165 for a colour/highlights and cut, or £60 just for a cut, is too much for me to pay now. I'm dreading telling her I can't have her anymore, but with the cost of living being what it is, this is a luxury I can't justify right now.

RetiredEarlyHappilyBusy · 18/03/2025 18:09

I think that's outrageous OP but then I live in the North, where I pay £20 including tip every four weeks to have my (admittedly) short hair trimmed and my eyebrows tidied up. It takes around half an hour for both and is done by the very lovely salon owner.

OnePearlOtter · 18/03/2025 18:30

A lot of the costs go in VAT and taxes.Employment costs for employed salons are very expensive which includes wages, pension costs and employers NI when you factor in product cost,an increase of nearly 20% this year, rent ,electricity, water, insurance, advertising etc etc, I could go on and on,there is very little profit. How much would you pay a plumber or electrician.

Stressed2025 · 18/03/2025 18:31

I pay £58 for a full head colour, cut and style

keffie12 · 18/03/2025 18:36

£100 for cut, colour and blow dry. £55.00 for the cut. Worth every penny. My mane is my pride and joy

Most hairdressers that I know are self-employed and rent the chair from the salon owner. This will have to be included in the costs as well as tax, ni, insurance, transport and equipment. These are trained, skilled professionals and as such we should pay for their skill. We have a choice to pay or go elsewhere. Cut and colour by me in the midlands is over £100 so have had to decide to use a box dye and get it cut less often.
