AIBU that a haircut shouldn't cost £60!?

Why is the cost of my haircut increased every time I visit? I have my haircut every 12 weeks on average and the price increase a few pounds every time. It's gone from £35 around 5 years ago when I started to £60. My favourite hairdresser hasn't been promoted so it's not that. I know she gets paid minimum wage and it doesn't feel right but she's an amazing hairdresser. I went today and was charged £62!?

The cheapest person is £58 and most expensive £90! Not a crazy fancy salon. I'm on the outskirts of London fyi so no means central!

YABU - that's how much it cost
YANBU - it's become so expensive!

Can you start going to her house and pay her half?

NotTheDebtDoctorWithTheHungryScalpel · 17/03/2025 20:34

My dds go to the barbers, about £15 for a cut and style here.

I haven't had a haircut in 15 years though.

MiniPumpkin · 17/03/2025 20:34

Mine is £100 but that’s a cut and colour

£20 for the best, most amazing hairdresser here.

I raise you £18 in Lancashire ✂️

@ThreeMagicNumber apologies minimum wage is more like £12 now but that's still nothing compared to how much the salon owner is charging.

The owner will have to pay rent / supplies / pay utilities (electricity is likely a huge bill at the moment) and also tax if they turnover over a certain amount + take a bit of profit on top.

If she was self employed and came to your house / hosted in her own house, you'd pay half of that cost.

I used to pay close to £300 for balayage, toner, cut, blow dry (hair down to my waist) and the same service in my own house was £120 but I had to wash my own hair 😂

BatchCookBabe · 17/03/2025 20:36

Yep. The 2 main salons in my market town charge £60 to £75 for a fecking CUT (and it includes a wash and blow dry.) I said 'can I not just have a dry cut?' They said 'oh no we don't do that.' They do the wash and blow dry as well so they can justify the exorbitant cost!

My hair was looking shite after 4 years of no proper cut (thank you lockdown!) But I found a woman on Facebook - circa mid 2024 - who comes to your house, and only charges £20 for a haircut. She does it beautifully! I give her £25, and also a cappuccino and some nice biscuits. And we really get on well too, and have a lot in common, so we chat away like old friends.

So we're all happy!

PrettayGood · 17/03/2025 20:37

Mine is £170!

Phase2 · 17/03/2025 20:37

@HollyLondoner yeah not even the top stylist just crazy expensive. Everywhere I look locally it’s really expensive for a cut.

RedRiverShore5 · 17/03/2025 20:40

I have a dry cut, well, it's wetted with a water spray, trimmed, dried off a bit but not styled, it's curly, cost £30

I am considering trying a barber, but I wasn’t sure if they do women. I’m paying £60 for a trim (pixie cut) but it’s a lot to pay once a month. I’m in the NW. A man could cross the road and pay 1/4 of what I pay!

Same. Mine is £27.95 and I thought that was expensive til I read this thread.

NoWayNoandNever · 17/03/2025 20:42

Agree prices have increased to a crazy amount and salons must be struggling. I go between two salons generally and swap when they start increasing the price too much.. I have foils and now find myself paying for added extras. So the price for the foils then it’s £25 for toner, £30 for a blow dry, £20 for conditioning treatment, none of which I’m asked about. I do admittedly have thick hair but I drew the line last time at paying £175 for half a head of foils with no cut and will be looking elsewhere now..

BIossomtoes · 17/03/2025 20:43

Mine’s £65 every eight weeks. I consider it money well spent when I have to look at it every day.

Lots have a price for ladies cuts separately, usually much cheaper than a salon though, the one my dds go to charge by length/cut.

The most expensive thing they do is a total restyle and that's £40.

Worth looking around.

Motheranddaughter · 17/03/2025 20:43

I don’t know how much a cut and blow dry is as I always get mine coloured
That costs £160 every 6 weeks

BobbyBiscuits · 17/03/2025 20:44

If you can wash your own hair then ask one of the ones you like to do it privately? They can charge much less if they don't have to adhere to the salon or be using a rented chair.

autumn1610 · 17/03/2025 20:45

£60 for me too, was about £45 when I first went after we could get our haircut again….however I work in facilities and loads of my contractors have upped their prices 15% (min wage and NI increases!) in my new contracts this year so I’m expecting it might go up again soon!

Ollybob · 17/03/2025 20:45

I had a dry cut for £15 the other day, bargain! £30 for a cut and blow dry.
I've always found small independent ones in the suburbs the best at prices rather than anything fancier in the centres of towns.

cramptramp · 17/03/2025 20:45

Was watching the news tonight. Item about business rates for small businesses going up by tens of thousands of pounds. That’ll be part of the reason.

Ritzybitzy · 17/03/2025 20:46

£95 and happy to pay it.

JenniferBooth · 17/03/2025 20:46

I pay £65 for colour, cut, wash, hair mask blow dry and straighten

Doggymummar · 17/03/2025 20:48

My ex hairdresser was charging £48 which I was almost ok with. She moved salons and is now £95, nothing changed except the salon. Hence she's my ex, after 14 years. I really need a cut but I need to find a new salon.

Prettygreeneyes43 · 17/03/2025 20:49

Mine also has increased to £43 last visit, south east. I did try a couple of others but wasn’t happy with the cut/ whole experience. Sometimes it’s wort paying more for the quality and great cut. If your hairs rubbish, you feel rubbish. Just think of it as taking care of yourself.

glitterturd · 17/03/2025 20:49

My window cleaner takes 18 pounds and does the windows in about 15 mins. I'm certainly not going to begrudge my hair cut! 😂

SpikeGilesSandwich · 17/03/2025 20:51

I’ve not had mine cut since last July and I was shocked to be charged about £60 then. It does need doing again but it’s longer now and I think I’ll just trim it myself, it’s not worth it.
