AIBU that a haircut shouldn't cost £60!?

Why is the cost of my haircut increased every time I visit? I have my haircut every 12 weeks on average and the price increase a few pounds every time. It's gone from £35 around 5 years ago when I started to £60. My favourite hairdresser hasn't been promoted so it's not that. I know she gets paid minimum wage and it doesn't feel right but she's an amazing hairdresser. I went today and was charged £62!?

The cheapest person is £58 and most expensive £90! Not a crazy fancy salon. I'm on the outskirts of London fyi so no means central!

YABU - that's how much it cost
YANBU - it's become so expensive!

Mine is similar and takes less than 10 mins as I have ‘easy’ hair. I suppose the price of electricity, rent, water, insurance, equipment, consumables etc has all gone up in recent years, and it all needs to be covered.

Do you just get the cut? Blow dry as well? How long is your hair?

bifurCAT · 17/03/2025 20:18

If mugs will pay it, hairdressers will charge it.

HollyLondoner · 17/03/2025 20:18

@SockFluffInTheBath totally get things have gone up but the fact my hairdresser gets less than 10 quid for the hour to cut my hair and I pay £62 feels wrong!

It's £50 for me... London suburbs...that's with a fairly low level stylist...the more experienced ones are more. It's shocking

Bloodybrambles · 17/03/2025 20:19

I’ve started cutting my own hair again like I did as a student.

Destiny123 · 17/03/2025 20:20

Go to a college. 15quid wash cut n dry

Phase2 · 17/03/2025 20:20

I’ve just cancelled mine and decided to grow it. £75 for long layers to be trimmed.

Myengagementring · 17/03/2025 20:21

That seems a lot, I pay £50 for a cut and colour.

Jjff89 · 17/03/2025 20:22

£35 for me and she comes to my house!

HollyLondoner · 17/03/2025 20:22

I get a cut and blow dry. Wet cut isn't an option. Takes about 45 mins and I have a length shoulder length hair.

I wish I could find somewhere local to do it for £60! Even the trainees at my local salon cost that much. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Reallyyyyyy · 17/03/2025 20:23

Cut it myself!

Voldemortifying · 17/03/2025 20:24

I paid £40 last time. I paid £47 for the dog.

StrongandNorthern · 17/03/2025 20:24

£20 for the best, most amazing hairdresser here.

HollyLondoner · 17/03/2025 20:24

@phase2 that's crazy expensive!

As for cut and colour, with one of the half decent members of staff, best part of £200 round here.

Just checked - for the salon director level, cut and colour is £247.50!

HollyLondoner · 17/03/2025 20:24

@Voldemortifying ha I pay £45 for the dog too 😅

I get charged £50 for a wet cut

dh gets charged £30…its cut by the same woman and is longer than mine

hair cuts are expensive!!

ThreeMagicNumber · 17/03/2025 20:25

Mine is 135 for half head highlights, root tint, olaplex, toner and blow dry so I do think 60 is quite alot but I'm not in London. How is she earning under 10 pounds an hour, that's illegal.

Bundleflower · 17/03/2025 20:26

bifurCAT · 17/03/2025 20:18

If mugs will pay it, hairdressers will charge it.

Without knowing any of the operating costs, it’s a big leap for you to land at calling customers ‘mugs’.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 17/03/2025 20:27

I had a free haircut once. It was so bad I wore my hair tied back for 3 months.

£60 every 12 weeks isn't much for a good cut.

LauderSyme · 17/03/2025 20:28

Last time I went I paid £30 for a trim, just a wet cut, no washing or drying or styling. I might have had the full works and enjoyed being pampered but couldn't justify the price tag.

HollyLondoner · 17/03/2025 20:28

@ThreeMagicNumber apologies minimum wage is more like £12 now but that's still nothing compared to how much the salon owner is charging.

Less than £10 when she’s been there 5 years plus?
