Regarding keys?

Very good natured disagreement with a friend about this.

I keep my house and car keys separate. My logic is that if I lose my car keys, I can get into my house to get the spare. If I lose my house keys I can drive to where I keep the spare.

She keeps her house and car keys on the same bunch. Its easier to keep track of and more convenient. Keeping them separate means that I am more likely to lose one set as they are harder to keep track of.

I think that she is daft as if she loses her one set of keys, she is screwed both ways. She thinks I am daft to give myself another job when I could just have one set of keys instead of two.

So, who is BU? Me or her?

No one's unreasonable, it's just a different preference. I have my house and car keys together and I've never lost them - it's surely not a common event? In any case if I did I would call DH who would let me in/get the spare etc.

Pomegranatecarnage · 16/03/2025 23:53

I keep them separate-I used to keep them together till I lost them!

Blackcountrychik83 · 16/03/2025 23:54

I never lock my front door coz of this logic , if I lose my keys (which is bound to happen) I can always get into my building by buzzing another tenant but if I lock my front door I can’t get in to my flat so I keep it unlocked .

Your logic is correct to me .

I suspect that that is possibly part of her logic, she has a husband that could let her in. But I dont.

That said, I have always kept them seperate, through two marriages!

I have never lost mine but father did once on a 10 mile country walk, and because mother hadnt taken hers with her, they ended up stuck in the middle of nowhere until someone could go and get them to take them to mine to get the spare house key, then to their house to get the spare car key and back to the car.......took HOURS!

Mother seperated his keys and threatened divorce if they were ever on the same bunch again! Oh and she took her spares with her every time after that just in case!

I keep them separate because if I go out on foot I don’t want to be carrying the car keys too. I’ve got an AirTag on each so they’re all easy to find.

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/03/2025 00:07

What is a non Apple alternative to air tags?

I have done some research but as one does I rather got stuck on the negatives!

Samsung do a version too .

LittleGreenDragons · 17/03/2025 00:11

I keep mine together and have never lost a key in 50 years
< touches various bits of wood quickly >

H keeps them separate and has lost umpteen house keys over the years. Think he's lost 2 car keys as well.

It's down to the individual person rather than if the keys are bunched together or not.

Aparecium · 17/03/2025 00:12

If they're separate, how do you carry them around? Does it mean you have one in your bag and one in your pocket? What if you are wearing something without pockets?

My dgm kept her keys in her bra. No keyring fob, just a ribbon looped through a shoulder strap and through the ring with the keys on it.

dialfor · 17/03/2025 00:15

I used to keep them together years ago. Now I don’t carry a house key at all as I never go out if DH isn’t here

Yeah got stuck on the negatives but maybe I should just go for it.

Perfect! I shove mine in my bra if I’m on a walk sometimes, but worry they’ll become dislodged- now I have the answer!

Outofthepan · 17/03/2025 00:18

And I keep my house and car keys separately

Mudflaps · 17/03/2025 00:22

Separate. Car key on its own, house keys and gate remote in car. Spare house key well hidden in large garden. I hate carrying extra when going for a walk so car key on its own suits me. It's usually in my purse with a Samsung tag.

ammamug · 17/03/2025 00:23

Both keys together but we leave front door unlocked!

Negroany · 17/03/2025 00:24

I keep them separate as sometimes I walk to the shop and don't need my car key, or go for a walk from the house, or dp picks me up and we go out so I don't need a car key.

I don't like loads of keys hanging from the ignition, so much so that my car key doesn't have a key ring on it, just my clubcard thingy.

I also sometimes start the car to warm up while I finish packing it and bringing stuff from the house. My door is one you have to physically lock so that's means I can still lock the door while the car is running.

And if I need to give either key to someone they don't have the other one and I don't need to bust my nails separating them.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 17/03/2025 00:28

I keep mine together. The logic of separating them out is sound, but together I know I have them both. It’s just occurred to me DH keeps his separate and only takes car key out if driving.

Devianinc · 17/03/2025 00:33

How about this. To each his own. Nobody’s right and nobody’s wrong

Devianinc · 17/03/2025 00:34

Blackcountrychik83 · 16/03/2025 23:54

Your logic is correct to me .

Don’t do that. That’s scary

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/03/2025 00:37

I have to say that the logic of "if I lose my key I cant get in so I dont lock my door" is off the scale mad to me!

OP posts:
rumkar · 17/03/2025 00:37

Interesting perspective. You may have made me separate mine!

Don't you worry about someone breaking in? I'd feel on edge checking noone was in the flat each time returning

Nourishinghandcream · 17/03/2025 00:43

We keep our keys separate.

Having all the keys on one bunch would be too bulky plus we have multiple vehicles so that would only add to the problem.
Even when driving, the ignition key is separated (use a small karabiner) so there isn't anything else dangling.

Hate keyless vehicles, in fact it would be a deal-breaker when buying.
