Regarding keys?

Very good natured disagreement with a friend about this.

I keep my house and car keys separate. My logic is that if I lose my car keys, I can get into my house to get the spare. If I lose my house keys I can drive to where I keep the spare.

She keeps her house and car keys on the same bunch. Its easier to keep track of and more convenient. Keeping them separate means that I am more likely to lose one set as they are harder to keep track of.

I think that she is daft as if she loses her one set of keys, she is screwed both ways. She thinks I am daft to give myself another job when I could just have one set of keys instead of two.

So, who is BU? Me or her?

We keep our keys separate.

Having all the keys on one bunch would be too bulky plus we have multiple vehicles so that would only add to the problem.
Even when driving, the ignition key is separated (use a small karabiner) so there isn't anything else dangling.

Hate keyless vehicles, in fact it would be a deal-breaker when buying.

There has been an epidemic of keyless car thefts in my town, the "professionals" seem to target area by area. One is one of my poker mates and his wife. Their keyless car was pinched but their classic chevvy wasnt, despite being worth a hell of lot more than their keyless car. It would be a deal breaker for me too.

What are the odds of losing your keys compared to the pain of having two sets? Surely you have spare sets anyway? This seems like a non-issue?

IberianBird · 17/03/2025 01:13

Together. I have a spare car key in my house and we keep a spare house key in a keybox outside. Never lost a key before.

How is having two keys with two separate key rings a pain though? Thats what my friend said and that is what I dont get!

Oh I did this temporarily as my car was being repaired and I found it annoying to keep track of two sets and pulling the wrong set out of my bag etc. Since having DC I'm a scatterbrain so for me it's about keeping it simple. Easier to make sure I have one set of keys than two.

Don't you worry about someone breaking in? I'd feel on edge checking noone was in the flat each time returning

And house insurance invalid if you haven't locked up and get burgled.
If you can get buzzed in so could others.

Yeah got stuck on the negatives but maybe I should just go for it.

I have a tile on my keys which works for android and apple so both me and dh can locate keys

Tbrh · 17/03/2025 04:04

If you're really worried you can always get a keypad or code on your door so that eliminates that key?

Clarefromwork · 17/03/2025 04:25

Put them together and have your spare house key in a key lock in your garden. Win win

PeloMom · 17/03/2025 04:28

I don’t carry house keys (keypad/ code locks) and my car keys are in my everyday bag.i can also unlock my car through an app on my phone.

Ponderingwindow · 17/03/2025 05:15

I keep mine together and they are clipped to the inside of my bag. I never actually need them so the odds of losing them are low. I can’t imagine trying to keep them separate and not lose them.

The car is keyless and just relies on proximity. The entrance I use to my house is a key code lock. The physical house key is just in case of a power outage.

we also gave some relatives a house key just in case we all lose our keys.
