A&E burn

mummaHE03 · 16/03/2025 16:12

Burnt my hand on the heating element of the oven only set to 160 fan for cupcakes! rang 111 for advice as it doesn’t hurt and is white but is only small. I’ve been told to go to A&E but I don’t think it warrants a visit I’ve got 2 young children with me too

What treatment did they give OP?

I personally wouldn't go for that. I am very clumsy and have a few scars on my hands from cooking.

If it doesn't heal well over the next couple of days and looks infected then I would go.

Clumsy one here too. I burned myself taking roasties out the oven I was preheating for yorkshires- about 220c. Nice red whelt up my forearm. Just another cooking scar for the collection.

I would live in a and e if I went for every burn. Not saying you shouldn’t go just I could not be bothered.

@Differentstarts i find quite rude of you to insinuate that I am lying I came on to ask everyone’s opinion as I didn’t think it needed A&E attention I fully expected people to tell me not to go so I felt better about calling up to cancel my urgent care appointment. I don’t see why you think I would lie about the outcome. It’s quite embarrassing getting a 3rd degree burn from baking really not something to lie about.

Please could you tell us what the treatment is? I've never treated similar burns and would love to know what best to do with it?

Withnoshoes · 16/03/2025 18:58

People really need to read all the posts before replying to a thread…..

I burnt my hand on a hotplate at work that had been set at too high a temperature. Popped in to GP surgery on the way home to ask if one of the nurses could take a look - they took it very seriously and put burn gel dressings on even though it was only a second degree burn - apparently the tissue on the hands can be burnt much more badly than you initially think, and they like them to get checked over even if you think it’s a bit of a waste of time.

Hope you are doing ok OP.

Not the OP, but as above, when I burnt myself the nurse used a hydrogel burn dressing on it and gave me good advice about what to do about burn care / what to do if it didn’t heal properly.

TeaIsNice · 16/03/2025 19:15

a&e for that? looks like 2nd degree burn and should hurt - like hell. lots of tepid water - it will burn for some while (I was stupid enough to dip a finger tip into boiling melted butter - and passed out!)

Oh and I also burn myself on my hair straightener far too often! Gosh, those ones hurt 😂

Sometimes I think clumsy people build up a higher tolerance as we really would live In a & e.

Although I did get my finger with a stick blender once (I pushed the button on the side with one hand whilst scooping clogged biscuit from the blades with the other).

It looked like a scene from Dexter in my kitchen and I was still asking the nurses at A&E if I was wasting their time.

She was like "lets have a little look and see". Her face when I took away the tea-towel was hilarious.

X rays and 12 stitches later, I'm glad I went lol. My finger will never be the same but I was very lucky to keep it, even though it looks a bit mashed.

So I am much more careful now around blenders... I just need to learn my lesson with hot things 😁

.........
I'm glad you went in though OP, it sounds like a bad one. I hope you heal quickly and I'm glad you didn't listen to us here ❤️

nocoolnamesleft · 16/03/2025 19:27

All these people still posting about painful minor burns they happily ignored. 1)The OP's burn didn't hurt
2)This is a really worrying sign
3)She's now been told by a HCP who's actually seen her that it's deep enough to have caused nerve damage

Mydogisamassivetwat · 16/03/2025 19:29

I’ve got a few of those scars on my hands from similar burns over the years. I’ve just run them under a tap and then lived with the sting for a few hours.

I wouldn’t have considered medical treatment for them even if they hadn’t hurt.

I should probably give more shits.

Tagyoureit · 16/03/2025 19:35

I would bother sitting in a and e for a day for that at all. Run it under cold water and put some germolene on it.

Isthiswhatmenthink · 16/03/2025 19:47

Potsofpetals · 16/03/2025 18:11

I can’t believe you called 111. What is wrong with people. Put it under the tap and take some paracetamol.

Jesus Christ. Stop wasting NHS recourses.

Oh boy…

Gcn · 16/03/2025 19:49

I wouldn't have gone to A&E for that either, doesn't matter that it's third degree with nerve damage - so what? It's tiny. What treatment did you get OP?

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/03/2025 19:54

I wouldn't have, but if they've seen you straight away then there likely wasn't a huge queue of more urgent cases waiting.

Ask yourself though, what have they done that you could not do at home?

Yes its 3rd degree, white, no pain = third degree, you've killed the nerve endings. They may or may not regrow (probably not) but they're not vital in that particular patch of skin.

I'd have kept cooling it - then kept it covered and dry, changing dressings often to see if its blistering, opened up, or showing signs of infection.

If it did that or if it just opened up, I'd likely slap some honey on it and see where we go from there - if infection becomes more than redness around the immediate area, ie spreading outward or streaking, then medical attention as thats a spreading infection.

This is specific to that injury, in that location though - if it involved finger tips for example, or I couldn't move something that should move... then I'd have sought further help.

People should ask for help if its beyond their experience or out of their comfort zone, however 111 is often a sledgehammer to crack a nut and will over-react to tiny things simply because they can't see it, and don't know if you're underplaying it or not.

supersonicginandtonic · 16/03/2025 19:58

That's not a 3rd degree burn. I'm calling bull 💩.
No offence OP people like you are why people are waiting hours for call backs from 111 and sitting in A&e.
Also very worrying that you are first aid trained 🙄

Wow.

So your diagnosis is superior to a medic’s who’s actually seen the burn…

AND OP is responsible for other people’s long waits for callbacks and in A+E

AND you’re worried about OP being first aid trained, when she’s actually followed the very clear NHS first aid guidance on burns where the skin goes white…

olympicsrock · 16/03/2025 21:08

Who has actually told you it’s a third degree burn ? Did you see a burns and plastics senior registrar or consultant or was this an ED doctor/ nurse ?

Bogginsthe3rd · 16/03/2025 21:15

So what did they do for it ?

FeatherChops · 16/03/2025 23:31

Did you post the wrong photo perhaps? As the one you’ve attached doesn’t look like a burn that has damaged the nerves ..
