A&E burn

mummaHE03 · 16/03/2025 16:12

Burnt my hand on the heating element of the oven only set to 160 fan for cupcakes! rang 111 for advice as it doesn’t hurt and is white but is only small. I’ve been told to go to A&E but I don’t think it warrants a visit I’ve got 2 young children with me too

There wouldn't be a restaurant left open on the planet if chefs went to the hospital for every burn they got on their hands

SalfordQuays · 16/03/2025 17:08

I’m clumsy and I get burns like that pretty much every week on my oven. I never do anything, just wait for them to heal.

fussygalore77 · 16/03/2025 17:13

Honestly can't believe you would even call 111 for that!

It's no bloody wonder it takes so long to get through to these services if people are calling for this sort of thing.

JustMyView13 · 16/03/2025 17:18

Please ignore everyone telling you to run it under cold water. It should be cool or lukewarm. Cold water can worsen the burn.
I wouldn’t go to A&E for this, but at the same time a medical professional has advised you to - so that trumps any advice on here.

Iwishiwasapolarbear · 16/03/2025 17:20

I’ve had countless burns like this. Not occurred to me to seek medical advice when they’re only small. I’ve just run under cold water. They sting for a while. Just keep an eye for infection- then you would need medical advice.

oakleaffy · 16/03/2025 17:21

@mummaHE03 That's a really tiny superficial burn.
Definitely not A&E worthy.
It will probably go red then fade to nothing.

I've had burns like that a few times, and just run them under a cold tap for 20 mins or put my hand in a bowl of cold water.

{Mum's friend was a Nursing sister of a specialist burns unit}

ExtraOnions · 16/03/2025 17:23

I’m more surprised you rang 111 .. when did people become so unable to manage basic first aid?

oakleaffy · 16/03/2025 17:25

Lovelysummerdays · 16/03/2025 16:21

If it doesn’t hurt it means you’ve damaged the nerves, I think. I once cut my hand quite badly phoned 111 for advice and they said a&e, logistics meant I’d have to drive myself with the kids and decided against . They must of reported it to Gp as I got a call the next day asking me to pop in so the nurse could take a look and dress it properly. Possibly a better option.

That is for deeper burns.

The one OP has is superficial, which is probably why it doesn't hurt.

C152 · 16/03/2025 17:29

Burns should be held under running cold water for 20mins. Did you do this as soon as you burnt it? No, I wouldn't go to A&E for that, but obviously keep an eye on it and seek medical attention if anything changes for the worse. t

mummaHE03 · 16/03/2025 17:50

Hi all, thanks for the responses. Yes I ran it under the tap for 20 minutes i only rang 111 as it didn’t hurt at all I didn’t even feel it happen just heard the sizzle and smelt my skin burning I just wanted to know if I should be covering it or leaving it to air didn’t expect to be sent to urgent care nor did I want to go. Yes I have burnt my hand before and treated it at home it may surprise some of you but I’m actually first aid trained but today I had no sensation on or around my burn I didn’t even feel it happen just heard my hand sizzle and smelt it. I rang back up as I had been given an urgent care appointment to say I didn’t feel as though it was needed and was told to come in still. I’m glad I did I have a 3rd degree burn and have been told I’m not feeling any pain/ sensation etc as I have burnt my nerve endings didn’t realise it was that bad oops I agree the photo didn’t look bad at all it has worsened as time has passed. Will be investing in some proper oven gloves.

I wouldn’t have bothered with 111. It’s barely a burn!

Differentstarts · 16/03/2025 17:55

The problem is 111 can't see you over the phone and some people under exaggerate and others under exaggerate so they are being cautious but if you go to a&e with that not only will you be waiting longer then anyone else in their including all the new people coming in so could literally be talking 20 + hours but you will also likely get a lecture on the inappropriate use of services. Surely you have burnt yourself cooking before. If your still concerned tomorrow go to a pharmacy and ask them as they can actually look

Probably worth revisiting OP’s latest update..

@Ritzybitzy Hello lovely, whilst I completely understand where you are coming from I think you may have missed my update post, I’m currently being treated for a 3rd degree burn and nerve damage. I was given an appointment for urgent care over the phone and I was seen pretty much as soon as i got there. I’m really glad I went now but trust me as someone who hates hospitals it’s the last place I wanted to be I too thought that 111 was being overly cautious hence the post. :)

I can’t believe you called 111. What is wrong with people. Put it under the tap and take some paracetamol.

Jesus Christ. Stop wasting NHS recourses.

steff13 · 16/03/2025 18:11

I wouldn't consider having a doctor look at that at all personally. I would just keep an eye on it and make sure that it heals okay.

MesmerisingMuon · 16/03/2025 18:11

That's a really minor burn not even worthy of a 111 call.

I'm VERY clumsy and have many of these on my arms and wrists, mostly from getting stuff out the oven without using oven gloves!

Cold water and keep it clean. You'll be left with a faint scar after it heals.

@Potsofpetals if you had read my update you would have seen I’ve got 3rd degree burns and nerve damage (oops). I completely understand where you are coming from hence why I posted, I didn’t feel I needed to go to A&E I just wanted to know if I should cover it or not 111 is there for advice and my local chemist is closed currently xx

Feeling a bit 🔥?

Ijustlovemydog · 16/03/2025 18:18

I'm a chef and burns like that are 5 mins under cold water and then get on with it. It might leave a scar but what are the hospital going to do that won't leave a scar?

dairydebris · 16/03/2025 18:20

I'd just put a thick layer of sudocrem and a plaster on that.

Out of interest, what treatment will they do for it? I'd never have sought medical attention for that and am really curious to know how to treat?

@Differentstarts i find quite rude of you to insinuate that I am lying I came on to ask everyone’s opinion as I didn’t think it needed A&E attention I fully expected people to tell me not to go so I felt better about calling up to cancel my urgent care appointment. I don’t see why you think I would lie about the outcome. It’s quite embarrassing getting a 3rd degree burn from baking really not something to lie about.

I never said you was lying in was just reminding people not to believe everything you read online it wasn't aimed at you
