Having this cold snap in March is really miserable and sucks

Very normal weather and temperatures for March! March is cold in the UK. Had a lovely weekend here, sunny and dry.

Meadowland · 16/03/2025 22:59

Been lovely March where I am so far. Yes a bit chilly in the morning, but glorious during the day. Lovely to see all the daffodils.

I think this March has been lovely. Usually the first half of March is still very wintery and some years there is snow. The second half is usually nicer but still coat weather.

The first half of this March where I am has definitely been nicer than usual.

It has been here as well, but we have had several days of frost and single figures now.

Never cast a cloot till May is oot

At least you're not in Finland, where the weather has been jumping from +5 to -15, from bright sunshine to heavy snow, and its driving me insane, can be freezing in the morning and too hot in the afternoon so picking the right clothing is hard. Just pick a season, not going back and forth between winter and spring! (I'd prefer it to stay winter for now)

BeaAndBen · 17/03/2025 05:04

Don’t be daft - it snows one March in three on average and icy weather is perfectly normal. It’s not been particularly cold for March. Haven’t you heard of “in like a lion, out like a lamb”?

Theunamedcat · 16/03/2025 14:41

No we used to have BBQs in March and I was definitely out of my big coat by now

Where do you live to have bbqs in March?!

March is a transition month, so you can get properly cold weather (Beast from the East in 2018 stretched into the start of March), and milder more pleasant springlike days, but to have typical bbq weather would be very rare! Statistically it’s only 2 or 3 degrees warmer than January, though the strengthening sun makes it feel more pleasant (when the sun’s out).

It helps me pretend that climste change isn't happening...i like it!

Like most people I suspect, I know what that phrase means, without knowing what it means, (if that makes sense)…

Never cast a cloot till May is oot

It makes no sense because it's only been partially translated from Scots to maintain the rhyme. It should be 'ne'er cast a cloot afore may is oot' which in English would be 'never remove any clothes before may is out'. The closest word in English to cloot would be cloth so e.g. you'd wash your dishes with a dish cloot.

Opinions vary on if it means the flower or the month but since the hawthorne flowers around May (and later in Scotland) it doesn't really matter.

And even then June can be dodgy!

stargirl1701 · 17/03/2025 07:30

It is still Winter. Spring begins on Thursday this week.

FreeWave · 17/03/2025 07:33

The sun is warm here, but the wind is strong and a little cold.

Sharptonguedwoman · 17/03/2025 08:13

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 14:33

isn't this typical for March?

'It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light and winter in the shade'. Dickens 1861

cheezncrackers · 17/03/2025 08:16

Where are you OP? I'm in the SE and it's mostly been really nice recently. Today is grey, but the rest of the week is due to be sunny. I appreciate that those in north and west didn't get that beautiful 10-day stretch of sun that we did though.

MaisieMacabe · 17/03/2025 08:16

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 14:52

I have never been to a bbq in March!

Nor me! My birthday is in late March and I've known it to snow before now! Sometimes mild and sunny, but rarely warm.
The days this week are mostly sunny and mild.

We actulayy did this time in Yorkshire, but it was colder than the south east. We did manage 16 degrees last weekend though, then the temperatures plummeted to frosts and maximums of 6 degrees.

Yer just a big Jessie. We've been in shorts since Feb. My teens apparently don't wear coats as they a proper northern

RedPony1 · 17/03/2025 10:57

7 years ago we were under 6 inches of snow this time in March!

It's rarely warm in March, but quite often dry

I've heard that said about April. We still often get frosts in April
