Anyone heard of DNV animal rescue charity? Based in Bosnia. Any experiences? Is it trust worthy? Asking for a fee of £400 to transport dog and pay for various other expenses.

I would hope / guess they are ' fine '

but

there are 100's of dog rescues in the UK, the majority of whom will / can provide back up afterwards.

try manytearsrescue.org they sometimes have dogs from overseas. if that is what you really really want.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 16/03/2025 01:13

btw wouldn't £400 be a bargain to have a dog transported over, and probably delivered to your home ? flight / passport / neutering / vaccinations including rabies etc. to travel and a pet passport

Bluebellwood129 · 16/03/2025 01:16

Street hearts BG is an excellent overseas rescue with full UK-based back up. Highly recommended.

WearyAuldWumman · 16/03/2025 01:28

The one thing that has me wondering is that their website only seems to be in English - I can't find any information in Bosnian. (I have family in former Yugoslavia and know bits and pieces of the language.)

This is true. I first found it on Facebook, I just really don’t want to be scammed. I can’t seem to find any negative reviews on it or people saying to stay away, but I’m apprehensive to just send money over as it is quite a lot.

Meet the dog before you take it on

Being scammed is nicer than being killed by a nasty dog.

Any reason you are not considering adopting one of the many thousands of dogs currently sat in rescue centres in the UK?
It seems entirely ridiculous to me that we are shipping dogs over from abroad when we have plenty here desperate for a home🤷‍♀️

Beanbateman · 16/03/2025 08:48

This is the thing!! You can’t meet them first - they send you pics of various dogs they have over there and ask if you like the look of any of them. They ask for payment before the dog is sent over ( takes about 2 weeks ) after some thought I’m starting to feel it’s all rather sketchy.

Surely need to meet a dog before you decide if you are the right fit. If use a reputable British charity. When I was looking for a rescue dog a European based charity tried to foist a wholly inappropriate dog on me. I had to ask a lot of questions. To this day I remember the woman saying ‘It’s been shot, but is recovering nicely’. A stray dog that’s been attacked by a human needs specialist care for longer than it takes for a wound to heal. It became apparent they were basically a conveyor belt. Blue Cross are good.

Beanbateman · 16/03/2025 08:50

You have a good point, I guess the ads make me so sad - they post hundreds of dogs saying they are desperate for a home and on the streets. I think I was allured at first as they got back to me so quickly after I inquired.

Why would you take on an unknown animal you have never met? A street dog that is poorly socialised, not toilet trained, probably absolutely terrified of people? Why would you submit such an animal to a horrendously stressful journey? What disease testing are they doing before importing? What support will you have (the answer is none) when the ‘rescue’ goes terribly wrong?
If you want to help dogs in Bosnia find a charity that does a TNR program (trap neuter release).

Downbadatthegym · 16/03/2025 08:51

Definitely use a UK charity. My mum has two former street dogs, she actually took them in when she was living abroad but they are so difficult to train and handle. There are so many dogs in shelters in the UK and some great charities.

countrygirl99 · 16/03/2025 08:54

I bet they don't get it brucella tested. If it turns out positive you'll face a massive problem with getting vet treatment for anything.

haufbiskiy · 16/03/2025 08:59

Just don’t. A significant number of these overseas rescues that target the uk are just disguised puppy farms. Many Tears also has puppy farming links.

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 16/03/2025 09:00

There was a long thread recently that mentioned the ethics and intricacies of importing dogs like this, including the fact that they are feral, they do not want to be snuggling up with humans on a sofa.

The OP of the thread had paid to import a Romanian dog who was dangerously out of control and attacking them all, the 'charity' was beyond useless.

Don't watch the adverts. There's already tens of, if not hundreds of thousands of unwanted dogs in the UK.

Winter2020 · 16/03/2025 09:05

I would worry that using these charities encourages a business of providing dogs to be sold - even if these dogs are then bred to be sold rather than stray.

Like the money flowing into orphanages/ voluntourism encouraged kids to be placed in orphanages to keep the money flowing.

NamelessNancy · 16/03/2025 09:06

Be aware that even if disease testing is done prior to import some can take longer to be detectable. It's worth retesting for brucella 3 months after arrival in the UK. Honestly, imo if you want to help Bosnian dogs I'd donate some cash to a charity helping over there and get a UK bred animal for your own pet.

Darker · 16/03/2025 09:11

I would like to take a uk rescue but it can be difficult…. I’ve registered with one and heard nothing. I registered with another and had a call but nothing after that. I think the issue is that I have cats. Otherwise I wfh, have a big enclosed garden, places to walk… it’s not so easy to rescue a dog!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 16/03/2025 09:14

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Paying to import an unknown quantity (behaviourally and infectious disease-wise) is madness when rescues in the UK are full to bursting.

FortyElephants · 16/03/2025 09:15

I have an overseas rescue dog. I have a friend who adopted from this charity and now volunteers for them and knows the volunteers personally. I trusted her and I was right to - all the dogs are behaviour assessed and many of them fostered before adopting to develop social skills. It cost about £500 for the transport and a donation of around £150 to the charity. I know lots of people are sus about overseas rescues but they are not all the same. We couldn't rescue a dog from the uk as nobody would take us on with a cat, a young teenager and living in a flat (although it's more like a maisonette with own front door and fenced private garden but according to the rules we don't qualify)

Giganticuniverse · 16/03/2025 09:16

These things are absolute scams. Avoid.

It's now compulsory to have a second test for brucella for overseas dogs. My vet practice wouldn't keep mine on the books if we didn't do it.

Clearinguptheclutter · 16/03/2025 09:17

It might be legit (a friend has adopted two lovely dogs from some setup in Eastern Europe) however I couldn’t pay that amount of money for a dog I hadn’t ever met. And what on earth happens if the dog isn’t a good fit?

choose a UK based rescue. You can meet the dog and then take it back if it doesn’t work out.

the Bosnian dog could end up being yet another dog in this country that needs a home.

FortyElephants · 16/03/2025 09:17

They are not all scams. I'm not even sure how they can be scams if they are charging people £400 and transporting the dogs over. Where is the scam? Who's making money?

sanityisamyth · 16/03/2025 09:18

Why not rescue a dog already in this country? The centres are overflowing with unwanted dogs. We do not need more dogs over here.
