That this isn't a normal convo to have with a 14yo?

Today in s completely casual way (no pun intended) my 14yo DD said that she was told off for singing "Casual" by Chapell Roan during PE. Then we said that it wasn't really appropriate at all.. and then she said maybe it was appropriate for "Life Skills" as it was ultimately a life skill. We kind of laughed it off, but I don't think I would ever have had that conversation with my DM. The sing mentions oral sex FYI.

There's a time and a place, and singing a song with questionable lyrics, at school, was inappropriate. As for thinking 'oral sex' is a life skill, to be honest I don't know what to say to that!! May be you need to be asking your daughter why she felt the need to be singing it in a PE lesson at school? Attention? Shock Factor? Showing off? I can't see any reason other than trying to get attention, regardless if that's from the other students or teaching staff. Then you have to ask, why does she feel she needs attention from other people? She's 14, not stupid and would absolutely know the song is inappropriate for school.

LucyLou0527 · 15/03/2025 16:48

I think she probably wasn’t actually thinking of the lyrics when she was singing it but saying it was a “life skill” is inappropriate especially at that age x

What @Sassybooklover said👍

You need to speak to your child about boundaries because at 14 she should know better and if not you need to start with the basics.

I mean we're quite open at home I guess, and I'm not going to pretend she doesn't know what it is.

At school I'm pretty sure she was just singing without thinking about it.

She loves Sabrina too and the lyrics are even worse!

I’m thinking of some of the things we used to go round singing as 11-year olds…

’Come baby come baby baby come come’

’She’s a real pussy wagon’ (Grease!)

’Girl I wanna make you sweat… sweat till you can’t sweat no more… And if you cry hard… I’m gonna push it some mo-o-ore.’

Unbelievable really!

Spirallingdownwards · 15/03/2025 17:05

Maybe the teacher didn't even realise the lyrics and she was simply being told off for singing in the lesson albeit it was a PE lesson. Perhaps have a conversation about behaviour in school generally.

Soootired23 · 15/03/2025 17:05

We were listening to "it wasn't me" and they all thought it was king of inappropriate! (They range between 12 and 17)

Well show me a 14yo who doesn't want to shock her parents. FWIW we spent hours practicing oral sex with bottles, ice lollies etc at that sort of age 35 years ago. There is nothing new in this world.

Personally I think oral sex is a life skill 🤷🏻

Not sure I’d share that with my parents tho!

My school calls PSHE lessons Lifeskills. This includes all our sex ed, so, in that respect, she's right about it being a topic for lifeskills.

That's what she said!! Although I did ask her if they taught her the "practicalities" and she said they didn't!

She sounds hilarious and Casual is a great song. I say good job bringing her up OP.

ItGhoul · 15/03/2025 21:30

I don’t think it’s abnormal for a teenager to make a joke about sex?!

Gonk123 · 15/03/2025 21:31

It’s just a song!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 15/03/2025 21:34

Old enough to remember the furore around Frankies "Relax" .

Nothing new under the sun and all that.....

Moier · 15/03/2025 21:36

All I'm hearing at the moment when I'm out and about is Jade ( from little mix) and her new song ..FUFN( fuck you for now).. it's being sung everywhere.
But l actually love the video.
When l was 14.. we had Je T'aim ( very rude and orgasms). Young girl ( old man young girl).
Wet dream by Max Romeo..singing.. " lie down girl let me push it up.. push it up.
Gosh we even had Gary Glitter 🤢
It's all part of growing up.

Qwertyme · 15/03/2025 21:44

Not really related but when my daughter was around that age, her maths teacher taught them a good way to remember the fomula for Density = Mass / Volume:

It involved Daniel munching vagina.

I thought it was genius.

We love chappie in this house, and I love belting out the inappropriate lyrics. Hope you're daughter continues being herself, as there are too many carbon copies if girls in this world.

TheOriginalEmu · 15/03/2025 21:50

I don’t see the huge issue. She’s 14, she knows what oral sex is. I wouldn’t have had that kind of conversation with my mum either, but I do/have with my kids and I think we have a much better, more open relationship than me and my mum did.
When I was thinking of having sex at 16, I went to a sexual health clinic in a different town just in case she found out I was getting the pill. My 16 year old came to me and asked my opinion of her decision. When I had a pregnancy scare at 17 I stole a test because I was scared to ask for money in case she found out why, when my 19 year old had one she came straight to me.

Openess is a good thing!

Teenagers are always going to push boundaries at school and home but this is shockingly inappropriate coming from a teacher to his pupils and while I'm no prude I would complain. If a kid had come up with it I'd have rolled my eyes but a teacher should know better. Certainly in my workplace that kind of sexualised comment would not be considered acceptable for the workplace because it maymake some people feel very uncomfortable.

VerySkilledFirefighter · 15/03/2025 21:55

If you’re trying to sense check if this makes you a cool and quirky mum, I don’t think it does - I think it’s a pretty normal teen joke in a house that isn’t overly strait laced

It’s not even that helpful - how do you remember it was Danny Munching Vaginas, and not Eric or Pete or Alex?

We were taught it as the vegans ranting about those Dairy Munching Vegetarians which at least makes sense together, and was appropriate for safeguarding…

Hankunamatata · 15/03/2025 22:06

Had a convo with my 16 yr old other week about bruno mars grim song about vaginas

SmallFiresBurning · 15/03/2025 22:09

At that age I was into Rage Against The Machine, stomping around my bedroom growling ‘Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!!’ 🤬 I was raging at the world, my mum confiscated that tape regularly, so I made multiple copies, it used to drive her mad. I wouldn’t have started rapping it at school though… 😳
