To think singles walking holidays are full of older people?

I’m early 40s, single and would like to do a walking holiday abroad where I’ll meet people my own age (male and female).

Am I wrong to think this type of holiday usually attracts much older people? I’m sure id meet lovely people but I don’t really want to spend the week with people in their 60s and 70s.

Solo holidays for younger people are often ‘adventure’ holidays (ie. bungee jumping/rafting etc) and I don’t really fancy that.

Has anyone successfully gone on a singles holiday for people my age? If so, what travel company?

Try Exodus or Explore - or a newish company much better adventures. You can ask (i do) about the group demographics to make an informed decision (after spending a week mountain biking with just men!)

purser25 · 15/03/2025 14:04

I would second HF holidays as there is often a choice of walks as well but you mix in the evenings

Have you thought of doing a long distance walk solo? The coast to coast is safe and you'll meet loads of people of all ages and mainly men. I've done it with dh but would have no qualms doing it or other long distance walks solo. Lots of women do. There's some good youtubers to watch for ideas. You can download routes.

Good luck in finding what's right for you. Walking is fabulous and so good for you. No doubt you already do plenty.

How does this work? Do you just set off and hope to get chatting to people?

Sorry for my ignorance!

You say you’d have no qualms doing long distance alone

but have you actually ever done it?

This op won’t know as never done it would seem!

MadKittenWoman · 15/03/2025 16:25

I’m 63 and glad you don’t want to walk with me!

LushLemonTart · 15/03/2025 16:32

@Ketchupbroc I haven't needed to as dh loves long distance walking. I've met lots of lone females doing it and they gave me confidence should I ever need to. I probably wouldn't on a quieter route. C2c walk is fab for it though. It was just a suggestion. Op knows her own mind.

LushLemonTart · 15/03/2025 16:36

@Mumsday you catch up with people on the walk and walk parts sometimes. And if you stay indoors at youth hostels b&bs etc you catch up there. Depends what time of year you walk? My cousin did the Camino de Santiago alone. Took her a month I think? Obviously not everyone has the luxury of that time.
The Cleveland way is a nice one. Depends where you live? We've done a part of a walk too.
Youtube has lots of videos showing the trails. Lots of lone females too. Check out Abbie Barnes.

Ooookkay...Confused

@Mumsday

Thank you. I don’t want ladies only though as I really enjoy male company.

I think you will find very few men only wanting to walk with women. Any men who only want to be with women will have a hidden agenda.

Why do you only enjoy male company? Confused

What is wrong with people in their 60s and 70s? Confused

I am a bit confused, as in your opening post said you want male and female company, so which is it? And are you female? Or male? I don't think you said.

Edited

She didn't say she only enjoyed male company.

She didn't say there was anything wrong with people in their 60s and 70s. She might just want to be with people her own age.

You're confused because your not reading the OPs posts properly.

LillyPJ · 15/03/2025 16:49

I've been on walking holidays abroad with Ramblers, HF, Exodus and Explore. There have been a mix of ages. They weren't solely for singles but there were plenty of single people there. And some of the older ones were the most interesting - and often fitter.

Nonsense…. I go to loads of walking groups and they’re all mixed. Men like hanging out with women too, and plenty of them like walking!

I prefer mixed groups to single-sex groups too.

And maybe OP is also hoping to meet people she might potentially date?

MadKittenWoman · 15/03/2025 16:25

I’m 63 and glad you don’t want to walk with me!

That isn’t a very nice response and a bit unnecessary.

I’ve made it clear I have nothing against people older than me. I simply want to meet friends my own age.

I have thought about the Camino. I’ve no problem at all doing it alone with regard to safety etc. I guess you’re just not thrown together in the same way as if you’re on an organised group though?

REDB99 · 16/03/2025 07:26

I’ve done a couple of organised tour holidays, found the groups mixed in gender and age and enjoyed socialising with others regardless of age. I think OP just wants to make sure she isn’t the only person in her age group with lots of older people which is fine. I honestly think you’ll find the group is mixed but it does all come down to who happened to book when you did. You can ask when booking for a general profile of others booked on. I’ve always enjoyed my group holidays. I’ve used exodus and intrepid.

BeethovenNinth · 16/03/2025 07:35

Mumsnet is so toxic at times. OP
said she also liked male company. She didn’t say “only”. She is relatively young and so wants to make sure she isn’t with retired people. Where is the need for sarcasm?

anyway OP what about Exodus? When I travelled I used to bump
into them and thought they seemed great

also try one of the harder graded walks
with a reputable company. There are a fair few in Scotland and if you are doing five munros in a day then I think whatever age group, people will be fit and physically young. I would rather walk with a fit 60 year old than an unfit 40
year old any day.

You’re very welcome OP!!!!!! 🤦🏻

BeccaBean · 16/03/2025 08:29

Also did walking holidays with Exodus when I was in my 30s and would recommend.

Harrumphhhh · 16/03/2025 08:36

Try Much Better Adventures. Wide range of activities. Great customer service. Not as expensive as Exodus etc.
