Do you cut your child’s hair?

Trimmed Dds (6) hair for the first time today.

The plan was to take her to the hairdressers to get it done properly, but a bit time and money poor at the moment and it just needed a couple of inches cutting off as has become longer and was a bit straggly at the end. It barely took any time and it looks ok, fairly even 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do you cut your Dcs?

Yes. I've done teen DD's hair since the pandemic. She has almost straight shoulder length hair.
Takes about 5 minutes in the garden every other month. She is scared of salons so it works perfectly.

scandalito · 14/03/2025 20:26

I do but only the fringe because it grows so fast

Cholulita · 14/03/2025 20:29

Yes and they both look a bit free range as a result. Not personally keen on the close-shorn look but that's just my preference.

notbylackoftrying · 14/03/2025 20:29

I think having a shitty, wonky fringe cut by your mum at some point is par for the course and character building

biL and my best friend are both very good hairdressers so I have no excuse for doing it myself sometimes but it’s always fine

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/03/2025 20:33

Yes. DD’s nearly 6 and we’ve offered to take her to a proper salon but she’s used to having it done at home and DH and I cut each other’s hair since covid so it’s normal for her.

Mamofboys5972 · 14/03/2025 20:35

I watched a few YouTube videos and now I always do my DS hair, he's 2 but it's quite thick! I do a little fade round the sides and longish on the top. Don't think it's too bad. Every 5-6ish weeks and saves me £10 a pop.

MayaPinion · 14/03/2025 20:37

No, but I’ve cut my own hair using the pony tail method for years.

Evisam · 14/03/2025 20:37

I took my DD to the hair dressers when she was 6 for a trim. They charged £25 for a 5 minute job. Never again.

DD is now 24 and I have cut her hair ever since. She washes her hair, wears a stripy T shirt and we go out into the garden. I use really sharp scissors that are only used for this job, I cut along the stripe taking about an inch - 2 inches off each time. It takes about 4 minutes. She is always happy with cut. Her hair is long and blond with a slight wave at the bottom, so does not show mistakes.

As soon as she comes home from uni or, now her job 200 miles away, she asks for a quick hair cut. I am always happy to oblige! I must have saved £££ over the years.

LaTable · 14/03/2025 20:38

I have no training, but I do my own hair, my dhs, both my girls, and friends when they ask. Absolute dread the idea of having to pay up to 50euros for a decent cut when I can do it at home 😅
Had a friend who was a hair dresser and owned her own salon and even she was impressed I did it myself so I can't have been too shabby!

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/03/2025 20:40

I love that so much @Evisam And yes to sharp hair-only scissors!

Threecraws · 14/03/2025 20:42

Yes, I've cut my children's hair. I wouldn't do anything fancy but a simple trim is so expensive.

mummabubs · 14/03/2025 20:42

I cut my DD's hair for the first time a few weeks ago (she's 3). My hairdressers would charge £20 to cut her hair and I have no guarantee that after booking an appointment she'd actually willingly sit in the chair so didn't feel worth the risk!

I already have hairdressing scissors as I started trimming DH's hair during covid. One YouTube tutorial later and I'd taken about 3 inches from DD's hair all while she was distracted with telly. Nursery thought I'd paid a professional so I'm taking that as a win!

FeliciteFaff · 14/03/2025 20:45

Been doing it since Covid and people say it's always a good cut. That's me and my kids.

Wildywondrous · 14/03/2025 20:46

Mine are 10 and 12 and never been to a salon, it's very easy (and free) to give the ends a quick trim every few weeks

Pinkyponker · 14/03/2025 20:48

I’ve always cut my two girls hair ( not professionally) and no one has ever said their hair looks shit ☺️

I bought proper hairdressing scissors which are super sharp

No, but I’ve cut my own hair using the pony tail method for years.

I cut my own hair using this method during covid, cut 1 1/2 inches off, went downstairs to ask dh if it looked OK and he said it didn't look any different! Fair enough, I've got wavy/ curly hair so it's very forgiving!
My friend is a hairdresser so she cuts my hair and I give her stuff from the freezer ( I get cheap or free meat and fish from work) good system!

ladygindiva · 14/03/2025 20:52

Yes, gave DD a little short french bob the other day. She hates brushing it and said she wanted it short. Couldn't be arsed to wait for hairdresser so did it myself. It looks really good 🤣

NewYearNewDietAgain · 14/03/2025 21:04

I cut all my DC’s hair for years! I did a pretty decent cut considering I’m not a hairdresser! I used clippers on my eldests hair until he got to about 15 and decided he wanted to get a proper cut from a barbers. My DD was 15 going to a hairdresser for the first time. Youngest DS though has been going to the barber since he was about 6 but has recently decided he wants to grow it long. Which will be interesting! 🤨 🫣

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 14/03/2025 21:05

God no! It would be hideous, i’d be useless. She’s always gone to the hairdresser and very thankful i can do that. My mum cut mine and i had the worst fringe.

Yes, I do mine and did both my son’s and daughter’s up until about age ten when they started wanting “proper haircuts”. When they were little they refused to allow anyone but me to do it and I didn’t see the point in paying for them to cry in a salon. I have a cape and proper hairdressing scissors and although fairly basic styles it looked decent enough.

MirrorMirror00 · 14/03/2025 21:10

No, because it would look awful. I’d rather pay someone who knows what they’re doing.

No, but I’ve cut my own hair using the pony tail method for years.

How do you do this please, is this just to simply trim it?

OP posts:
Buttonknot · 14/03/2025 21:11

DH does our DC, I'd be too nervous but he's pretty good at it.

Reallyyyyyy · 14/03/2025 21:16

Yes I cut mine and my 2 girls. The boys go to the barbers because I'm not good with clippers.

We do have wavy/curly hair though so it isn't so noticeable if it's not the best cut.
