Do you cut your child’s hair?

Trimmed Dds (6) hair for the first time today.

The plan was to take her to the hairdressers to get it done properly, but a bit time and money poor at the moment and it just needed a couple of inches cutting off as has become longer and was a bit straggly at the end. It barely took any time and it looks ok, fairly even 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do you cut your Dcs?

I have cut DD's hair right up to her last cut, which was her first in a salon, she's 13. She wanted "the proper experience" I've done her bobs, long layers, face framing, a full fringe, curtain bangs...
I do DHs too. He's not paid for a haircut in 25 years 😂

KittenPause · 14/03/2025 22:12

DD and I cut each others poker straight long hair because it’s easy. She’s been trimming mine since she was 12 or possibly even younger

SarahAndQuack · 14/03/2025 22:16

I take DD to my hairdresser, but she does have short, straight hair so it shows if it's a bad cut. She's rising 8. I think as long as the child is happy, you do whatever works!

BogRollBOGOF · 14/03/2025 22:19

I do DS1's. He doesn't like salons and it can be a PITA to find barbers who do longer cuts.

I do my own hair too. That's saved a fortune in the past 10 years.

DS2 favours shorter styles that I don't risk doing.

KittenPause · 14/03/2025 22:21

DD starting cutting my hair because I attempted to cut my own hair and I had to trust her to tidy it up and luckily she did a great job and still does

KittenPause · 14/03/2025 22:22

I don’t do DS hair abs never have. DH attempted DS hair once and completely fucked it up with clippers in primary school. He is now banned from going near DS hair

Oopsadaisysgranny · 14/03/2025 22:27

Yep cut all my son’s hair . Have done since they were in their teens . No idea why I didn’t do it earlier and I Still do it now and they are all early 30s . my daughter however has always gone to a hairdresser and she wouldn’t let me near her hair !!!

LimeLime · 07/04/2025 20:31

I cut her hair until she was about ten and started begging to go to the salon. I thought I did a jolly good job, I think my mother put her up to the salon nonsense.

Thepossibility · 07/04/2025 23:54

I cut mine, my DD and two DS hair myself. I have hairdressing scissors and clippers. DH shaves his own head. We have saved a fortune.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 07/04/2025 23:57

No
I tried once during covid and it went very very badly😱

pizzaHeart · 08/04/2025 00:01

We did this when DD was little and then in pandemic, only fringe in between haircuts now.

JBJ · 08/04/2025 00:22

Yep, I do mine and 19yo ds’s hair. I hate going to hairdressers and he’s ASD and doesn’t like people touching his hair. It’s long and curly, so an easy enough job to give a trim.

Sgtmajormummy · 08/04/2025 00:31

Up to about 8yo DD used to have the MN haircut: put all the hair except the fringe into a ponytail on the forehead. Hold in your fist and cut across. Feather the ends and undo the ponytail. Adjust the fringe to have face framing layers.
But her hair is strong and wavy so mistakes weren’t too obvious.
Since then she’s gone to the hairdresser and she’s had some corkers!

DS, never, as short cuts can go badly wrong.

Burngreave · 08/04/2025 00:33

No, I’ve always taken DD to my hairdresser. Initially she did it for free and when DD turned 4 she started charging me a fiver, which is fine.
