AIBU to hate it when a colleague starts off a conversation like this?

Colleague: Hi

Me: Hi

Colleague: How are you?

Me: I’m fine thanks - how are you?

Colleague: I’m fine. Can you send me that sales spreadsheet please?

I mean I guess I don’t have to ask them how they are, but it feels rude not to after they have asked how I am! But really, are either of us going to type about how we really are on a teams chat? And without any context of what they actually want I can’t really say how busy I am. Honestly it would save so much time if they just wrote

Hi Ultravox. Could you send me that sales spreadsheet please?

YABU: you are a killjoy - they are just being nice and you should smalltalk for a bit and ask them how they are too

YANBU: it’s a waste of time and typing - just cut to the chase!

I HATE receiving a 'hi' message. It's perfectly fine to write 'hi X, hope you're well, please could you do XYZ task? Thanks'

Stafanko · 14/03/2025 10:47

I can't vote as both are true! It is a waste of time and annoying - however, they are just being nice so it's not worth the hassle and better to go along with it for the sake of 30 seconds.
Messages like this drive me mad too but I've come to realise im the minority and swallow my irritation 😄

ComtesseDeSpair · 14/03/2025 10:51

There was a thread a few days ago from an OP who found it rude and offensive when colleagues didn’t go through the motions of saying “hi, how are you, how’s your day?” before making a request, so you can’t win.

Woahtherehoney · 14/03/2025 10:51

YANBU! Search no hello on google - its a whole thing.

I have a status message on my teams that says “please don’t just say hello - please include what you need from me in your message”

I don’t mind if people say “hi how’re you? Can you send me XYZ please” but don’t leave me hanging with just a hello! You wouldn’t do it to someone in person or on the phone.

ScarletWitchM · 14/03/2025 10:51

It’s my biggest peeve at the moment - we do a lot of our work via teams and I’m so fed up with the hi, how are you, messages with no follow up so now I don’t reply unless they give more context or I have time to chat

CrazyFTM88 · 14/03/2025 10:52

I always directly reply with "what's up" or, if someone more senior "how can I help". I hate it too. I know there is a request coming, don't waste my time.

ShortColdandGrey · 14/03/2025 10:53

If someone starts a message with 'Hi' and they are a part of my team I usually reply with 'What do you want'. The last one that sent 'Hi' I just replied 'No' 😂He then messaged about 5 minutes later saying he couldn't stop laughing and could I please send him xyz.

loropianalover · 14/03/2025 10:54

My old boss used to just say ‘Loropiana?’ and leave it there until I responded - drove me nuts!!!

its2025 · 14/03/2025 10:55

Oh I'm totally with you @Ultravox It drives me mad... Messages like this:
"Hi"
"How are you today"
"You know that project xyz"
"I wanted to ask you a question"

Gah!!! all on separate messages!!!! each one ping ping ping. Just put your question and a hello all in one message FGS!!!!

sunbum · 14/03/2025 10:55

i just ignore them until they cut to the chase and say what they want

NeverHadHaveHas · 14/03/2025 10:56

This drives me absolutely insane.. I just ignore them completely

TallulahBetty · 14/03/2025 10:56

I HATE receiving a 'hi' message. It's perfectly fine to write 'hi X, hope you're well, please could you do XYZ task? Thanks'

This., It's fine to make small talk, but put it all in the opening message ffs!

Hi Brenda, good weekend? Can you send those figures please?

DONE IN ONE

Couldyounot · 14/03/2025 10:56

"Hi Couldyounot"

Bloggs, Joe is typing...

[minutes pass]

FFS JUST TYPE IT ALL OUT IN ONE GO YOU UTTER SOCIOPATH

sunbum · 14/03/2025 10:58

I also ignore voicenotes on principle. i havent got time to listen to people wittering on to themselves before asking me for something. Write it down so I can review at my convenience, not yours, and i have a searchable record of what you asked for, or fuck off.

potplant · 14/03/2025 10:58

I’m YABU and YANBU, because I find this really annoying but I also do it.

On the one hand, you’re only messaging because you want something, so cut to the chase. On the other hand, it’s kind of rude.

Snorlaxo · 14/03/2025 10:59

I’ve seen someone complain about people doing the opposite and just sending what they want from you.

I think that a hybrid approach of “Hi Ultravox, can you send me the sales spreadsheet please?” is best. The “hope you’re well” is only necessary if you are close enough to discuss how you are you’ve not seen each other for a while.

mintchocolatecoffee · 14/03/2025 10:59

This drives me up the wall. I’m always tempted to send these people a link to https://nohello.net/en/

Or to reply with “What was the rest of your message?”

no hello

please don't say just hello in chat

https://nohello.net/en/

Errors · 14/03/2025 11:01

I ignore ‘hi’ messages and wait for them to get to the point.
Having said that, when I request something from someone I tend to write it all out in one message like

“Hi Nigel, I hope you are well? Would you be able to send me last month’s figures please? Thank you”

Nigel can either just send them back to me with no pleasantries or he can engage if he likes. At least I have given him the option

I also tend to ignore requests for stuff they can find themselves. It’s amazing how many “never mind, I have found it now” messages I get

LisaD1 · 14/03/2025 11:03

I personally am fine with the small talk, it is actually really common where I an and my team are very genuine, they do actually want to know how we all are and about holidays etc. I could live without it but it is part of our culture.

They do all know though that if they literally send “hi” I am not responding until they add something to it. There’s one guy who write hi, people respond and then he says nothing for hours. We all just ignore him now and he knows why.

Sinkintotheswamp · 14/03/2025 11:04

Yanbu.
Although I do sometimes tend to type "hi" and hit return by mistake. Followed by an "oops sorry.." and the actual message.

ChewbaccaAteMyHamster · 14/03/2025 11:18

That drives me insane!!! Years ago when I was online dating you would get guys who would message 'Hi' and then I would message back something like 'Hey, how are you, are you having a good day?' and I would get back 'Yeah'

FFS what's with the one word answers and no chit chat or conversation?? Give me some personality you cretin.

Not sure why some people find it so hard to just write out a complete message instead of all the useless and needless to-ing and fro-ing.

Who the hell has the time, or the patience, for that bullshit? 😂

CautiousLurker01 · 14/03/2025 11:19

I’d have just replied ‘Hi - what can I do for you’ to get straight to the crux of it. Next time you get a ‘hi’, I’d suggest that.

Skandar · 14/03/2025 11:25

Drives me insane too - we get 'Hi' and then nothing from certain people. And if you don't reply, they send nothing else and just try again hours later - I can only assume its intended to check if you're about - but how hard is it to go 'Hi, have you got a minute to talk about x?'

Togglebullets · 14/03/2025 11:26

That's çrazy! Are they very young? That's like some of my young nieces/nephews message me. Drives me potty, just send one message with everything in it!!

LadyDanburysHat · 14/03/2025 11:28

Too many Hi people in my team. Also dislike when my manager says, have you got a minute?. Please tell me what the call is about or I will immediately panic that it's something bad. See also manager putting in a meeting called quick catch up with no context.
