What can I do that isn't on an individual level regarding climate change?

7393827gsjsbdh · 13/03/2025 14:23

I've done all I can on an individual level, I've joined a litter picking group and have a veg patch and made my small garden 'wild'...
But I feel I need to do more.
I have so much passion on the subject, always have even when it was called 'global warming' and ' the ozone layer ' and 'being a hippy' 😅

What else is there to do?
I don't mind spending time and money, I only work 25 hours a week so I have time to put into a project but I don't know what would be best to try and do?

I'm thinking maybe I could try to start a really zero waste business?
I always daydream about winning the lottery and buying loads of land and building a waste free city but I'm not going to win and what's the point in waiting?

I know this is a little bit of a ramble but I just want to be able to look my children and my grandchildren in the eye and assure them that I did all I could.
so does any one have any ideas? what can I do today or plan to do next week or next month that would make a change?
or just a bit of solidarity?

It was also "terrifying" in the 80's with talk of Southern England being uninhabitable by 2000 due to warming.
This was after the "terrifying" 70's where the science was very clear that we were entering a mini ice age and most of Northern England would be uninhabitable by 2000 due to being permanently ice/ snow bound.

But neither of those things were ever the scientific consensus, or anything close to - so why pretend they were?

well there were many scientists publishing stating that those things were happening and it was so mainstream that we were told about the earth entering an ice age at school as were many people of my age.

Maybe you went to a crap school? The idea that the Earth would cool, not warm, was very fringe.

no, it was actually a very respected 500 year old private grammar.
It really wasn't a very fringe theory at all,
Maybe your school was crap for not introducing you to any of the other theories of the day?

I was aware that a small cohort of scientists predicted cooling, rather than warming, but it was never even close to the consensus. Published scientific papers from the time remain available to be reviewed (and have been) and it's plain and obvious that the idea that Earth was entering into a period of cooling temperatures was never mainstream.

THE MYTH OF THE 1970s GLOBAL COOLING SCIENTIFIC CONSENSUS

Climate science as we know it today did not exist in the 1960s and 1970s. The integrated enterprise embodied in the Nobel Prizewinning work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change existed then as separate threads of research pursued by isolate...

It's possible that your school wasn't crap and you're just a bit muddled, of course.

Either way, you're peddling a myth.

you're never going to get consensus among the scientfic community for any theory.
I'm saying the global cooling theory was an accepted, not lunatic theory at all at the time and was so mainstream it was covered in a well respected school.
I am aware that more people supported the global warming theory but that doesn't mean the cooling one wasn't mainstream

love the list of things.
I used to traipse the Internet looking for swaps but so many are just unaffordable!

Some things can work out cheaper in the long run. Bars of soap/shampoo cost more to buy but they last so much longer than the liquid stuff that you make quite a saving over time.

What is with the patronising style of posting in this place?
I've noticed it on many threads where people are spoken to like they're 6 years old.
I'm not muddled thank you.
I remember what we were told and that we were shown various publications that supported the theory.

What myth am I peddling?
That this was a well known theory?
That's not what a myth means

It wasn't remotely mainstream, though.

It was fringe among scientists but hyped in a few sections of the media. This is easily verifiable.

best to just leave it I think.
I've told you it was mainstream enough to be taught about in schools.
You think I'm muddled/ lying/ myth peddling.
Enjoy the rest if your day and I hope you speak to people in real life in a less insulting/ patronising manner

You said:

"This was after the "terrifying" 70's where the science was very clear that we were entering a mini ice age"

Which is a popular myth, hence the journal article I linked (which reviews the scientific literature and media reports of the time) - "The Myth of the 1970s Global Cooling Scientific Consensus".

If you don't to be patronized, make fewer demonstably false statements.

The claim you made is quite literally a myth.

@Mightymoog Climate does vary naturally, but humans are without a doubt changing climate and causing it to warm.

@7393827gsjsbdh I think it's great you care. For climate change, the biggest things we can do is reduce our emissions - so not buying unnecessary things, clothes or electronics; cutting down on meat and buying in-season more locally-grown produce; travelling (particularly flying) less; having a fuel efficient car with low emissions or an electric vehicle (I know these aren't cheap); walking / cycling short distances; taking public transport or lift sharing where practical; using an all renewable tariff for your electricity; making sure your home is as energy efficient as possible eg it is well insulated; maybe consider installing solar panels if your property is suitable for that.

There's also lots of other things you've already mentioned that can help the environment but might not directly help climate change eg litter picking, making your garden wildlife friendly.

It's an opinion in the same way that "smoking cigarettes can have adverse health effects" is an opinion.

E.g., an opinion based on overwhelming evidence that isn't up for debate among serious people.

It was a theory that entered the mainstream enough to be in many schools.
You may not agree with the theory but that doesn't alter the fact it wasn't extreme fringe
I have acknowledged your posts.

Is that ok or are you going to repeat almost the exact same post yet again.

It is fact that climate varies naturally on a variety of timescales. It is also fact that humans are changing climate and causing it to warm. It is not an opinion, it is scientific consensus. Many studies, using different methods, have shown it. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) latest report, which looks at all available scientific evidence and is made up of renowned scientists from around the globe, says "it is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land."

If you will accept that it was never even close to being the scientific consensus (and that you were wrong to say that "the science was clear" the planet was cooling) then we're good.

The review of scientific publications of the time, that predicted either warming or cooling, showed 88% predicting warming and 12% predicting cooling. It identifies media hyperbole about the latter, that had led to an enduring myth.

I suppose it can be argued whether a 12% minority are simply a small minority or if they can be reasonably described as "fringe".
