Captain of Solong is Russian

Ok, so the captain of the Solong who crashed into the Stena immaculate, loaded with USA aviation fuel, is a Russian. I'm not usually into conspiracy theories, but am I being reasonable to suspect foul play?

I think not joining those dots, especially in the currently climate would be hugely unreasonable.

Serpentstooth · 12/03/2025 09:54

No. More likely he was drunk. Voddy.

Sunrisewatcher · 12/03/2025 10:15

BBC Radio 4 also just revealed in this morning's broadcast... that one of the crew members of the Solong died and was buried at sea a few days prior to the collision.

aspidernamedfluffy · 12/03/2025 10:26

Why would a Russian captain try to take out an American vessel when America is so pro-Putin? The conspiracy theory would be more believable if the captain was Ukrainian IMO.

528htz · 12/03/2025 10:39

America might be pro putin, but putin isn't pro American. He's laughing at them whilst they dance round him like desperate prize poodles.

Russia is not pro America, or anyone else.

Most merchant navy captains are Russian.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 12/03/2025 10:55

Given the current political climate, it's very unfortunate that the captain is Russian. Whether it was foul play or accident it's an incident that could be leveraged in all sorts of ways, and trust is so low in TPTB at the moment that many will view it with suspicion, rightly or wrongly.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 12/03/2025 10:57

Captain of Solong is Russian

Or is he??

Not sure I believe much in this propaganda minefield at the moment.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 12/03/2025 11:32

Didn't even swerve. But there should have been 2 men manning the bridge.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/03/2025 11:35

This is beginning to stink like two week old sturgeon.

SoAbsolutelyLonely · 12/03/2025 11:36

Maybe nothing to do with Putin . Might just be a Russian man who personally doesn’t like US involvement in his countries business ? Lone wolf type of thing?

ProfessorPlumInTheLibraryWithAnAxe · 12/03/2025 11:50

The BBC Verify report is interesting if you have time to listen to it.

The Solong is 141 metres long and would need about 3 minutes to make a 90 degree turn travelling at 25 knots, swerving really isn't in her wheelhouse....

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 12/03/2025 11:58

I think it's 90% likely alcohol, poor maintenance, incompetence or a mix of all three, 9% personal agenda, 1% a deliberate act of State sabotage.

Serpentstooth · 12/03/2025 09:54

This was my view.

Either he took a unilateral decision to ram a US vessel because he's a reactionary idiot, or he'd had a skin full of vodka and forget to set a watch.

Either way, as captain of the vessel, unless his radar was hacked, I can't see how he wasn't responsible.

coxesorangepippin · 12/03/2025 12:20

Russia is pro Russia, nothing more

coxesorangepippin · 12/03/2025 12:21

Apparently he came out of nowhere?? The boat, not Putin

GabriellaMontez · 12/03/2025 12:26

Could be foul play.

More likely it was on autopilot and the lookout was asleep/drunk.

I wonder if he set the wrong course - I believe they'd only left Grangemouth an hour before the crash

This. It's a stereotype because it's true. Also, there's not the same culture of "health and safety" over there. Life, and vodka, are cheap.

But it’s about 250 miles and they were travelling at around 18 knots iirc.

Whilst I agree with you I did read this as Slong and think it was going to be a bit rude.

Swerve was a bit of sarcasm lol, I know they can't swerve but it a large vessel to miss when you have 2 people on the bridge
